Report: MLB Tells Union That A-Rod, 8 Others Will Be Suspended

NEW YORK (AP) ? Major League Baseball has told the union which players it intends to suspend in its drug investigation and which ones will receive lengthier penalties for their roles in the Biogenesis case. That?s what two people familiar with the talks tell The Associated Press.

The sides are trying to reach as many agreements as possible that would avoid grievance hearings, and the talks could push back an announcement until Friday.

Three-time MVP Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees stands to receive the longest suspension. The stiffer penalties for some players are tied to other alleged violations, including not being truthful to MLB investigators.

Three 2013 All-Stars could face bans: Texas outfielder Nelson Cruz, San Diego shortstop Everth Cabrera and Detroit shortstop Jhonny Peralta.

HTC: the One is selling better than last year's hero products, but next quarter may see a loss

Image

HTC's unaudited results for Q2 2013 showed a sign of hope, but in today's call for the Q3 guidance, the Taiwanese company expects next quarter's revenue to lower to the range of NT$50 billion to NT$60 billion, with a gross profit margin between 18 percent to 21 percent, and operating margin of 0 percent to -8 percent. These figures see a notable drop from this quarter's NT$70.7 billion revenue, 23.2 percent gross margin and 1.5 percent operating margin.

CEO Peter Chou blames this decline on the higher cost structure (bill of materials and operating costs) and the clearance of aged inventory in the channel, but he hopes that Q3 will be the bottom in terms of HTC's profitability. CFO Chialin Chang added that his team has a few actions in place to help restore the company to profitability very soon.

With low-cost Apple iPhone 5C in the works, Apple iPhone 4 still sells well globally

A picture showing a number of plastic packaging containers with the name iPhone 5C printed on the side has everyone thinking that they have found the actual name of the low-cost version of the iPhone. For some time now, the device was dubbed the Apple iPhone Lite. Whatever the model is called, it is expected to be sent into emerging markets as an attempt to pry business away from entry-level handsets like the Nokia Lumia 520. But it is not like Apple doesn't have a model now that competes in that niche. The Apple iPhone 4, first launched in 2010, is currently considered the entry-level model of Apple's smartphone line and according to the Wall Street Journal, is still selling quite well.

According to analysts, the Apple iPhone 4 played a huge part in the larger than expected 31.2 million iPhones that were sold during Apple's fiscal third quarter. Wall Street had been looking for Apple to report sales of 26.5 million units. Apple did acknowledge that the Apple iPhone 5 was its best seller, which you would expect. But the Cupertino based tech titan did agree with Wall Street that iPhone 4 sales played a big role in the reported sales figures. Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a conference call following Apple's earnings announcement last week, that the company wants the iPhone 4 to act like a magnet to attract first time smartphone users. "We want to attract as many of these buyers as we can," said the executive.

Apple has started to push out the Apple iPhone 4 to countries like India. Between April and June, Apple shipped out 205,000 units of its iconic smartphone to the country which was up nearly 300% from last year and 41% sequentially. According to Cook, "India was up over 400%." Apple also started a promotion in India that allows users of another smartphone to trade it in to Apple and get as much as a 7000 Rupee ($117 USD) discount on the purchase of an Apple iPhone 4.

In the U.S., the Apple iPhone 4 is free with a signed two-year contract. But the new Apple iPhone 5C, if indeed that is what the low-priced phone will be called, should replace that model with the Apple iPhone 5 becoming the new mid-range offering. The Apple iPhone 5S or Apple iPhone 6 will be the new premium smartphone produced by the manufacturer.

Egyptian security forces shoot dead dozens of pro-Mursi supporters

By Tom Perry and Noah Browning

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian security forces shot dead at least 70 supporters of ousted President Mohammed Mursi on Saturday, his Muslim Brotherhood said, days after the army chief called for a popular mandate to tackle "violence and terrorism".

Brotherhood spokesman Gehad El-Haddad said the shooting started shortly before pre-dawn morning prayers on the fringes of a round-the-clock sit-in being staged by backers of Mursi, who was toppled by the army more than three weeks ago.

"They are not shooting to wound, they are shooting to kill," Haddad said. The death toll might be much higher, he said.

Activists rushed blood-spattered casualties into a makeshift hospital, some were carried in on planks or blankets. One ashen teenager was laid out on the floor, a bullet hole in his head.

Al Jazeera's Egypt television station reported that 120 had been killed and some 4,500 injured in the early morning violence. A Reuters reporter at the scene counted 36 bodies at an improvised morgue.

There was no immediate comment from state authorities on what had happened. If the death toll is confirmed it would be the deadliest incident since Mursi was deposed, who is under investigation for a raft of crimes, including murder.

Weeks of violence have followed his ousting, leaving more than 200 dead and laying bare divisions that have polarised the Arab world's most populous state.

MASS RALLIES, "LIVE ROUNDS"

Hundreds of thousands of Egyptians came out onto the streets in answer to General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi's call on Wednesday for mass protests on Friday. Muslim Brotherhood supporters protested in similar numbers to demand Mursi's reinstatement. He is being detained at an undisclosed location.

The Brotherhood is a highly organised movement with grassroots support throughout Egypt, making it hard to silence even if the army decides to mount a more major crackdown.

Reporters at Rabaa al-Adawia, a northeastern Cairo suburb, said there was still firing hours after the violence started. Dr. Ibtisam Zein, overseeing the Brotherhood morgue, said most of the dead were hit in the head, some between the eyes.

A senior Brotherhood politician, Saad el-Hosseini, said he thought security forces were looking to clear the Rabaa sit-in.

"I have been trying to make the youth withdraw for five hours. I can't. They are saying have paid with their blood and they do not want to retreat," he told Reuters.

Haddad said the Brotherhood was committed to pursuing peaceful protests, despite Saturday's deaths - the second mass shooting of its supporters this month by security forces, who killed 53 people on July 8.

Brotherhood activists at Rabaa said they would not be cowed and warned of worse bloodshed if the security forces did not back down. "We will stay here until we die, one by one," said Ahmed Ali, 24, helping treat casualties at the field hospital.

"We have the examples of Algeria and Syria in our minds. We don't want it to become a civil war. If we take up arms it might become one. This is a religious belief."

Haddad said police had started firing repeated rounds of teargas after 3:00 a.m. (0100 GMT) at protesters who had spilled out of the main area of the Rabaa sit-in and were on a main thoroughfare close to 6th October Bridge.

"Through the smog of the gas, the bullets started flying," he said. In addition to "special police forces in black uniforms" firing live rounds, he said that snipers shot from the roofs of a university, other nearby buildings, and a bridge.

State news agency MENA quoted an unnamed security source as saying that only teargas was used to disperse protesters. He said no firearms were used.

Egypt's army-installed interior minister, Mohamed Ibrahim, said on Friday that the month-old Cairo vigils by Mursi supporters would be "brought to an end soon and in a legal manner", state-run al Ahram news website reported.

TRAPPED IN MOSQUE

There is deepening alarm in the West over the army's move against Mursi. The country of 84 million people forms a bridge between the Middle East and North Africa and receives $1.5 billion a year in mainly military aid from Washington.

The United States has delayed delivery of four F-16 fighters because of the turmoil, however, officials have indicated they do not intend to cut off aid to a country seen as a vital ally and which has a peace deal with neighbouring Israel.

The worst of Friday's violence was reported in Egypt's second city, Alexandria, and the Brotherhood said some of its supporters were still trapped in a city mosque by "thugs".

The Brotherhood's political arm, the Freedom and Justice Party, called for more protests in the Mediterranean port.

There was little mention of the violence on Egypt's two state television channels, which broadcast weather reports and a talk show on Saturday morning. All three state newspapers headlined their morning editions with Friday's rallies, saying Egyptians had given Sisi the support he had asked for.

"The people give the army and the police a mandate to confront terrorism," said a strap headline on the bottom of a broadcast on the state's Nile TV.

However not all Egyptians appeared ready to endorse an army crackdown, with growing concern among some activists that the confrontation between the military and Islamists could push the country into an abyss. Open house to showcase energy efficiency opportunities

The app on Frank Schaffer?s iPhone offers a series of bar graphs and percentages, breaking down the current and past energy usage statistics from all over his house.

?Every single circuit in the house has a monitoring system to it,? Schaffer said. ?I can monitor and calculate all of our costs right here for the past day, or past week. We have three kids. If they were to leave the fridge door open, the parameters can be set so that it sends us a text alert so we know something?s going on.?

In terms of energy efficiency, the future is here and it?s at 2215 W. 27th St. The 2,200-square-foot residence ? billed as Joplin?s first reproducible green home ? was opened for private tours on Friday, and will be showcased during an open house and block party from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.

Schaffer, president of F.E. Schaffer Construction, built the home utilizing the most up-to-date efficiency technology. From the AC unit and tankless water system to the hydronic furnace and plumbing system, everything has been designed to lower utility costs by making a much smaller energy footprint.

The former house on the property belonged to Schaffer?s mother, and it was destroyed in the 2011 tornado.

?We lived at 27th and Pearl and we lost our house, too,? he said. ?When she moved to Springfield, we bought the lot, but we weren?t sure what we were going to do with it. We were so busy that first year and a half after the tornado helping out, rebuilding other homes and running a business. But there was a lot of time to think about what we wanted to do.?

During that time, Schaffer said he became infatuated with the concept of energy efficiency and what could be done to bring electric costs down.

Partnering with Missouri Gas Energy and a number of other organizations, he built a home that captures the triple crown when it comes to efficiency. It has been certified as an Energy Star partner through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency program, received LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certification, and a nod from the National Association of Home Builders? Green program.

One of the key components to the home?s success is the thermal enclosure system.

?If it weren?t raining, you could walk around the house and notice that there are no foundation vents,? Schaffer said. ?From the outside in, everything gets sealed.?

Then, there?s the two and a half ton HVAC system, and the hydronic furnace that taps into the tankless water heaters to heat the home.

While outfitting a home with top-of-the line technology does require a significant up-front investment, it?s one that eventually will pay for itself. The proof, Schaffer said, is in the bills.

?Last month, we were still constructing the house and we were in and out, in and out,? said Schaffer. ?The AC was running pretty much non-stop at 65 degrees to pull the humidity out of the house. Our bill was just $51.90.?

All of this is music to Catherine Hart?s ears.

Hart, the general manager of GreenTown Joplin, has been in Joplin since August 2011 to help educate city officials, private individuals and business owners about energy efficient and sustainable construction and think long-term when it comes to building.

?I am thrilled,? she said, during a private tour of the home on Friday. ?I know how much research, thought and intention went into this. To see it open, I?m so happy for (Schaffer) and the community.

?I hope that it can help demystify green building for people. This is just one of the many types of green homes that Joplin has, but it shows that a normal-looking house can be energy efficient. This is a home for the future. It incorporates a lot of the bells and whistles we?re going to see in homes down the road.?

Bob Painter, the manager of energy efficiency programs for MGE, said Schaffer?s home serves as the perfect showcase for what is possible.

He said that interest in energy efficiency was slow to evolve after the tornado, even though the utility was offering rebates as an incentive to those willing to rebuild with it in mind. After talking to other builders, he was connected with Schaffer and they decided to design the home around the tankless water system.

MGE is using Schaffer?s home as a case study, showcasing its energy-saving features in detail at www.energyefficiencyfortomorrow.com.

?We want to use the home as a teaching tool for how to build effectively,? Painter said. ?A lot of time, when you hear ?green home? you think it has to have solar. But this house doesn?t need solar because the envelope is so tight.

?I?m glad it?s here and where it is (in the tornado zone). It?s not a mega-home. It has plenty of space, but it?s on a smaller footprint. It?s a little on the upscale, but people can build a house like this affordably.?

Millions rally in Egypt, responding to army call; ousted President Mohammed Morsi formally placed under investigation

By SARAH EL DEEB
and TONY G. GABRIEL

CAIRO ? Called out by the army, the largest crowds in 2? years of upheaval filled Egypt's streets Friday, while ousted President Mohammed Morsi was formally placed under investigation on a host of allegations including murder and conspiracy with the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Morsi's supporters also showed no signs of backing down, though they turned out in vastly smaller numbers. The demonstrations in Cairo remained mostly peaceful into the night, but in the city of Alexandria seven people were killed and over 100 were injured, officials said.

Late Friday night in Cairo, police fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of Morsi supporters ? a possible sign of a new intolerance for marches that block city streets.

The announcement by prosecutors of the investigation against Morsi, which is likely to pave the way to a formal indictment and eventually a trial, was the first word on his legal status since he was deposed by the military July 3. Since then, the Islamist leader has been held incommunicado in a secret location.

Both sides tried to show how much public support they enjoy. But the millions who turned out for the pro-army demonstrations overwhelmed the streets in multiple cities in Egypt, including some that rarely seen any rallies since the 2011 uprising.

Throngs of people turned out in Cairo's Tahrir Square and in other cities, answering a call by army chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, who urged them to give him a mandate to stop "potential terrorism" by supporters of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood.

Portraits of the smiling el-Sissi in sunglasses dominated the crowd in Tahrir and one near the presidential palace across town. Posters with his picture were emblazoned with the words "the love of the people," and demonstrators wore small photos of him around their necks or carried a picture of his face on an Egyptian one-pound note.

Security was heavy after el-Sissi vowed to protect the rallies from attacks by rivals. Tanks guarded one entrance to Tahrir and police were stationed at other parts.

"The army is here to protect the people. They don't lie," said Ezzat Fahmi, a 38-year-old in the crowd. He said el-Sissi called the rallies "so the entire world can see that the Egyptian people don't want the Brotherhood anymore."

El-Sissi's plea came at a time when the political standoff with Morsi's supporters showed no sign of resolution. It raised speculation that he may be planning a crackdown on the toppled president's allies, who have held a sit-in outside the Rabaa al-Adawiyah Mosque in Cairo and near daily rallies elsewhere in the capital for three weeks.

The rallies have often turned violent, with more than 180 people killed this month. The Morsi supporters and opponents blame each other for the bloodshed, and people in both camps have been seen carrying weapons.

The unrest, as well as claims that Islamist groups are stockpiling weapons and escalating attacks against troops in the Sinai, were used by the country's new military-backed rulers as a basis for demanding popular support.

The interim leader, Adly Mansour, told the private TV station al-Hayat that his government seeks to include everyone, but it will not accept lawlessness, blocked roads and attacks on state institutions. He urged the pro-Morsi protesters to go home, promising they won't be pursued or arrested.

"I can't negotiate with whoever has committed a crime. But those who were duped or those who want to belong to Egyptian society, we welcome them," he said. But he added: "The state must interfere (against lawlessness) firmly."

Not long after the speech, police moved in quickly to break up a crowd of Morsi supporters marching on a main overpass in Cairo near the pro-Morsi sit-in, firing tear gas. Clashes with security forces ensued as protesters tried to extend their sit-in beyond the mosque into a main boulevard. Mahmoud Zaqzouq, a Brotherhood official, said a number of protesters had minor wounds.

Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim told a private TV station that the sit-in at the Rabaa mosque will be removed by legal means. He did not elaborate but said residents of the area have filed police reports against the encampment.

Police spokesman Hani Abdel-Latif told The Associated Press that 53 pro-Morsi supporters were arrested around Egypt on Friday in possession of weapons, ranging from knives to homemade guns.

El-Sissi deposed Morsi after four days of huge protests by millions of Egyptians demanding the removal of the country's first freely elected president following months of disagreements between him and the largely secular opposition.

The accusations against Morsi are connected to a prison break during the 2011 uprising against autocrat Hosni Mubarak. Gunmen attacked the Wadi el-Natroun prison northwest of Cairo, freeing inmates, including Morsi and about 30 other figures from the Muslim Brotherhood. The prosecutors allege Morsi and the Brotherhood worked with Hamas to carry out the break, in which 14 guards were killed.

Egypt's MENA news agency said Morsi was being investigated over allegations of collaborating with Hamas "to carry out anti-state acts, attacking police stations and army officers and storming prisons, setting fire to one prison and enabling inmates to flee, including himself, as well as premeditated killing of officers, soldiers and prisoners."

In recent months, a court in the Suez Canal city of Ismailia has heard testimony from prison officials and intelligence officers indicating Morsi and his Brotherhood colleagues were freed when gunmen led by Hamas operatives stormed the prison.

Morsi supporters called the investigation politically motivated. Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Ahmed Aref said the move showed "the complete bankruptcy of the leaders of the bloody coup."

Brotherhood officials have said they escaped when local residents broke into the prison to free their relatives and that they had no knowledge of it ahead of time.

Hamas has consistently denied any involvement in the jailbreak. A spokesman for the militant group, Sami Abu Zuhri, condemned Morsi's detention order as "an attempt to drag Hamas into the Egyptian conflict."

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki expressed deep concern about reports of Morsi's detention.

"I can't speak to the specific charges. But we do believe that it is important that there be a process to work toward his release," she said. "Clearly, this process should respect the personal security of him and take into account the volatile political situation in Egypt and that's where our focus is. We have conveyed publicly and privately that his personal security and treatment is of utmost importance."

MENA said Morsi has now been formally detained for 15 days pending the completion of the investigation. It did not say whether he would now be moved to a facility where he could receive family visits.

The head of the prison authority, Maj. Gen. Mostafa Baz, said he has not yet received orders for Morsi's transfer to any of his facilities. The news agency indicated that Morsi has already been interrogated.

Egyptian institutions lined up behind el-Sissi's call for Friday's pro-military rallies, reflecting the extent of antagonism against the Brotherhood's hold on power in the past year.

State TV and most of the private broadcasters showed the pro-army rallies in various cities around Egypt, including aerial footage provided by military helicopters. Nationalist songs and parts of el-Sissi's speech in which he called for support were played throughout the day.

On Friday evening, TV networks stopped running soap operas that are wildly popular during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. In a further show of support, church bells rang out during evening prayers when hundreds of thousands of protesters broke their Ramadan fasts. Interim Prime Minister Hazem el-Belbawi participated in the rally held outside the presidential palace.

A giant banner stretched across an entrance to Tahrir Square, the cradle of the 2011 uprising. It read: "The people, the source of all power, mandate the army and police to purge terrorism."

Three tanks guarded another street leading into the square, and helicopters swooped overhead.

"We have no parliament. Today is a quick referendum to support el-Sissi against the Brotherhood, whose members are terrorists," said Mohammed el-Shaer, who stood in Tahrir holding a portrait of the general in a golden frame. El-Shaer held the hand of his 10-year-old daughter, who was dressed in a military fatigues.

He called the rally a "popular referendum" on el-Sissi.

In eastern Cairo, tens of thousands of Morsi supporters at the Rabaa mosque sit-in chanted against el-Sissi and vowed to continue their push for the president's reinstatement. Others marched through some neighborhoods of Cairo.

Their rallies were mostly covered on TV by Al-Jazeera Mubasher Misr, and pro-Morsi activists emailed journalists videos and links to a live feed.

"When I first heard el-Sissi's call I was anxious," said 39-year-old Sayed el-Rawi, protesting outside the mosque. "But today, we saw that his speech encouraged more people to go down in the streets. ... They won't be able to break up the sit in."

The rival demonstrations are only deepening the country's divisions since Morsi's fall.

Clashes and fistfights broke out between both camps in Alexandria, with seven people killed and over 100 injured, according to health official Ibrahim el-Roubi. Some pro-Morsi supporters took cover inside a major mosque, leading to a standoff with opponents who besieged the place, locking them inside for hours.

Skirmishes also broke out in the Mediterranean coastal cities of Damietta and Mahalla, in the southern city of Luxor, and a Cairo neighborhood that left 64 injured, Health Ministry spokesman Khaled el-Khateeb and local security officials said.

It remains unclear what steps the military is planning after Friday's show of strength ? whether it would try to break up sit-ins by Morsi supporters or attempt to arrest more than a dozen Brotherhood figures who have warrants against them.

On the front page of the state-owned Al-Akhbar newspaper, the word "wanted" in English was plastered across photos of a number of Brotherhood leaders and allies who are facing warrants. Many of them are believed to be taking refuge at the Rabaa al-Adawiyah sit-in.

The prosecutors' announcement on Morsi also could signal a greater move to go after the Brotherhood in courts. Besides Morsi, five other senior figures from the group have been detained.

Hassan Mohammed, a 30-year old teacher who came from southern Egypt to join the pro-Morsi rally, remained steadfast.

"Even if we are going to die, me and my family, we won't leave this place before our president comes back. Even if it takes seven years. We are ready to be martyrs in the name of religion and the nation," he said.

Associated Press writers Hamza Hendawi in Cairo and Mohammed Daraghmeh in Gaza City, Gaza Strip contributed to this report.

Dinosaur-Killing Comet Didn't Wipe Out Freshwater Species

The cosmic impact that ended the age of dinosaurs killed many living creatures on land and in the sea, but scientists have found, puzzlingly, that life in freshwater largely escaped this fate.

Now new research suggests freshwater life survived extinction because they were better adapted to withstand rapid changes in their surroundings, which helped them outlast the crises in the wake of the catastrophe.

The mass extinction event the scientists studied (also the most recent and most familiar) is known as the K-T event or, more recently, the K-Pg event. The disaster, which killed off at least 75 percent of all species on Earth, including all dinosaurs except for birds, was apparently triggered by a cosmic impact that occurred in what is now Mexico about 65 million years ago. [Wipe Out: History's Most Mysterious Extinctions]

Past research suggested that while marine life was devastated by this mass extinction, freshwater organisms underwent relatively low extinction rates. Now investigators suggest the secret of their survival may have been all the variability experienced by freshwater life.

Gimme shelter

Water would have helped shelter life in rivers and lakes, as well as the seas and oceans, from the initial blast of heat from the cosmic impact. However, the giant extraterrestrial collision set fire to Earth's surface, darkening the sky with dust and ash that cooled the planet. The resulting "impact winter" and its lack of sunlight would have crippled both freshwater and marine food chains by killing off microscopic photosynthetic organisms known as phytoplankton that are at the base of the marine and freshwater food chains.

Intriguingly, while marine communities were devastated by the mass extinction, losing 50 percent of their species, geophysicist Douglas Robertson at the University of Colorado at Boulder and his colleagues looked at a database of western North America fossils and discovered freshwater ones there survived relatively unscathed, losing only about 10 percent of their species.

The researchers note that freshwater organisms, unlike marine life, are used to annual freezes that ice over inland waters, severely limiting their oxygen supplies. As such, freshwater communities might have better endured the low oxygen levels in the wake of the death of photosynthetic life following an impact winter. (Photosynthetic life generates virtually all the oxygen in the atmosphere, and needs light to live, and the impact winter would have significantly reduced the amount of sunlight reaching Earth.)

Impact winter

Inland waters could also benefit from influxes of nutrients from water seeping in from nearby soils laden with organic matter. Moreover, such groundwater could also be warm, pumping a welcome amount of heat into impact-winter-cooled freshwater. In contrast, while marine coasts might also experience some benefit from warm groundwater, the vast majority of the ocean would not.

In addition, many freshwater organisms can go dormant, including eggs or adults buried in the mud. This would have enabled them to await the return of friendlier conditions, the researchers said.

All these adaptations may have helped freshwater life hold on for the six months to two years it would have taken until the sky cleared from the impact winter. Although the impact event likely killed off many freshwater organisms as well, "for a species to survive, you need only a small number of surviving individuals, an absolute minimum of two individuals at the extreme limit," Robertson told LiveScience. "Look at what a couple of rabbits were able to do in Australia in a few decades." Rabbits, first brought to Australia as food in the 18th century, swarmed uncontrollably across the continent, once teeming in the billions.

Qualcomm is big winner as new Google Nexus 7 and Motorola X8 break cover

Make no mistake. Qualcomm is still vying with Intel when it comes to who has the biggest market capitalization. The two US-based semiconductor companies have been swapping places over the last 12 months as their market shares fluctuate and although Intel currently has the upper hand, it is likely that Qualcomm stock will surge when Wall Street opens later today.

Shares of the company are already up by four per cent in pre-market transactions after the company?s quarterly revenue beat analysts? expectations. It followed some excellent news from one of its closest partners, Google, after the latter announced the new Nexus 7 tablet yesterday which uses a Qualcomm SoC and it emerged that Motorola Mobility, a Google subsidiary, licensed IP for a new chip called the X8.

While the former means secures a massive win for Qualcomm in the short term (with millions of the new Nexus 7 tablets likely to be sold with a Snapdragon chip onboard), it is the fact that Qualcomm is quietly positioning itself as a purveyor of IP which is more exciting and lucrative long term, elevating itself above the rest of the competition.

It is a little known fact but Qualcomm has nearly 300 licensees of all sizes and including a number of rivals (AMD, Mediatek, Samsung, Intel) as well as an impressive amount of blue chip firms ranging from Toshiba to Panasonic.

What is also rapidly becoming bloody obvious is that the world?s biggest fabless semiconductor company is in fact a solution provider rather, one that is able to blend seamlessly an array of technologies that none of its rivals can match: wireless charging, display, OS, IoE, LBS, wireless, graphics, CPU, sensors.

The tale of Mexico's largest dinosaur tail

(Image: PA/AP/INAH-Mauricio Marat)

No, this isn't a prop from a remake of Jurassic Park ? it is the elaborate, incredibly well-preserved tail of a dinosaur uncovered in northern Mexico ? the first articulated fossil tail to be found there.

Palaeontologists from Mexico's National Anthropology and History Institute, who announced their find this week, believe it belonged to a hadrosaurMovie Camera, aka a duck-billed dinosaur.

Despite spending 72 million years in the ground, the tail's 50 vertebrae are still connected. At nearly 5 metres long, the tail is slightly less than half the length of its original owner.

For the past three weeks, researchers have been delicately brushing away the sand and gravel that covers the tail so as not to damage it. The tail is destined to be shifted in parts to a more appropriate laboratory setting, where it will be cleaned and studied further before being put together once again.

"The main significance of this discovery is the location," says Paul Barrett of the Natural History Museum in London. "Relatively little is known about Mexican dinosaurs. This is the most spectacular of a series of recent finds that are helping to fill in a relatively empty area on the dinosaur map."

It's not the first time a hadrosaur has taken centre stage after turning up surprisingly intact. In 2002, a hadrosaur "mummy", complete with stomach contents, was found. The first dinosaur "blood" sample was extracted from the pristine leg bone of a hadrosaur in 2009.

iPhone 5 Only Makes up Half of Apple Smartphone Sales

apple iphone sales

The iPhone 5 may be Apple?s biggest and best phone yet, but the 4-inch handset only makes up about half of the company?s total iPhone sales. According to a new study released by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, just 52 percent of all Apple smartphones sold in June 2013 were the iPhone 5. Meanwhile, the iPhone 4S made up 30 percent of all sales, while the 4 ate up the remaining 18 percent.

?iPhone 5 appears to have settled in at about half of all iPhone sales, nine months after its initial launch,? CIRP told?AppleInsider, adding that the handset falls short when compared to the 4S. While the iPhone 5 peaked at 70 percent, the 4S hit 90 percent in the period immediately following its launch. Almost a year later, the 4S still took up about 75 percent of iPhone sales, while the 5 has already dipped down to 52 percent just nine months after its release.

CIRP?s latest report appears to confirm gloomy forecasts coming from industry analysts who claim the high-end smartphone boom is tapering off while emerging markets are eating up mid-to-low-range devices faster than ever. Apple appears poised to capitalize on these market shifts with the rumored low-cost iPhone, which we expect to launch later this fall around the same time the company announces the high-end iPhone 5S.

Anthony Weiner admits 'wrong' behavior continued even after resignation from Congress

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

?

Donald Traill / AP

Anthony Weiner and wife Huma Abedin attend the Jamaica Jerk Festival at Roy Wilkins Park in Queens on July 21.

New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner, who resigned from Congress in 2011 after a sexting scandal, admitted Tuesday that his Internet shenanigans didn?t stop when he stepped down in disgrace.

Hours after a gossip website published raunchy texts and explicit photos it said were from 2012, Weiner held an extraordinary press conference ? accompanied by his wife Huma Abedin, an aide to Hillary Clinton ? to apologize and ask voters for a second chance.

"Some of these things happened before my resignation. Some of them happened after," Weiner said without providing any specifics.

And in her first public remarks on the scandal, a clearly nervous Abedin said it took ?a lot of work and a whole lot of therapy? to put her marriage back together.

"It was not an easy choice in any way but I made the decision that it was worth staying in this marriage,? she said. ?I didn?t know how it would work out but I did know that I wanted to give it a try.

"I love him. I have forgiven him. I believe in him,? she added. ?And, as we have said from the beginning, we are moving forward.?

Weiner called the press conference after a gossip website called The Dirty published an interview with an anonymous woman who claimed she had an online relationship with him between July and November 2012 ? more than a year after his resignation.

BigGovernment.com via AP

This undated photo taken from the website BigGovernment.com purports to show former Rep. Anthony Weiner shirtless.

"I said that other texts and photos were likely to come out, and today they have," said Weiner, who has been leading some polls for the Democratic nomination for mayor and balked at calls from opponents to drop out of the race.

"While some things that have been posted today are true and some are not, there is no question that what I did was wrong. This behavior is behind me," he said, calling it ?problematic to say the least and destructive to say the most."

Weiner had even told NBC 4 New York in April, as he was weighing a mayoral bid, that there could be more revelations coming.

"Some things may come out that are true," he said at the time. "Some things are not.?... Basically, New Yorkers know the story. I did it. I did it with multiple people. These things were wrong and inappropriate, and I never should have been dishonest about it. They played out in the most public and embarrassing way possible. And that?s it."

On Monday, the Dirty claimed that Weiner ? who allegedly used the alias Carlos Danger ? met the unnamed 22-year-old woman on the social-networking site Formspring in July 2012, sent her lewd photos and had phone sex with her before the relationship "fizzled."

He promised her a job and a condo, said the site, which posted pictures of body parts and graphic messages about sex acts.

"Even post scandal, I thought he was misunderstood. Until I got to know him," the woman was quoted as saying. "I thought I loved him. Pretty pathetic."

Weiner was a six-term congressman representing the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens and Abedin was pregnant when a photo he sent on Twitter ? of himself in his underwear ? sparked an uproar in the late spring of 2011.

After initially denying it was him in the picture or that he sent it, Weiner eventually came clean, confessing that he had carried on "inappropriate" conversations through Twitter, Facebook, email and the phone with six women over three years.

But less than two years after the stunning fall from grace, Weiner, 48, appeared to be in the midst of a remarkable, and carefully orchestrated, comeback.

Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., announces his resignation from Congress after previously admitting that he sent inappropriate pictures from his social media account.

Two months after he announced a return from political exile to run for his hometown's biggest job, he was near or at the top in several polls, despite a barrage of pun-filled front-page headlines focusing on his salacious history.

It's unclear if the admission his reckless behavior continued after it was first exposed will hurt his standing with voters, but three mayoral contenders have already urged Weiner to withdraw from the race.

"The sideshows of this election have gotten in the way of the debate we should be having about the future of this city," said Bill de Blasio, one of his Democratic contenders. "And yes, I'm talking about Anthony Weiner.? Enough is enough."

Weiner said he had no intention of calling it quits. He?s one of several politicians caught up in sex scandals who are mounting comebacks ? including former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, who is running for city comptroller five years after a romp with a prostitute was revealed.

With just 49 days to go before the Democratic primary in the mayoral race, Weiner said he was surprised ?that more things didn?t come out sooner.?

He apologized several times to Abedin and to anyone he ever sexted, took full responsibility for the sexting and said he didn?t blame anyone for being ?curious? about it.

Facebook soars after 2Q results beat estimates

This Tuesday, July 16, 2013, photo, shows a sign seen at Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif. Facebook reports quarterly earnings on Wednesday, July 24, 2013. (AP Photo/Ben Margot)

(AP) ? Facebook's stock is flying high after the world's biggest social network posted higher revenue from mobile ads and delivered a healthy second-quarter profit that reversed a loss in the same period a year ago.

The results, which come on the heels of weaker-than-expected results from online search leader Google Inc., signal that Facebook's aggressive push into the mobile advertising market continues to pay off. The company began showing mobile advertisements for the first time last spring. On Wednesday, Facebook said mobile ads accounted for a whopping 41 percent of its total advertising revenue.

The Menlo Park, Calif.-based company's stock jumped $4.48, or 17 percent, to $30.99 in extended trading. The shares had closed the regular trading session at $26.51. Facebook's stock priced at $38 when the company went public in May 2012, but hasn't hit that level since.

"I'm completely surprised," said Gartner analyst Brian Blau, summing up the sentiments of many investors who've watched Facebook's stock price stagnate over the past year due in large part to concerns about its mobile prospects.

"I was actually thinking that maybe they would have a soft quarter," he added, citing a softening of display advertising revenue ? Facebook's bread and butter ? across the industry. "That seems not to be the case."

Facebook Inc. earned $333 million, or 13 cents per share, in the April-June period. That's up from a loss of $157 million, or 8 cents per share, in the same period a year ago. Adjusted earnings were $488 million, or 19 cents per share in the latest quarter, above the 14 cents that analysts were expecting.

Facebook's revenue grew 53 percent to $1.81 billion from $1.18 billion, well above the $1.62 million that analysts polled by FactSet were expecting. The company has also quickened the pace of its revenue growth. In the first quarter, revenue grew 38 percent and in the fourth quarter of last year, 40 percent.

Jefferies analyst Brian Pitz called the quarter's results "impressive" and noted that Facebook saw its highest revenue growth since the fourth quarter of 2011, when it was still a private company.

Mobile ad revenue was $655.6 million, or 41 percent of the quarter's total advertising revenue of $1.6 billion. In the first quarter, mobile accounted for 30 percent of total ad revenue.

"We've made good progress growing our community, deepening engagement and delivering strong financial results, especially on mobile," said CEO Mark Zuckerberg, in a statement. "The work we've done to make mobile the best Facebook experience is showing good results and provides us with a solid foundation for the future."

Research firm eMarketer expects Facebook to increase its mobile advertising revenue more than fourfold to over $2 billion this year. This would give the company a 13 percent share of the global mobile ad market, up from about 5 percent last year.

That said, Google is a distant No. 1 when it comes to mobile ads. EMarketer estimates that the company held a 52 percent share of the global $8.8 billion mobile ad market last year. This year, the firm expects Google's share to grow to 56 percent.

In a conference call with analysts, Zuckerberg sought to ease concerns that teenagers are growing tired of Facebook and flocking to newer, hipper services such as (Facebook-owned) Instagram.

"Based on our data, that isn't true," he said. "It's difficult to measure this perfectly since some young people lie about their age, but based on the best data we have, we believe we have close to fully penetrated in the U.S. teen demographic for a while, and the number of teens using Facebook on a daily and monthly basis has been steady over the past year and a half."

Facebook has also been working to increase its international advertising revenue, since most of its users live outside of the United States. The company announced this week that more than 100 million people access Facebook using traditional, non-smart phones in countries like India, Indonesia and the Philippines.

More than 53 percent, or $965 million, of the quarter's revenue came from outside the U.S. and Canada.

Facebook had 1.15 billion monthly active users as of June 30, up 21 percent from a year ago. The number of monthly mobile users grew 51 percent to 819 million.

Borough President Signature Challenge Brouhaha Moves to Brooklyn

5th Annual "Salute To New York City Nonprofits And The Neighborhoods They Serve"

State Senator Eric Adams. (Photo: Getty)

With the deadline for filing petition challenges now passed, the tried-and-true tradition of denouncing the challengers has begun.

This time, it?s not the Queens?s borough president?s race, where one candidate?accused?another of thwarting the democratic process, but Brooklyn?s, where?John Gangemi, a septuagenarian candidate for Brooklyn borough president, last night tore into his Democratic rival Eric Adams for an 11th-hour objection to his petitions.

(Staten Island?s borough president race has its own dust-up as well.)

?What is he so afraid of? Let?s both put our records before the voters and let them make the decision,? Mr. Gangemi, a councilman more than 30 years ago, raged in a blistering statement. ?Then again, if I had the record Sen. Adams does, I might seek to eliminate any alternative as well.?

The Adams camp, however, defended the move, saying they?d found more than 600 blank spaces on Mr. Gangemi?s petitions and other discrepancies as well. Later today, the Board of Elections will make public all petition challenges filed across the city.

?After finding more than 600 blank signatures in Mr. Gangemi?s filing, we were compelled to do a further examination, which revealed numerous other instances of potentially fraudulent activity,? said Adams spokesman Evan Thies. ?We are merely ensuring that the law is followed, and that no taxpayer money is used through the campaign finance program to fund the campaign of a candidate who is not legally entitled to be on the ballot ? Brooklyn deserves a fair election and these questions can only be answered through a public airing of the record.?

Mr. Gangemi is a long-shot candidate but he is also the only Democrat standing between the state senator and Borough Hall. Political observers expect Mr. Adams, who has vastly out-raised Mr. Gangemi, to easily win the Democratic primary. But, as Mr. Gangemi noted, Mr. Adams has a complicated past.

In April, it was revealed he was likely one of the elected officials ex-State Senator Shirley Huntley?now serving a year in prison for embezzling from a sham nonprofit?wiretapped and that Mr. Adams was possibly under investigation as well.

?Adams?s challenge is particularly disturbing given the fact that his name recently surfaced as one of several public officials on wiretaps made by convicted ex-Senator Shirley Huntley,? Mr. Gangemi continued. ?The FBI has been looking into Adams?s role in the controversial AEG deal involving a contract at the Aqueduct Racino after a scathing Inspector General report identified Adams?s involvement in the corrupt deal and in procuring illegal campaign contributions.?

Mr. Adams, according to a 2010 state inspector general?s report, played a key role in the controversial plan to bring a racetrack casino to south Queens. While the report excoriates Mr. Adams and other elected officials for their close involvement in an alleged bid-rigging scheme that led to one bidder being dropped for another, Mr. Adams was not charged with any wrongdoing.

Manchester United humbled in Japan against Yokohama Marinos

Manchester United stumbled to a 3-2 defeat against Japan's Yokohama Marinos Tuesday in their second loss in three games under new manager David Moyes.

The English champions fell behind in the very first minute but they recovered to lead 2-1 heading into the second half thanks to Jesse Lindgard's strike and a Yokohama own goal.

However, Fabio Aguiar headed the scores level before Yoshihito Fujita's winner three minutes from time removed further gloss from United's pre-season Asian tour.

So far under Moyes, United have lost 1-0 in Bangkok and won 5-1 in Melbourne, and they got off to a horror start in hot and humid conditions in Yokohama.

The game was just one minute old when Brazilian striker Marquinhos latched on to a poor clearance from United custodian David de Gea to fire the hosts in front from inside the box.

The setback stung the Premier League champions and talented Belgian teen Adnan Januzaj nearly put them level with a crisp strike which was just off-target.

Januzaj, 18, then got back to head a chance off the line but it was new signing Wilfried Zaha who orchestrated United's opener when he drifted past his man into the box.

The ex-Crystal Palace man's low cross caused mayhem and it was Lindgard on hand to net his third goal in two games, after Saturday's brace against the A-League All-Stars.

Yokohama handed United the lead when Januzaj, United's reserve team player of last season, fired a free-kick which came off the unfortunate Masakazu Tashiro and over the line.

But the hosts were back on terms after the break when de Gea failed to deal with a corner and Brazilian defender Fabio Aguiar's header moved the score to 2-2.

Shinji Kagawa drew a huge cheer when he came on just after the hour-mark, and United's Japanese playmaker nearly raised the roof when he got clear -- but his shot failed to beat the 'keeper.

Ashley Young hit one into the side-netting but it was Yokohama who had the final word when Fujita swept home the winning goal in the 87th minute.

Moyes, facing the stiff challenge of following Alex Ferguson's 27-year, trophy-laden reign, now leads his team west for a game against Japan's Cerezo Osaka on Friday.

Expert Tips For Purchasing Boys Snowboard Clothes | Content for ...

Author: Robert T Scott | Total views: 43 Comments: 0
Word Count: 1100 Date:

Shopping for kids outdoor clothing can be a challenge at best of times, but attempting to find the right clothing for the cool weather can be trick if you don't know what to look for. Whether you are hitting the slopes in the Alpes or flying like a pro in your regional snow sports center, finding the right snowboard equipment is very crucial. We've assembled an easy to follow guide which will be your bible when it comes to purchasing kids snowboard wear.

Snowboard Jackets.

There are 3 types of ski jackets which you can buy. Here's a quick review of each:

Insulated Jackets.

When it comes to snowboard jackets this is often the most popular. Goose down feathers or artificial fibres are most commonly used in these coats for heat. The external layer of the coat will be gauged for its waterproof levels in mm. One brand of snowboard coats that has been designed with waterproofing as the primary marketing point is Trespass' Tres-Tex range. Insulated jackets can be used for more tasks, not just for snowboarding. Hill walkers and even dog walkers have been known to utilize these in the winter months.

Shell.

The external layer protection is offered by the shell coats. They are not insulated and so are best used with multiple layers, which you can adjust to various conditions and levels of activity. Utilizing a special waterproofing material and being breathable makes shell jackets an excellent choice for protecting against moisture.

3 in 1 Jackets.

The 3 in 1 jacket is very popular as it's so versatile. The 3-in-1 coat combines shell insulation and mid-layers all into one. The removable inner layer of a 3 in 1 jacket is a fantastic feature as you can wear this as a jacket on its own when the weather isn't too cool.

Specialists recommend that you try different jackets to see which ones fit the best and they'll be most comfortable. If your children like to play outside or take part in outdoor activities all year round, the best jacket would be a 3 in 1 as you can remove or add layers to it. This means you can quickly adapt to any weather condition without requiring separate coats.

Snowboard Trousers.

When purchasing ski pants for kids it's advisable to buy ones that closely match the details and spec of the snowboard jackets. Pants with a reinforced knees and seat should be the one crucial design to look for when purchasing ski pants. Not only are beginners going to fall over a lot, but kids are especially likely to take a tumble. Reinforcement will stop any rips and tears, making your trousers last longer and are better value for money.

See to it that your kid has lots of room in their snowboard pants. This is crucial as kids grow extremely quickly and you don't want to have to fork out for expensive ski wear year after year. A good way to avoid doing this is to get snowboard pants with an adjustable waist and plenty of room in the legs.

Design Details.

There are also a few design details you should keep an eye out for when picking a children's ski clothing. Here is a brief list of the key things to look out for:

Waterproof Levels.

Waterproofing depth is another very important attribute to look for in a ski jacket. We advised that ideally your kid's snowboard coat should be waterproof from 10,000 millimetres-- 20,000 millimetres.

Breathability.

While the weather might be cool outside, interior your ski coat you will be working up a sweat from the active energy. A breathable coat will allow any moisture and sweat to escape from the breathable material and still keep you hot.

Venting.

This is utilized for the same reason as breathable coats. Most great snowboard jackets will have zipped vents at the arm pits, which let in cool air and help to cool down the body when it gets too overheated.

Taped Seams.

Having a waterproof coat is excellent but is pointless if your jacket has no taped seams. With waterproof jackets, the stitching in the fabric creates a weak point which can be a problem as water can seep in through the small holes in the fabric.' Taped seams help to stop this, by covering the stitching.

Cuffs.

You will want your kid's snowboard wear to have adjustable cuffs, generally made with Velcro straps. Adjustable cuffs are important to stop ice cold water from running up your arm caused by snow getting in.

Extras.

You can get lots of other extras that can make a terrific addition to your ski jacket or snowboard pants. The main ones that you will most likely use and often need are:

Removable And Adjustable Hood.

Often people pull their hood up over their headgear which can cause trapped wind to get caught in the sides of the hood. A removable or adjustable hood helps with this issue.

Snow skirt.

A snow skirt is included or can be attached onto the bottom of a ski jacket, to prevent snow riding up and onto your back when you wipe out.

Colour.

Purchasing gender neutral colors for your ski clothes is an excellent way to make them last longer. This will ensure that you can hand them down to young siblings, once the elder outgrows it. You can save yourself a lot of money by not having to buy more ski wear every year.

Pockets.

A a lot of people underestimate how much things you need have with you while you're skiing or snowboarding. Most people have important items they need to keep with them. Lift passes, money and smart phones are most common along with your ski goggles. Having inside pockets with zips are wonderful for valuable items like money and your cell phone while specially designed pockets on the outside for lift passes and ski goggles are also an excellent feature. These are small particulars which make your snowboard coat a lot more user friendly.

So now you have the low down on purchasing ski clothes for kids. Next time you're flying off on a ski holiday you will be completely prepared to make the most of your journey!
