LONDON (AP) ? An appearance by the hapless comic character Mr. Bean was one of the highlights of the London Olympics opening ceremony. Yet a series of Keystone Cops moments has games organizers hoping they don't keep up this slapstick routine in real life.

London police acknowledged Monday that last week they lost a set of keys to Wembley ? one of the most famous soccer stadiums in the world and an Olympic venue in London ? and had been forced to hastily change the stadium locks.

It was the latest unintentionally comic moment to beset the games and has raised fears of what else may be in store.

News of the lock debacle followed a diplomatic tiff with India, triggered when a woman who was not part of the country's athletic delegation marched right beside India's flag bearer at Friday's opening ceremony.

Olympic officials insisted there was no security risk from either incident. Games chief Sebastian Coe said the Indian team's interloper was an accredited cast member from the opening ceremony who "got slightly over-excited."

Police said the Wembley keys appeared to have been lost rather than stolen and "measures were taken immediately to secure all key areas of the venue."

Earlier Olympic glitches ranged from worrying to merely embarrassing.

Security arrangements were thrown into chaos weeks before the opening ceremony when private security contractor G4S acknowledged it would not be able to provide all the guards it had promised. Thousands of soldiers, sailors and air force personnel ? some just back from Afghanistan ? had to be drafted in to plug the Olympic security gaps.

Then last week, as the Olympic soccer competition kicked off, organizers mistakenly displayed the South Korean flag on a jumbo screen while introducing the North Korean women's team. There could hardly have been a worse mix-up ? the two countries are still technically at war.

Britons, at least, are quick to see the humor. Opticians Specsavers ran a full-page ad displaying the two completely different-looking Korean flags and suggesting that anyone who can't tell the difference should stop by for a checkup.

Then Welsh footballer Joe Allen was listed as English in the British team's official program, prompting a wave of mocking commentary across Twitter.

Over the weekend, television shots of so many empty seats at Olympic venues enraged many ordinary Britons, who had struggled for months to get tickets, many unsuccessfully.

Organizers are now scrambling to fill rows of empty seats allocated but not used by members of the "Olympic family" ? national federations, sponsors and the media. Among the remedies: 150 British soldiers were told to stop handling security duties for a few hours Sunday and go watch the Olympic qualifying for women's gymnastics.

"I was told to let the boys come in and enjoy the show," Staff Sgt. Marc Robson of the 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery told The Associated Press. "Look at them, they seem to be liking it just fine."

Ellis Cashmore, professor of culture, media and sport at Staffordshire University, said the sheer number of Olympic errors has had a numbing effect.

"It's almost as if we've become anesthetized to them," he said. "It's almost as if we're expecting another gaffe.

"If everything had gone smoothly up till now, (the missing keys) would be a catastrophe. Losing they keys to the stadium! If you lose your house keys, it's a major crisis."

The farcical moments started more than a year before the games, when the official Olympic countdown clock was unveiled in London's Trafalgar Square ? and promptly broke down.

On Friday, during a mass celebratory bell-ringing to mark the start of the games, Olympics Secretary Jeremy Hunt's bell went flying off its handle and narrowly avoided a bystander. No one was hurt, but the incident, captured by a TV camera, drew comparisons to Mr. Bean, the accident-prone Englishman created by comedian Rowan Atkinson.

It's fortunate that the British have knack for laughing at their mistakes. That talent for self-deprecation helps explain the popularity of London Mayor Boris Johnson ? a brainy but gaffe-prone politician once forced to apologized to the entire city of Liverpool after accusing its residents of "wallowing" in victimhood.

Putting a positive spin on things, Johnson listed Hunt's bell-ringing clanger as one of the reasons to be cheerful about the Olympics.

"Jeremy Hunt has introduced a new sport to the games, to go with the discus, shot-put, javelin," Johnson wrote in Monday's Daily Telegraph. "It is bell-whanging. ... The rules have yet to be codified ? there is still a dispute about whether you get extra points for hitting a spectator ? but you can be sure they will be codified in London."

In this new age of social media ? and with the eyes of the world on London ? more blunders are inevitable, Cashmore said.

"I think previous Olympics have been just as marred by security lapses, but now we are so acutely aware of everything that these things are magnified," he said. "We are looking at things microscopically now."

In 1998 I apparently became an entrepreneur! I had an idea, found the resources and then set out to make a difference and build a company.

Like many of you, building a business as an owner is done as much through passon and commitment to creating change and making a difference as it is through skills and ability. IN 1998 I didn't have the skills but I had the passion, drive, tenacity and a vision.

My vision was that the world could now be connected, in real-time, on demand, through personal choice. It was a new world where individuals could build personal brands and personal networks. A world where the 'good' rise to the top, not those who manipulate, lie, abuse, focus on monopolistic behaviour and greed.

A distributed world, where ideas are shared, innovation saves companies and behaviour changes because the connectivity of the world highlights those who are not good to be in business with and highlights the integrity, values and ethics of people. Through online search, we can see what is written and share about others and decide if that person suits our own values. What an amazing revolution in business to be part of.. and we are all part of it, together.

Last night as I watched the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics I saw the history of UK wealth and progress, my father was in awe of the world class show, sitting next to me and as the Industrial Revolution was depicted with the tall Mills coming out of the ground my dad turned to me and said 'the dark satanic mills", it made me shudder, I thought about how hard those days were for those who were not part of the shift, the loss of air, the loss of green fields. That was progress then. progress now is that we can return to being in control of our own lives, work for ourselves, share our success with others rather than control them, sit in our homes if we wish and work via the Internet, not be judged on how many staff we control or the size of our wealth. Wealth can be discreet and can be created to make a difference to many more than just ourselves.

I feel it is a good time to be an entrepreneur. When I meet people just entering the self employed world following redundancy, or young people, who cannot find jobs I say grab the opportunity to build your brand and your future, enjoy it, drive it and lets ensure the values you hold, knowing that being Open, Random and Supportive with others is actually more fundamental to business growth than many have yet discovered. Those people still in those 'dark satanic mills' of the 20th Century ways of business, when they wake up and see the air we are breathing, oh boy, their respect and desire to learn from all of us will be wonderful.

As the third week of summer programming comes to a close,
Mayor Thomas M. Menino and Daphne Griffin, Boston?s Chief of Human Services and
Boston Centers for Youth & Families? (BCYF) Executive Director, remind
Boston residents that BCYF?s offers three free daily citywide sports centers
throughout the summer.

Located at Sartori Stadium at East Boston Memorial Park,
White Stadium at Franklin Park and Moakley Park in South Boston, the sports
centers offer boys and girls ages 7-14 the opportunity to learn the fundamentals
of a variety of sports.? Activities offered differ
slightly by location but may include: baseball/softball, tennis, basketball,
football, golf and soccer as well as a variety of non-sports recreational
activities.?

?Our sports centers give young children the opportunity to
try out a variety of sports in a fun, non-competitive environment,? said Daphne
Griffin.? ?While the kids are having fun learning new sports and making friends,
they are also enhancing their skills in social interaction, physical
conditioning, and psychological development.?

Daily registration is accepted but pre-registration is
preferred.? The BCYF East Boston Summer Recreation & Sports Center and the
BCYF Moakley Park Sports Center begin each day at 9 a.m.? The BCYF White Stadium
Sports Center begins at 8:30 a.m.? The East Boston and Moakley Centers are only
a couple years old but the White Stadium Sports Center has been operating for 21

Lawyers: Shower abuse victim to sue Penn State

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) ? Lawyers for a man who claims to be the unknown victim abused in a Penn State shower by Jerry Sandusky in a case that led to Joe Paterno's firing say he intends to sue the university.

The lawyers said in a statement that they have done an extensive investigation and gathered "overwhelming evidence" on details of the abuse.

The statement says the victim wants to hold officials accountable for "egregious and reckless conduct that facilitated the horrific abuse."

Penn State says it cannot comment on pending litigation.

Prosecutors have said they don't know the identity of the boy molested by Sandusky in 2001. The encounter was spotted by a former graduate assistant who reported the abuse to school officials, including Paterno, but none of them told police.

The victim is not named in the statement, and the AP generally does not identify victims of sex crimes without their consent.

Sandusky awaits sentencing after being convicted of 45 sex abuse counts.

Diane Prestemon, 79, of Waukon, died Monday, July 23, 2012, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 31, at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with burial at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 30, at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Diane Benedict Prestemon was born July 28, 1932, in Frederic, Wis., the daughter of Percival E. and Gladys Teresa (Hanevold) Benedict. She spent her early years in the Black River Falls, Wis., area and moved with her family to Waukon when she was a junior in high school, graduating from Waukon High School in 1950. She went to work for Northwestern Bell as a long distance operator. On Dec. 20, 1953, she married Richard Gordon ?Dick? Prestemon at St. John?s Lutheran Church in Waukon. They moved to Ames, where Dick completed college and Diane worked for Northwestern Bell again. While Dick was in the service, Diane spent a year and a half with him living in Germany. Following Dick?s discharge in October 1956, they moved to Des Moines, where Diane worked for Bell Labs for five years. For the next three years they lived in Dallas Center before moving to Waukon in 1966 where they have lived ever since. For the past 10 years, Diane and Dick have enjoyed spending the winters in Ocala and Williston, Fla.

Diane was never one to stay idle long and worked in a variety of areas. She was an antiques collector and dealer and operated ?The Cellar? antique store in Waukon as well as sold through antique malls in Decorah. For a short time she worked for a jewelry distributor at local major retailers and for 10 years Diane and Dick owned and operated ?The Landmark Supper Club? between Waukon and Lansing.

Diane was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon and active in Ladies Circle. She was also a former troop leader for Girl Scouts. Diane was an excellent cook and baker and also found time for caning chairs and other antique furniture, rosemaling, and doing sewing and needle point. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed all card games.

Most of her favorite times were spent with her family whether that be traveling on family vacations, following her children and grandchildren?s activities, or just relaxing with their dog, Gilbert.

Survivors include her husband, Richard ?Dick? of Waukon; two children, Kristin (Michael) Baxter of Waverly and Eric (Jodi) of Dysart; six grandchildren, Justus (Sarah) and Preston Baxter and Chelsie, Matthew, Garrett and Conner Prestemon; a great-grandchild, Aedric; two sisters, Dolores (Don) Olson of Palmdale, Calif., and Michele Rourke of Tamarac, Fla.; and a sister-in-law, Judy Benedict of Dayton, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, P.E. ?Bud? Benedict.

Study: Obese Children Will Have 50% Higher Risk of Colon Cancer

This study set out to examine the relationship between childhood obesity and future diagnoses of urothelial, or bladder, and colorectal cancers.

METHODOLOGY:?Researchers at Tel Aviv University appropriated the health information of 1.1 million males that had been collected by the Israeli Defense Forces and then linked this medical data to the National Cancer Registry. They looked specifically at the rates of urothelial and colorectal cancer over a follow-up period of 18 years in those who were obese, meaning that they had a body mass index (BMI) in the 85^th?percentile and above, at age 17. Adjustments were made for year of birth, level of education, and religiosity.

RESULTS:?Those whose BMI placed them in the range of obesity in adolescence had a 1.42% greater chance of developing urothelial or colorectal cancers in adulthood.

CONCLUSION:?Childhood obesity is associated with a 50% higher risk of urothelial or colorectal cancers.

IMPLICATIONS:?While these results only tell us about the incidences of two specific types of cancer, Ari Shamiss, one of the doctors involved in the study, has indicated that he is currently researching connections between childhood obesity and other cancers in the hopes of uncovering other connections. We still need to learn whether obesity is directly causing the high risk of cancer, and, perhaps most essentially, whether losing weight is effective ? and if so, how much and when ? in lowering it.

Attention turns to NCAA and Penn State's fate

Now the NCAA gets its say on Penn State.

College sports' governing body was expected to deal a series of heavy blows to the Nittany Lions football program on Monday, less than two weeks after a devastating report accused coach Joe Paterno and other top university officials of concealing child sex abuse allegations against a retired assistant coach for years to avoid bad publicity. A news conference was scheduled for 9 a.m. in Indianapolis.

A multi-year bowl ban, lost scholarships, recruiting limits, probation and a multimillion-dollar fine all seem likely for the program Paterno built into a national power under the slogan of "success with honor." And the NCAA, heavily criticized for its sometimes-ponderous pace in deciding penalties as scandals mounted at Ohio State, Auburn, USC and elsewhere, acted with unprecedented swiftness in arriving at what it called "corrective and punitive" sanctions for a team that is trying to start over with a new coach and a new outlook.

The NCAA announced no details Sunday in serving notice that it would indeed weigh in on perhaps the worst scandal in American college sports history. President Mark Emmert cautioned last week that he had not ruled out the possibility of shutting down the football program altogether ? the so-called death penalty, famously used against Southern Methodist a quarter-century ago ? saying he had "never seen anything as egregious" as the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.

The NCAA announcement Sunday came shortly after Penn State took down its famed statue of Paterno, six months to the day since his death from lung cancer. The university said leaving it up would be a "recurring wound" for Sandusky's victims. An accomplished defensive coordinator, Sandusky was convicted of molesting young boys over more than a decade.

A harsh penalty from the NCAA could have repercussions well beyond Penn State's football program, which generates large profits ? more than $50 million, according to the U.S. Department of Education ? that subsidize dozens of other sports at the school. The potential for a historic NCAA penalty also is worrisome for a region where the economy is built at least partially on the strength and popularity of the football program.

Kayla Weaver, a Penn State senior and member of the dance team called the Lionettes, said an NCAA death penalty would not only make football players transfer, but it also would force program changes for cheerleaders, dancers and band members, and would hurt season-ticket holders.

"It could ruin everything that we've built here," said Weaver, from Franklin Lakes, N.J.

Added Derek Leonard, a 31-year-old university construction project coordinator who grew up in the area: "It's going to kill our town."

Emmert put the Penn State matter on the fast track. Other cases that were strictly about violating the NCAA rulebook have dragged on for months and even years. There was no sign that the infractions committee so familiar to college sports fans was involved this time around as Emmert moved quickly, no doubt aided by the July 12 release of the report by former FBI director Louis Freeh and what it said about Paterno and the rest of the Penn State leadership.

The investigation focused partly on university officials' decision not to go to child-welfare authorities in 2001 after a coaching assistant told Paterno that he had seen Sandusky sexually abusing a boy in the locker room showers. Penn State officials already knew about a previous allegation against Sandusky by that time, from 1998.

The leaders, the report said, "repeatedly concealed critical facts relating to Sandusky's child abuse from authorities, the university's board of trustees, the Penn State community and the public at large."

Sandusky is awaiting sentencing after being convicted last month of sexually abusing 10 boys over 15 years.

Emmert had warned Penn State last fall that the NCAA would be examining the "exercise of institutional control" within the athletic department, and said it was clear that "deceitful and dishonest behavior" could be considered a violation of ethics rules. So, too, could a failure to exhibit moral values or adhere to ethics guidelines.

The Freeh report also said school had "decentralized and uneven" oversight of compliance issues ? laws, regulations, policies and procedures ? as required by the NCAA.

Recent major scandals, such as improper payments to the family of Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush while he was at Southern California, and players at Ohio State trading memorabilia for cash and tattoos, have resulted in bowl bans and the loss of scholarships.

Current NCAA rules limit the so-called "death penalty" to colleges already on probation that commit another major violation. That was the case when SMU had its program suspended in the mid-80s, the last time the punishment was imposed on a major college football program.

NCAA leaders have indicated in recent months they are willing to return to harsher penalties for the worst offenses.

"This is completely different than an impermissible benefits scandal like (what) happened at SMU, or anything else we've dealt with. This is as systemic a cultural problem as it is a football problem. There have been people that said this wasn't a football scandal," Emmert told PBS recently. "It was that but much more. And we'll have to figure out exactly what the right penalties are. I don't know that past precedent makes particularly good sense in this case because it's really an unprecedented problem."

Another question was whether Penn State ? and, by extension, Paterno, major college football's winningest coach ? would have any of his victories thrown out. Paterno won 409 games for the school in his 46 seasons as head coach.

As Penn State awaited its fate, construction workers removed the larger-than-life monument of its Hall of Fame coach. The Paterno family released a statement criticizing Penn State's decision to remove the statue, saying it was made in haste and before all the facts about Paterno's role in the Sandusky scandal were known.

The bronze statue, weighing more than 900 pounds, was erected in 2001 in honor of Paterno's record-setting 324th Division I coaching victory and his "contributions to the university." Penn State President Rodney Erickson said he decided the sculpture had to go because it "has become a source of division and an obstacle to healing."

Absent a change in battery chemistry, Li-ion is going to impose some limitations on where Apple can go with the iPhone 5?s design and spec sheet.

The new or upgraded features expected in the iPhone 5 that will require the most from the battery are the display, 4G LTE wireless connectivity and a more powerful processor. Leaked images show the Retina display growing from three and a half to four inches; not surprising, since the average Android phone display is now over four inches. 4G LTE connectivity seems like a no-brainer, too, given the demands of mobile video, iCloud features and the Android competition. We can also expect a faster version of the A5 processor with even more powerful 3D graphics.

Each of these new features can end up drawing more power and generating more heat. Both of those are challenges for Li-ion technology. That?s why the new iPad?s battery ended up being some 70 percent bigger and heavier than its predecessor yet still offers somewhat shorter battery life, and why Apple faces some difficult choices for the iPhone 5. The iPhone 5 battery is going to have to be notably bigger than its predecessor. Even with the increase in battery?s X and Y dimensions made possible by a larger screen, the result could still be shorter battery life?in terms of run-time per charge, cycle life and calendar life.

This is because Li-on battery technology is falling short in two areas: energy density and thermal sensitivity. Energy density determines the amount of run-time you can pack into a give size (volumetric) or weight (gravimetric) of a battery. Unfortunately, Moore?s Law doesn?t apply to batteries. Since the first Li-ion batteries hit the market in 1991, the transistor count in the devices they power has increased a thousandfold in response to consumer demand for more features and higher performance. Li-ion batteries have eked out a mere 3X increase in their volumetric energy density in that same period, and battery manufacturers are having a harder and harder time squeezing more energy into them.

Increased packaging efficiency is one way of getting higher energy density. For instance, the non-removable Li-ion pouch cells now used in the majority of smartphone models eliminate the protective casing needed for user-replaceable batteries. They?re just a sealed bag containing carefully stacked or wound anode and cathode sheets, separators between them, and?permeating all of these layers?a liquid electrolyte. By relying on the smartphone case for protection, there?s more room for the active materials that actually store energy.

Packaging efficiency is where Apple may have a slight advantage when it comes to the iPhone 5. There are two ways to place a battery in a smartphone. One way is two layers of electronics (screen and circuitry) with a space ?carved out? for the battery. This is the approach taken in the iPhone 4S. The alternative is to use three layers: screen, circuitry, and battery, as in the Motorola RAZR line (both RAZR and RAZR MAXX).

At first glance, it would seem that the three layer approach, by permitting a larger battery, would deliver longer run-time, but the narrower battery in the carve-out approach actually offers higher energy density. Li-ion pouch batteries have a built-in printed circuit board that is connected to the positive and negative terminals of each cell and provides active protection against short circuits, overcharge and forced discharge. A narrower, rectangular battery can put this PCB on the short edge, leaving more room for the active materials and thus delivering a somewhat higher energy density than a square battery.
