Taking a Closer Look at the New Dell OptiPlex 780 USFF Computer

If you are looking for a new computer, you might want to consider the Dell OptiPlex 780 USFF. It is made by the reputable company Dell who has made laptops and desktops for many years. One of the smallest form factor computers on the market that is designed for businesses with networks, this OptiPlex line is definitely USFF in design. If you have many computers in your office, and limited space, this type of computer is probably what you need.

Many businesses find the Intel vPro technology featured by Dell OptiPlex 780 computers quite useful. This advanced hardware technology allows remote access to computers, even if they aren?t on. The security protocols installed on these units make the entire system safer, but you can still check up on your PCs and manage them remotely from any place you like. This unit has these facilities on board, installed in the motherboard and hardware.

This type of technology is mainly for businesses but if you do want to discover more, you can do so through Dell. If you have a larger number of computers you need to maintain and look after, then you will probably find vPro technology highly efficient, especially if you are worried about security risks. If you use IT for your computers, the Dell OptiPlex 780 USFF makes their job very easy allowing them to stay on top of the changes that you make. What you want, especially if efficiency is important to you, is to have computers that can be managed and serviced in a network capacity. It is important that every OptiPlex desktop that you have be configured with standardized options, making it simple for your IT people to get their jobs done efficiently. These computers, and their sleek design, make it very easy for them to be serviced when the time comes. The tool-less chassis will enable staff to do any troubleshooting and servicing with a minimum of difficulty. Anyone that owns Dell OptiPlex 780 USFF computers, especially a small business with a network, will benefit from their exceptional design.

The Dell OptiPlex series features a wide range of desktops so, even if the Dell OptiPlex 780 USFF seems perfect for you, you should think about researching the other versions as well. There is a significant selection, starting with the OptiPlex 160 to the OptiPlex XE, which is even more robust and was designed to withstand a wide range of climates and environments. The least expensive unit of the line and the most compact, the OptiPlex 160 is an excellent choice for people with basic computing needs. Advanced security protocols, vPro technology and being networking oriented is what all these units have in common.

Many people like the OptiPlex 780 USFF, as it?s a good mid-range desktop, but it would be worthwhile to look at the entire series before making up your mind.

While there are lots of computers for you to choose from, whether or not the Dell OptiPlex 780 USFF is a good option for you depends on many variables, some of which were covered in this article. This computer is ideal for businesses with limited space that still need to set up a network. For anyone with intensive graphics needs, however, it?s not the best choice.

Made purely with regard to businesses, the particular Dell OptiPlex 780 USFF is an excellent desktop computer. If you run a house business, or even offer an place of work of the really own, using a computer which includes USFF (ultra tiny kind factor) may be perfect for you, if limited space is an issue. There a wide range of motives you might want to think about the Dell OptiPlex 780 USFF, although, while we\?ll discover in this review, it\?s not ideal for everyone.

New video raises doubts about Fla. gunman's story

MIAMI (AP) ? Newly released police video of a handcuffed George Zimmerman may be important for what it doesn't show: No obvious cuts, scrapes, blood or bandages. No clearly broken nose. No plainly visible evidence of a life-and-death struggle with Trayvon Martin.

As the furor over race and self-defense raged on in Florida and around the U.S. on Thursday, Martin's family and supporters seized on the footage to dispute Zimmerman's claim that he shot and killed the unarmed black teenager after the young man attacked him.

While cautioning that the video is grainy and far from conclusive, some legal experts agreed it does raise questions about Zimmerman's story. The video was made about a half-hour after the shooting Feb. 26.

"It could be very significant," said Daniel Lurvey, a former Miami-Dade County homicide prosecutor. "If I were the prosecutor, it would certainly be Exhibit A that he did not suffer any major injury as a result of a confrontation with Trayvon Martin."

Zimmerman attorney Craig Sonner said on NBC's "Today" show that the footage appears to support his client's story in some respects.

"It's a very grainy video. ... However, if you watch, you'll see one of the officers, as he's walking in, looking at something on the back of his head," Sonner said. "Clearly the report shows he was cleaned up before he was taken in the squad car."

Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer in the town of Sanford, told police he shot the 17-year-old Martin after the young man punched him in the nose, knocked him down and repeatedly slammed his head against a sidewalk.

The Sanford Police Department video begins at 7:52 p.m., about 35 minutes after the shooting, as Zimmerman arrives at the station. It shows Zimmerman's head and face as he gets out of a police car.

There is no obvious wound on his head or blood on his clothing, and there are no indications of a broken nose ? which Zimmerman's lawyer has insisted he suffered. He walks briskly, smoothly and unassisted.

"The explanation he is relying on is that there was a physical altercation," said Kendall Coffey, former U.S. attorney in Miami. "The intensity of the physical conflict is critical to his self-defense claim."

Benjamin Crump, an attorney for the Martin family, said the footage directly contradicts Zimmerman's story: "There are no marks on his face. There is no blood on his face. It's not like he's dazed or he has been injured."

Yet Ron Martinelli, founder of a California forensic consulting firm, said that Zimmerman was probably cleaned up when he was treated by paramedics at the scene and that in many cases there is no significant visual evidence of an injury.

"It really depends on how did the head strike the concrete? Did he get hit straight on in the face? Did he get hit with a fist or a backhand?" Martinelli said. "The video proves absolutely nothing."

Investigators have not released any paramedic or hospital records on the gunman. The video, as well as a photo of Zimmerman on the website of a company where he worked, show a slim man, a sharp contrast from the widely used 2005 booking photo from an arrest in Miami Dade County.

The police report said that Zimmerman was found bleeding from the nose and the back of his head, and his back was wet and covered in grass, as if he had been lying on the ground. He was given first aid at the scene. According to his lawyer, he also went to the hospital the next day.

Zimmerman, whose mother is Hispanic and whose father is white, has not been arrested, despite demands from black leaders and others that he be charged with murder or manslaughter. But a special prosecutor appointed by the governor is investigating, along with state and federal authorities.

David O. Markus, a prominent Miami defense attorney, said that an actual fight does not need to take place for someone to claim self-defense under Florida's Stand Your Ground law, which gives wide leeway to use deadly force and eliminates a person's duty to retreat in the face of danger.

The video is yet another forensic challenge for investigators trying to unravel the case. Other key pieces of evidence include:

?The 911 call made by a woman who told a police dispatcher she could hear someone screaming for help, followed by a gunshot. The screaming voice can also be heard on the recording. Zimmerman told investigators it is his voice, but Martin's parents believe it is their son's. Martinelli said that investigators could do voice comparisons but that screaming is difficult to duplicate and match.

?A 911 call made by Zimmerman in which, to some people, he seemed to utter a racial slur while following Martin in his SUV. The raw recording is far from definitive. But recordings can be enhanced, and if Zimmerman did utter a slur, that could be evidence of racial bias and lead to federal hate-crime charges.

? The autopsy report, which has not been released. That could shed light on whether the angle of the bullet wound in Martin's body is consistent with Zimmerman's account of the confrontation.

Five Favorite Films with Lucy Liu

In a busy career across movies, stage and TV, Lucy Liu has played all kinds of roles: fashionistas, Charlie's Angels, animated snakes and -- perhaps most memorably -- sword-wielding, scalp-collecting bosses of deadly assassination squads. She's currently appearing in Detachment and this week's The Trouble with Bliss, an independent New York comedy co-starring Dexter's Michael C. Hall and 21 Jump Street's Brie Larson. With the movie opening in New York, LA and across VOD, Liu called in for a conversation about her role, while also sharing some stories from the Chinese set of The Man with the Iron Fists -- the upcoming martial arts movie directed by and starring the RZA, with Russell Crowe, Gordon Liu and Pam Grier. Read on for more of the chat, but first up -- her five favorite films.

One of my favorite films is Red Sorghum, by Zhang Yimou, who's an incredible director -- just incredibly visual. The way that he shoots a film and takes a time in history and connects it to somebody; he takes a moment in somebody's life and also connects it historically to what happened between the Japanese and the Chinese during the war. I just think it's so elegantly done. It sort of shows not just what's going on in the family itself, but links that personal story -- you get involved in that and then connected to the backdrop of the war, how their family, how their business all kind of connects. It's incredibly heartbreaking and very real. It was very impactful. I saw it when I was in college, and I was destroyed. [Laughs] Destroyed by that movie. There's a quality in his movies that really stands out, that I haven't really seen in a lot of other movies.

Another movie that I really love -- and I'm sure you know it -- is It Happened One Night, which is, I think, one of the best romantic comedies out there. I remember seeing that movie and falling in love with Clark Gable and just thinking how fantastic that backdrop was, on the train. It seemed like a very real relationship, like they really were in love with one another. [Laughs] I didn't seem so pat, you know?

2046
(Wong Kar Wai, 2004; 84% Tomatometer)

I also love 2046 by Wong Kar Wai, a film which I thought was so beautifully shot, with an incredible story. I love that he uses the location as a character. He has a very romantic way, a very sexy way of presenting everything, and the cinematography in that is absolutely stunning. He obviously has a very strong vision for what he wants to do and how he wants to do it. All of his movies, I think they're very intimate: They don't always require huge stages, but he always seems to capture something in a very small area. I like the way he presents things. He creates an atmosphere and you get swept into it right away.

I love Being There, it's one of my favorite movies -- with Peter Sellers, who I thought was brilliant. I love how underplayed but so incredibly funny it was, you know... dry. [Laughs] There's something wonderful about the misconceptions [about the main character] that create the simplicity of all of it. The misconceptions create a simplicity which then creates this aura. I love that movie.

Then I have, well, I have two movies: Godfather one and two. An incredibly absorbing story that unravels and captures a time that really existed in New York. It just draws you in and just keeps you. There are moments in that that you can't believe. You watch it and you go, "Oh, right" and then you hear the dialogue and then you realize that this is an incredibly famous quote. [Laughs] It's all-time, basically. A side one that I love, just 'cause I grew up watching it, and it happened to air around my birthday in December, was The Sound of Music. It reminds me very much of my childhood, that kind of hopeful, contagious optimism that Julie Andrews had -- and also set in the backdrop of war. But that's more of a childhood thing. Then there's Drunken Master, but for different reasons, and different entertainment values, you know? It's hard. There's a list a mile long. In very small font. But asked to narrow it down, I will narrow it down to those movies right now. [Laughs]

Next, Liu talks about her role in The Trouble with Bliss and shares some stories from the set of RZA's forthcoming martial arts epic, The Man with the Iron Fists.

Trayvon Martin PSAs: Chaka Khan, Other Celebrities, Ordinary People Pay Tribute to Slain Teen

A pair of videos - one featuring celebrities, one starring ordinary people - have surfaced online as public service announcements and tributes to Trayvon Martin.

In the first, singer Chaka Khan enlisted the help of celebrity friends Kelly Price, Eric Benét, Eva Pigford, Kenny Latimore, Terry Crews, Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine and Kimberly Elise for a public service announcement for Trayvon Martin:

Donning a black hoodie, Chaka sings “A mama’s cryin’ ’cause another young man has gone and died. He’s not some statistic. He’s an awesome destiny denied.”

In a second video, filmmakers from Newark, N.J., assembled 30 African-American males to lend their voices to speak out on the Trayvon Martin case and the way they believe black men are being perceived in the media and society.

They, too, wear hooded sweatshirts as audio of a 911 dispatcher speaking to George Zimmerman, and Geraldo Rivera's comments, play in the background:

These tributes are moving, however, some have suggested that Martin becoming a national symbol and media obsession has indirectly led to bias against George Zimmerman, who claims self-defense and has not been charged with a crime.

Do you agree?

Mitt Romney Calls For Repeal of Obamacare, Presents ... - Insurance

BOSTON, March 23 ? The presidential campaign of former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., issued the following news release:

?Today Obamacare is two years old, but the American people are not celebrating, and neither is the White House.

We must repeal this law immediately.? ? Mitt Romney

Today in Metairie, Louisiana, Mitt Romney leveled harsh criticism against President Obama?s failed health care reform. ?It was always a liberal pipedream that a 2,700 page, multi-trillion dollar federal takeover could actually address the very serious problems we face with health care,? said Romney. ?Sadly, the law itself is fast becoming the national nightmare that I and other critics have always predicted.? Romney noted that, contrary to President Obama?s claims in promoting the law, costs are already exceeding projections, insurance premiums are expected to rise dramatically, millions of Americans are facing the loss of their health plans, and Medicare beneficiaries are bracing for substantial cuts.

Romney repeated his commitment to repeal Obamacare, and outlined his vision for a health care system guided by state flexibility, market competition, and consumer choice that will provide higher quality care at a lower cost to all Americans. ?Everyone can agree that health care is broken,? said Romney. ?So the last thing we should do is allow Obamacare to freeze the current system in place. Instead, we need to encourage innovation at every level. States should have the flexibility to pursue new policy approaches. Insurers and providers should have the opportunity to compete in a genuine market. Most importantly, patients should have the information and control they need to make choices about what they actually want.?

Romney also announced members of his Health Care Policy Advisory Group: Scott Atlas, Tom Barker, Scott Gottlieb, Paul Howard, and Tevi Troy. This group will help Romney design policies that will strengthen the health care system nationally while giving states the power to innovate and individuals the power to control their own health care decisions. ?I?m honored to have the support of this thoughtful and experienced group of advisors,? said Romney. ?I look forward to working with them to help deliver the health care system that the American people want.?

?I think I speak for all members of the group in saying that we are thrilled to be supporting Governor Romney and working with him on this critical issue,? said Troy. ?He has been a strong, conservative leader on health care reform and I believe he is the one candidate who can reverse the damage done by President Obama and put this nation on a path to market-based health care reform.?

A Health Care System Guided By State Flexibility, Market Competition, And Consumer Choice

As president, Mitt Romney will repeal Obamacare. This effort will begin on Day One, by issuing an Executive Order paving the way for Obamacare waivers to all fifty states. Then, he will pursue reforms at the national level that will create the conditions for a thriving, market-based health care system. These include:
Attend 2 live events with real clients & prospects

Restoring State Leadership And Flexibility

Romney will begin by returning states to their proper place in charge of regulating local insurance markets and caring for the poor, uninsured, and chronically ill. States will have both the incentive and the flexibility to experiment, learn from one another, and craft the approaches best suited to their own citizens.

* Block grant Medicaid and other payments to states

* Limit federal standards and requirements on both private insurance and Medicaid coverage

* Ensure flexibility to help the uninsured, including public-private partnerships, exchanges, and subsidies

* Ensure flexibility to help the chronically ill, including high-risk pools, reinsurance, and risk adjustment

* Offer innovation grants to explore non-litigation alternatives to dispute resolution

Promoting Free Markets And Fair Competition

Competition drives improvements in efficiency and effectiveness, offering consumers higher quality goods and services at lower cost. It can have the same effect in the health care system, if given the chance to work.

* Cap non-economic damages in medical malpractice lawsuits

* Empower individuals and small businesses to form purchasing pools

* Prevent discrimination against individuals with pre-existing conditions who maintain continuous coverage

Robot Submarine To Europa Could Find Aquatic Life On Jupiter's Icy Moon

INDIANAPOLIS ? Allison Melangton's perfect pitch during Super Bowl week has landed her another big job ? leading Indiana Sports Corp.

And maybe another shot at a Super Bowl.

The former host committee president will replace the retiring Susan Williams in September, the organization said Friday after its quarterly board meeting. The 66-year-old Williams is leaving after seven years in charge of an organization that has attracted a wide array of prominent sports events to the city including the Super Bowl and multiple Final Fours.

"The pressure, the pace, all that has been amazing really, but everyone needs to know when their time comes," Williams said during the downtown news conference. "This is the perfect time for a transition and we've been working on it for some time."

The decision should not have been a surprise to the board, which convinced Williams to continue working through February's Super Bowl rather than retire after the 2010 Final Four as she intended. Joe DeGroff, the chairman of the board, said he expects the transition to go smoothly.

Why not? Sports Corp. already knows what it has in Melangton.

Not only did she spend the past four years planning the Super Bowl events, but she also worked extensively with Williams and the organization in the lead up to February's game. The presentation of the biggest event ever hosted by the city received rave reviews nationally. Things went so well local leaders are now contemplating making a bid for a second Super Bowl.

Melangton moved to Indy in 1983, spent the next 12 years working with USA Gymnastics and assisted with events ranging from the Pan American Games to the gymnastics world championships. She's spent the last 14 years on Sports Corp.'s staff and has been a close friend of Williams for the last 18 years.

Her goal is to make sure Sports Corp. remains a national leader.

"Sports Corp. was the first of its kind and now there are 300 sports commissions in the country. All of them want to be like this one, and that was more evident than ever after the Super Bowl," Melangton said. "We've had a lot of sports commissions calling us the last couple of weeks, saying 'We still haven't figured out your secret to putting on great sporting events all the time.'"

Melangton already has big plans despite a calendar that is already pretty full for the next couple of years.

Among the events already booked are NCAA swimming championships each of the next five years, the BMW golf championship this fall, Big Ten football championship game through 2015, a men's basketball regional next spring, Big Ten men's and women's basketball championships in 2014 and 2016, the men's Final Four in 2015 and the women's Final Four in 2016.

But Melangton still hopes to host an Olympic Trials in 2016 and acknowledged the city would seriously consider making another Super Bowl bid.

"We're still tying up a lot of details and concluding a lot of reports and that's going to take a little more time," Melangton said. "My understanding, from the NFL, is the bid process for the next open date, which is 2016, will be next May, May of 2013, so we're going to take our time."

Before joining Sports Corp., Williams was executive director of the Indiana State Office Building Commission, which oversaw construction of the NCAA headquarters and other projects. She also spent 13 years on the Marion County City-County Council and was awarded with the state's most prestigious honor -- the Sagamore of the Wabash Award.

She also was a longtime volunteer with the organization, something she plans to continue despite leaving office.

"I've had a diverse career and had I've had to ask a lot from a lot of people," Williams said. "It is time for me to give back and this is what I plan to do."

Inspiration + Action = Creation: Ouch! you stepped on my feeling toe!

You who are on the road, must have a code that you can live by. CSN had it goin' on with those lyrics. And not only that, but that whole learn from your mistakes thing is a great idea for today. The cards are: Page of Swords, Hierophant, and Six of Cups. So, today is going to be about editing, self-editing. Have you learned from the last bit of chaos that swept through your life? If so, what did you learn? Figure it out. Write it down. Learn from it. If you didn't learn, then that exact same set of crud is going to seep into your life like a flooding basement. It'll come on little cat feet, and it will kick your butt. So, take the time today, be that person who steps back and looks at past errors and then learns from them.

Some of this stuff we were supposed to have learned when we were kids. "If you borrow it, give it back." "If you to it out, put it away again." If you stepped on someone toes, say you're sorry, and if you hurt someone's feelings, do the same. That last one was mine so it's not a quote, but I find it oh so true. So often, if we hurt someone physically, say we step on someone's toe, it's absolutely easy to see we've done it and absolutely automatic to apologize. The apology is accepted and we all move on, acknowledging the accidental ouch. But, when we step on someone's emotional toe (go with me, here) why then everything gets much tougher. For one thing, we don't always know we've done it. Most of the time, when we physically step on someone's toe, we get an indication. We get an, "Ouch!" The same doesn't hold true for feelings. I believe most of us haven't been taught that it's okay to express those feelings as immediately as an "Ouch!" But oh a more honest world we'd live in if we did.

So, I'm giving you a three-part mission today. First, learn from your mistakes. Second, if you step on someone's emotional toe, say you're sorry. Third, and this is the biggie, if someone steps on yours, don't brush it off. Don't bury it. Instead, say, "Ouch! that hurt," and see where it gets you. The people who love you will want to know and will want to honor your feelings, and likely apologize. The people who don't want to acknowledge that they've hurt you, well, then you have a ton more information about them than you did just seconds before. And that brings us right back to learning from our mistakes. Are you in a pattern where your feelings aren't being respected? If so, your mission becomes more and more clear. Today will be the day to stand up for yourself and do something about it. It might hurt some in the moment, but boy will be better for you in the long run.

Kim Kardashian: Attacked by Woman, White Powder

This is so not kool, people.

During an event at the London Hotel in West Hollywood last night, Kim Kardashian was walking the red carpet when a woman ran up and tossed white powder all over the reality star's back and hair.

You can see the before-and-after shots from the fragrance launch below, with Kim being led away, following the assault, in the latter photo:

Kim Kardashian on a Red CarpetKim Kardashian White Powder Pic

The fire department was called in to determine the powder was simply cooking flour and police have detailed the assailant, who really is a moron.

If you aren't a fan of Kim Kardashian, ignore her on Facebook and Twitter. Don't make her sympathetic in the eyes of the public and definitely don't give her a reason to make more headlines.

Seriously, even Jon Hamm would not approve of this idiotic act.

Man pulls a gun on Arkansas news team

By Courtney Garcia, msnbc.com contributor

Reporters often face obstacles in their attempt to catch a good story, however, they rarely are threatened with a gun in the process. Such was the case for this journalist in Arkansas, who managed to stay relatively calm when her research for work took a turn for the worse.

Investigating the death of Wilton Goudeaux, an elderly man allegedly killed by his family, WREG Channel 3 News reporter April Thompson, and her cameraman, Ben Short, drove to the deceased man?s house in Joyner, Ark.,?to look for clues. After a few minutes on site, the team was met, not so fondly, by the ?best friend? of Goudeaux?s son, who stormed up furiously in a pick-up truck as they were exiting the scene.

?Get that camera off me,? said the man, also remarking that everybody was ?lying about Mr. Goudeaux.? When told by Thompson that the crew was merely searching for the truth, the man reached out and slapped the camera away, again telling the team to leave. Thompson informed the man he could not touch the camera, prompting him to stomp back to his vehicle and grab a gun.

?I bet I can do this,? he said, waving around his pistol.

Thompson and Short returned to their car and called the police, who arrived shortly thereafter.

Identified as Brandon Odom, the man was later arrested. As it turned out, Odom?s sister, who was the caretaker of Goudeaux, is also being investigated in connection with?the death of the Mississippi County man. Together with Goudeaux?s son, she is accused of?drugging the victim with sleeping pills, using meth while caring for him, stealing $100,000 from him, and leaving him malnourished. Goudeaux's death has apparently triggered much speculation around the small town, and is a sensitive subject for Odom, who himself now faces charges of aggravated assault for this incident.

While it may be another day on the job, Thompson assured her audience, she will follow up on the attempted crime.

?I didn?t know what to expect,? said the reporter. ?The last thing I thought is that he was going to the car to get a gun, but he was obviously angry. He wanted us to get out of there. We moved back but we are going to continue to follow the story with what happens to him, as well as the other three.?

How massage chairs use air to provide you a massage? | What is ...

A very common technique utilized by a lot of massage therapists is to grip and squeeze significant muscle groups firmly for a few seconds before releasing them. By using this approach they could reduce stress in tight muscles, prompting them to loosen up. Some more advanced massage chair producers identified the benefits of this strategy and saw a chance to integrate these strategies in their products.

There had been a lot of discussion on the way to effectively achieve this correctly and after a great amount of trial ? error they developed a solution and it ended up being the utilization of an air bag system. Following a great deal of research and development it was learned that the outlying regions were way easier to isolate so they targeted on a system to massage your lower legs, feet and arms.

Top end massage chairs like Osaki have developed strategies with multiple air bags that squeeze each arm, leg, and foot. This is realized by using compact air compressors, and switching systems which inflate and deflate a number of compact air bags. Which is all managed through the massage chairs microprocessor.

This kind of control system may be regarded as the chairs brain, this keeps a collection of directions which will allow the chair to perform countless massage methods all with the straightforward press of the button. The micro-processor tells the motors when to come on and how long to remain on in the massage. Some massage chairs enable you to control the strength of the air massage.

The way the intensity is adjusted is by controlling how much the air bag will be inflated. The magnitude is proportionate to the inflation of the air bag, the more the air bag is inflated the bigger the power of the massage. Simply by quickly or slowly climbing or reducing these air bags the chair can replicate a number of massage types.

Well that is all for now next we?re going to talk over some more on how a massage chair works so come on back to find out what?s next.

The author of this article, Bruce Lewis is constantly looking for way to assist in improving peoples lives, so he is always looking to training himself in techniques that help to relieve individuals pain and discomfort. His expertise is related to massage chairs and how they benefit sufferers of many chronic conditions. French Interior Minister Claude Gueant arrives to talk to the media in Toulouse, France Thursday March 22, 2012 near an apartment building where Mohamed Merah a suspect in shooting attacks which killed a rabbi, three Jewish children and three French paratroopers and who claimed links to al-Qaida, was holed up. (AP) ? In a dramatic end to a 32-hour standoff, a masked French SWAT team slipped into an Islamic extremist's apartment Thursday, sparking a firefight that ended with the man being shot in the head as he jumped out the window, weapon in hand.

The suspect, 23-year-old Mohamed Merah, was wanted in the deaths of three French paratroopers, three Jewish schoolchildren and a rabbi ? all killed since March 11 in what Merah reportedly told police was an attempt to "bring France to its knees."

Police had been trying to capture the suspect alive since a predawn raid on his apartment Wednesday in the southwestern city of Toulouse. The killings he was accused of ? and boasted about to police ? have shocked France, ignited fear in moderate Muslims about stoking discrimination and may even affect the country's upcoming presidential election.

The seven slayings, carried out in three motorcycle shooting attacks, are believed to be the first killings inspired by Islamic radical motives in France since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, speaking in Paris, said an investigation was under way to see if Merah, a French citizen of Algerian descent who claimed links to al-Qaida, had any accomplices. His mother and a brother were detained a day ago by police after the mother's computer became a critical link in tracking Merah down. The brother Abdelkader had already been linked to Iraqi Islamist networks.

Prosecutor Francois Molins said Merah burst out of his bathroom when police gingerly entered his apartment Thursday morning, wildly firing his gun about 30 times before jumping out an apartment window.

"(He)launches an assault, charging police through the apartment and firing at them with a Colt .45, continuing to advance, armed and firing, as he jumps from the balcony," Molins said.

Merah fired "until he was hit by a retaliatory shot from the RAID (elite police unit), which felled him with a bullet to the head," Molins said.

The prosecutor said police fired in self-defense after going in cautiously through the front door, using robot cameras to see if there were any boobytraps. Three members of the special squad were wounded Thursday, bringing the total of injured French officers throughout the standoff to five.

Merah, lying on the ground below his second-story apartment, was wearing a flak jacket and black djellabah robe. A Colt 45 ? the type of weapon used in the three attacks ? was at his side along with a sack, Molins said.

Authorities said Merah espoused a radical form of Islam and had been to Afghanistan and the Pakistani militant stronghold of Waziristan, where he claimed to have received training from al-Qaida. He also had a long record of petty crimes in France for which he served time in prison.

Elite police squads had set off sporadic blasts throughout the night and into the morning ? some blew off the apartment's shutters ? to pressure Merah to give up. A new set of detonations, known as flash bangs, resounded at 10:30 a.m. (0930 GMT), portending an end to the standoff. Volleys of gunfire were heard an hour later.

Interior Minister Claude Gueant said police "went in by the door, taking off the door first. They also came in by the windows."

He said police used special video equipment to search the second-floor apartment but could not find him until the instruments surveyed the bathroom.

"The killer came out" firing "with extreme violence," Gueant told reporters. Police "tried to protect themselves and fired back."

Merah had made "extremely explicit films" of all three deadly attacks, video since viewed by police, and claimed to have posted them online, the prosecutor said.

In the film of the March 11 attack that killed a paratrooper, the prosecutor said the gunman is heard saying: "You kill my brothers ? I kill you."

In his film of the second attack, on March 15 that killed two paratroopers and wounded a third in nearby Montauban, Merah cried out "Allahu Akbar!" or "God is great" in Arabic, the prosecutor said.

Authorities spoke little about the video of Merah slaying a rabbi and three children at a Jewish school in Toulouse. A witness to other video of that rampage, from the school, had described him shooting young children in the head.

Merah told negotiators he killed to avenge the deaths of Palestinian children and to protest the French army's involvement in Afghanistan. He was also upset over a French government ban last year on face-covering Islamic veils.

Molins said Merah told investigators where to find the bag with the videos of the slayings, caught by a camera that had been strapped to his chest and given to someone else to keep.

After the standoff ended, Sarkozy announced tough new measures to combat terrorism. He said anyone who regularly visits "websites which support terrorism or call for hate or violence will be punished by the law." He also promised a crackdown on anyone who goes abroad "for the purposes of indoctrination in terrorist ideology."

The French president also appealed to citizens not to confuse violence with France's estimated 5 million Muslims.

"Our Muslim compatriots had nothing to do with the crazy motive of a terrorist," Sarkozy said, noting that Muslim paratroopers were among those killed by the radical.

In Toulouse, the state prosecutor said off-and-on negotiations Wednesday with the suspect ? all recorded by authorities ? broke down again at night. Merah, after initially saying he would surrender, later said he would resist, and that it would be either them or him.

"If it's me, who cares? I'll go to paradise," the prosecutor quoted Merah as saying.

Merah was tracked down by more than 200 special investigators after the Monday attack on a Jewish school in northern Toulouse.

The prosecutor said two major breaks in the case led them to Merah: his mother's computer, which was used by Merah to respond to an online ad by a paratrooper trying to sell his scooter. The soldier became Merah's first victim. Authorities also found a Yamaha motorcycle shop where Merah suspiciously sought information about how to deactivate a GPS tracker.

Molins said Merah had plans to kill another soldier, which prompted the first police raid at around 3 a.m. Wednesday. After that erupted into a firefight, wounding two police, the standoff dragged on and on, with sporadic negotiations.
