New era: Welker joins Broncos

It?s now clear that, as we reported Tuesday, the Buccaneers are the one team that currently wants to trade for cornerback Darrelle Revis.

It remains unclear why the Jets have yet to pull the trigger.

Though some continue to insist that the deal still has too many moving parts, there?s a growing belief that the only remaining issue is whether the Jets will take what the Bucs are offering.? As to the compensation for Revis, the suspicion is that the Bucs and the player?s agents have worked out the terms discreetly.

Sure, it?s tampering.? But it happens more often than anyone admits, league office memos be damned.? And if the Jets want to get this trade accomplished, it?s necessary.

Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports now writes that Buccaneers management is ?fully on board? with the move, news that in all candor should have been presumed to be obvious in light of the fact that the Bucs want to trade for Revis.? Cole also writes that the price ?for a star player? was set by the deal that sent Percy Harvin to the Seahawks.? As we reported on Tuesday, however, there are real differences between the Harvin and Revis situations.

The maximum pick the Bucs will surrender is, currently, a second-round pick in 2013 or a first-round selection in 2014.? More than that, and the Bucs will explore other options, possibly starting with Falcons cornerback Brent Grimes.

But it will be hard for new Jets G.M. John Idzik to accept less, especially with his predecessor declaring that Revis should yield the same package as Harvin.? Taking a job in a town with a hyperactive media can induce paralysis, and this will be Idzik?s first (and possibly biggest) test as to whether he can shut out the noise and make the right move.

If he doesn?t move soon, there will be plenty of noise throughout upcoming year, because the Jets? 2013 will be less about the team and more about the Darrelle Revis farewell tour.

Address America's Abusive Teen Relationships - ForceChange

Goal:?Raise awareness for unhealthy teenage relationships, and lower rates of violence in teen relationships throughout the United States.

Physical and psychological violence is becoming increasingly common in the romantic relationships of American teenagers. Awareness of this problem is low, and many schools and communities are unequipped to address the instances of abuse that cause lifelong damage to young victims. Urge Valerie Jarrett to promote, on a national level, community education on how to deal with unhealthy and violent teen relationships.

Amazingly, about 30 percent of??U.S. adolescents are the victims of a physically or psychologically abusive relationship. ?This alarming statistic was uncovered by a recent?nationwide study?in the Pediatric Journal. Equally alarming is the ?study?s subsequent discovery that teens who experienced dating violence were two to three times more likely to be in violent relationships later in their lives, and significantly more likely to engage in high risk behaviors or have suicidal thoughts.

Although much needed, the resources offered by school counselors are not enough even to begin uncovering and resolving the problems teenagers are dealing with today. The real solution must come from the communities in which teens are living.

As a coach, educator, and father, Ohio teacher Gary Gerhardt knows this well. He recently attended a Seattle conference put on by Idaho?s OVW Step Prevention Institute?an initiative aimed at spreading awareness of teen violence. A proponent of community inclusion on the subject, he is helping to integrate a support network into his own neighborhood. Defining part of the problem, he said,??Kids don?t always know who to turn to. It could be a teacher, but it could just as easily be a coach or other community member.? This is the kind of mindset that could do wonders for teenagers all over America and ensure the mental health of up-and-coming generations.?Not only counselors, but teachers, after-school staff, private team coaches, parents, and police officers need to be educated on teen violence so that unhealthy relationships can be recognized and addressed.

The Step Prevention Institute is just one branch of Idaho?s Center for Healthy Teen Relationships, an excellent example of a community outreach system. Programs like this are a?blueprint that states, cities, and communities struggling with teen violence can build off of.?Sign this petition urging Valerie Jarrett to encourage implementation of community support systems across the nation and tackle the issue of violence in teen relationships.

Dear Valerie Jarrett,

As you know, violence in teen relationships is rising at an alarming rate throughout the United States. With resounding effects that will carry on throughout the lives of America?s youth, the issue of violence in teen relationships must be dealt with immediately and efficiently. Your achievements in addressing this issue have been many and great, but I wish to suggest an additional focus for your efforts.

The most powerful tool for recognizing and resolving instances of teen violence is a well-connected, well educated community. A troubled youth may not turn to a policeman or school counselor?may not turn to a friend or even a parent. In order to catch abusive relationships as they occur, we must educate as many community members as possible on what to look for and how to be a support option for at-risk youth.

Some communities are already involved in this kind of activity, but many are not. Idaho?s Center for Healthy Teen Relationships?and indeed the state?s other domestic violence programs?offer an excellent example, a blueprint that cities and states with no support systems could duplicate and build off of. In the interest of future generations, we must spread this kind of awareness and education. I urge you to bolster your fight against teen violence, and give more attention to the implementation of community support systems for teenage victims of abusive relationships.

All but one major U.S. bank passes Fed's stress test

WASHINGTON - U.S. banks have enough capital to withstand a severe economic downturn, the Federal Reserve said on Thursday, with all but one major bank passing the regulator's annual health check.

All 18 participating lenders except for Ally Financial - government-owned after being rescued during the financial crisis - met the minimum capital hurdle of a 5 percent capital buffer, in the Fed's "stress test."

"The nation's largest bank holding companies ... are collectively in a much stronger capital position than before the financial crisis," the Fed said in a statement.

The 18 banks' aggregate so-called tier 1 common capital gauge would hit a low of 7.4 percent under the hypothetical stress scenario. That was much better than an actual 5.6 percent at the end of 2008, the Fed said.

The stress scenario included a peak unemployment rate of 12.1 percent, a drop in equity prices of more than 50 percent, a decline in housing prices of more than 20 percent and a sharp market shock for the largest trading firms.

"Projected losses at the 18 bank holding companies would total $462 billion during the nine quarters of the hypothetical stress scenario," the Fed said in its release.

Two Wall Street banks, Morgan Stanley at 5.7 percent and Goldman Sachs at 5.8 percent, showed the two lowest outcomes above the 5 percent threshold. They were followed by JPMorgan at 6.3 percent.

At 1.5 percent, Ally Financial was the only bank missing the 5 percent target. Formerly known as GMAC, Ally is 74 percent-owned by the U.S. Treasury after a series of bailouts during the financial crisis.

The Fed's annual stress tests were mandated by the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial reform law, and are partly meant to determine whether banks can start returning money to shareholders in the form of dividends or share buybacks.

Unlike last year, this first batch of results does not look at the impact of any such payouts. The Fed's 2012 rejection of a dividend boost by Citigroup sent its shares tumbling.

To avoid a similar debacle, the Fed is giving banks 48 hours to tweak any capital plans they may have.

Next week, the Fed will publish the second phase of stress test results, this time with the proposed capital action.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Google is cutting an additional 1,200 jobs in its Motorola division as the unprofitable cellphone maker struggles to compete.

Last summer, Google Inc. announced 4,000 Motorola job cuts. The latest reductions are in addition to those and will be in countries including the U.S., China and India.

"These cuts are a continuation of the reductions we announced last summer," Google spokeswoman Niki Fenwick said in an email.

When Mountain View, Calif.-based Google bought Motorola last year for $12.4 billion, it had about 20,000 employees.

The online search leader also expects to pare jobs at the division with a planned $2.35 billion sale of the Motorola set-top business, which has about 7,000 employees. Google had about 53,000 employees as of late September.

Google bought Motorola primarily for its 17,000 patents, bolstering the company in the mobile device arms race with other technology companies. The cellphone business has lost market share to Apple and Samsung, however, and posted operating losses of $1.1 billion since Google completed the Motorola deal in May.

Analysts have been concerned that adding a phone manufacturing business could hurt Google's profitability and potentially alienate the other device makers that use Google's Android mobile operating system. Samsung, HTC and other phone makers run Android. Apple and BlackBerry have their own systems.

The Wall Street Journal reported the Motorola job cuts in Friday's editions.

Google shares rose $3.39 to $835.99 in premarket trading.

Better living through mindfulness

Mar. 7, 2013 ? A new study from the University of Utah shows that individuals who describe themselves as being more mindful have more stable emotions and perceive themselves to have better control over their mood and behavior throughout the day. Higher mindful people also describe less cognitive and physiological activation before bedtime, suggesting that greater emotional stability during the day might even translate into better sleep.

The study results will be presented later this month at the annual meeting of the American Psychosomatic Society.

Prior studies of mindfulness -- paying attention in a particular way, on purpose in the present moment and non-judgmentally -- have typically been conducted with participants trained in mindfulness, for example meditation or other interventions. In contrast, this study examines naturally-occurring traits of mindfulness. Using a novel method for data collection, the participants wore a monitor that measured cardiac functioning and were prompted periodically throughout the day to rate their emotional state and mental functioning. Examining these processes during normal daily living builds on prior mindfulness research conducted in laboratory-controlled settings.

"This study gives us a better understanding of how mindfulness affects stress responses throughout the day," says Holly Rau, a graduate student involved with this research. "People who reported higher levels of mindfulness described better control over their emotions and behaviors during the day. In addition, higher mindfulness was associated with lower activation at bedtime, which could have benefits for sleep quality and future ability to manage stress."

How the study was conducted

A total of 38 subjects, recruited from the community and University of Utah undergraduate psychology courses, participated in the study. They ranged in age from 20 to 45, and one-third were male. On the first day of the study, each participant completed a baseline assessment that included standard questionnaires, resting physiological assessment, and cognitive testing before beginning two days of experience sampling.

In the daily life portion of the study, participants wore a cardiac impedance monitor and responded to questions about their emotional state several times a day for two days. At the end of each day, participants also completed questionnaires about their ability to regulate their emotions and behaviors and were asked to rate their level of cognitive and physical arousal before falling asleep.

Researchers found that greater emotional stability, better self-rated control of emotions and behaviors and lower pre-sleep arousal (a measurement of cognitive and physical symptoms of anxiety) were all significantly associated with higher trait mindfulness. Results suggest that mindfulness may be linked to self-regulation throughout the day, and that this may be an important way that mindfulness contributes to better emotional and physical well-being.

Future research will examine the link between moment-to-moment mindfulness, physiological markers of stress throughout the day and sleep quality. Examination of similar measures of mood, self-regulation and sleep quality in everyday life in the context of mindfulness intervention is another important direction for research.
