Russia orders probe of opposition leader Navalny

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russia's chief investigator on Thursday ordered a review of a closed probe against prominent opposition leader Alexei Navalny, raising the pressure on those leading protests against Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Investigative Committee ran a probe into Navalny's alleged embezzlement of a state-owned timber company in the Kirov region from 2011 to May this year, when the case was closed.

Speaking at an annual assembly of investigators from all over the country, Alexander Bastrykin, head of the Investigative Committee, chided the chief investigator for Kirov on Thursday for closing the probe without informing his Moscow bosses.

"You had a criminal case against this man and you quietly closed it," Bastrykin said in televised remarks. "There's no forgiving and no mercy for things like this."

Bastrykin also referred to Navalny's leaked emails, which Navalnly's opponents say could prove his guilt.

Investigators looked into reports that Navalny, while an aide to the Kirov region's governor, Nikita Belykh, in 2007, could have pushed through decisions at the KirovLes timber company that caused it 1 million rubles ($30,800) in damages. Navalny has dismissed the accusations as ridiculous.

Navalny told the Ekho Moskvy radio station on Thursday that Bastrykin's outburst could have been a reaction to his petition to the same Investigative Committee on Tuesday to investigate Bastrykin's reported threats to kill an investigative reporter.

Hackers last week leaked an email exchange between Navalny and Belykh where the two discuss financial matters. Both Navalny and Belykh insist that they were discussing money involved in their personal businesses ties, which date back to their dealings prior to Belykh's appointment as governor.

Report: America?s sheriff Andy Griffith dead

Actor Andy Griffith, who won the hearts of 1960s TV viewers with his role as gentle Sheriff Andy Taylor in ?The Andy Griffith Show,? then returned as a 1980s country lawyer in ?Matlock,? died Tuesday at 86, according to WITN-TV.

The news was?reported to the North Carolina television?station by Bill Friday, former president of the University of North Carolina and a Griffith friend.?The Charlotte Observer later reported that its sources had confirmed Griffith's death.

Actor Ron Howard, who played Griffith's son, Opie, on "The Andy Griffith Show," told Deadline.com that Griffith "has not been well for some time."

"His love of creating, the joy he took in it whether it was drama or comedy or his music, was inspiring to grow up around," Howard told Deadline. "The spirit he created on the set of The Andy Griffith Show was joyful and professional all at once. It was an amazing?environment."

Dare County Sheriff Doug Doughtie had confirmed to WITN earlier that am ambulance was sent to Griffith's home.

Griffith began his entertainment career with comic monologues and moved into movies, debuting in 1957?s ?A Face in the Crowd? with Patricia Neal. But it was as the widower sheriff Andy Taylor on ?The Andy Griffith Show? that he really made his mark. The show, which also starred comedian Don Knotts as bumbling Deputy Barney Fife, ran from 1960-1968. Its setting, in the fictional small-town of Mayberry, became almost as famous as any one episode.

Griffith returned to TV stardom in 1986 as Ben Matlock, a Southern lawyer. That show ran until 1995 and was seized upon by comedians as a punchline for its popularity with older Americans. In one ?Simpsons? episode, a highway is renamed the Matlock Expressway so a town mayor can win the elderly vote.

Griffith was awarded a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005. A statue of Griffith, in character as Andy Taylor, and holding a fishing pole and the hand of Ron Howard's Opie, stands in Raleigh, N.C.

Griffith was born in North Carolina in 1926.?He earned a degree in music from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

The actor was married three times. He?is survived by wife Cindi and his daughter Dixie. Son Andrew Jr., known as Sam, died in 1996.

Following the genomic pathways to stop the spread of cancer

ScienceDaily (July 3, 2012) ? As the Genetics Society of America's Model Organism to Human Biology (MOHB): Cancer Genetics Meeting in Washington, D.C. drew to a close, it was clear that the mantra for drug discovery to treat cancers in the post-genomic era is pathways.

Pathways are ordered series of actions that occur as cells move from one state, through a series of intermediate states, to a final action. Because model organisms -- fruit flies, roundworms, yeast, zebrafish and others -- are related to humans, they share many of the same pathways, but in systems that are much easier to study. Focusing on pathways in model organisms can therefore reveal new drug targets that may be useful in treating human disease.

"By reading evolution's notes, we can discover what really matters in the genome," keynote speaker Eric Lander, Ph.D., founding director of the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT and professor of biology at MIT, told a packed crowd at the MOHB: Cancer Genetics Meeting on June 19.

What matters the most in the genome of a cancer cell may be the seeds of drug resistance, the genetic changes that enable cells to evade our best drugs. Bert Vogelstein, M.D., director of the Ludwig Center at Johns Hopkins University and an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and a keynote speaker on June 17, told participants. He called drug resistance to single agents a "fait accompli," or a done deal as a side effect of the evolution of cancer.

"About 3,000 resistant cells are present in every visible metastasis," said Dr. Vogelstein. "That's why we see resistance with all therapeutics, even when they work. And we can't get around it with single agents. Cancer treatment requires combinations of agents."

Presentations throughout the meeting offered specific examples of events in pathways involved in the progression of cancer in model organisms that shed light on how human cancer may metastasize.

? To identify the genes behind a breast cancer's spread to the lungs, Joan Massagu?, Ph.D., chair of the Cancer Biology & Genetics Program at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and colleagues, placed cells from the lung fluid of patients into mice, deducing a "breast cancer lung metastasis signature" and identifying several mediators of metastasis that are clinically relevant and potential drug targets.

? Denise Montell, Ph.D., from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, traced the signaling pathways that developing egg cells in the Drosophila (fruit fly) ovary use to migrate as using some of the same genes that are expressed as ovarian cancer spreads.

? David Botstein, Ph.D., and his group at Princeton University use yeast to model the evolution of cancer through serial mutations, revealing that only a few destinations for a particular type of cancer are possible. "Breast cancers can't turn into leukemias, There are limited subtypes, not just anything can happen," he explained.

? David Q. Matus, Ph.D., a postdoctoral researcher at Duke University, discussed an in vivo model of cell invasion, a key component of cancer metastasis that occurs during the larval development of the roundworm, Caenorhabditis elegans. He showed that the invasive gonadal anchor cell needs to exit the cell cycle, (be non-dividing), in order to invade. Proliferative anchor cells fail to form "invadopodia" -- invasive feet or protrusions in the basement membrane -- suggesting that cell division and cell invasion are disparate states.

The tumor suppressor "drivers" -- those genes that reduce the probability of a cell turning into a cancer cell -- are often deletions -- part of a chromosome or a sequence of DNA that is missing. But, a drug can't target proteins encoded by such sequences. The solution? Understand and interrogate pathways. "For every mutated tumor suppressor gene that inactivates a component of a pathway, another gene is indirectly activated," Dr. Vogelstein explained. We need model organisms to dissect the pathways that will underlie future combination therapies, he concluded.

Black widow spiders meet their match

Black widow spiders seem to be universally feared. But who's scared of a brown widow? The black widow should be quaking all eight of its boots, a new study suggests. In the United States, there's a new widow in town. The brown widow. And scientists say it may be taking over some native western black widow territory.

That may be good news in one sense: Brown widow spider bites are less toxic than those of black widows, researchers say.

The brown widow spider first showed up in the United States (in Florida) in 1935. It was discovered in California in 2003. They've done well with their expansion efforts, it seems. Scientists searched various habitats in Southern California where they expected to find black widows, from urban areas and farms to undeveloped natural areas.

"The brown widows really burst on to the scene in a very short time, and we found brown widows in many habitats where we expected to find black widows," study researcher Richard Vetter of the University of California, Riverside, said in a statement.

"There may be some competition where brown widows are displacing black widows because there is some habitat overlap. There are also places where only brown widows were able to make homes, but in other habitats the black widows still predominate."

At 72 sites, the researchers found 20 times as many brown widow spiders as black widows. Here's the creepy part: They frequently found them under outdoor tables and chairs, and in tiny spaces in walls, fences and other objects. The good news: Neither spider was found in the living spaces of houses, the scientists said in a statement.

The findings are detailed in the July issue of the Journal of Medical Entomology.
