Poulter and Rose get Europe badly needed point

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) ? Ian Poulter came through again, teaming with Justin Rose for a 1-up victory over Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson and giving Europe a point it desperately needed Saturday at the Ryder Cup.

The Americans lead 6-4, but are up by multiple holes in the remaining two foursomes.

Led by Keegan Bradley and Phil Mickelson, who are 3-0 after a 7-and-6 thrashing of Lee Westwood and Luke Donald earlier Saturday, the Americans have been overwhelming.

Europe has had few answers, and captain Jose Maria Olazabal turned to Poulter and Rose to try and stem the momentum. Poulter holds the European record for winning percentage at 10-3-0, and he didn't disappoint Olazabal.

They played just well enough to hold off the Americans, closing out the match when Simpson missed an 8-footer.

Raissman: Growing pains for NFL Network

The following is not a blanket indictment of the NFL Network. But thanks to Time Warner Cable, our local cable monopolist that finally caved to Roger Goodell, a new set of targets are now in sight.

Rich Eisen, NFLN?s frontman is an engaging guy. He?s got a lot of gameshow host in him too. During Thursday?s pregame leading into Browns-Ravens, Eisen said Baltimore having to play Sunday night then return to play Thursday night was a tough situation.

Who created this mess? Eisen did not address that. If Eisen was for real, he would have somehow ? even subtly ? explained how NFL owners, for the benefit of NFLN and their bank accounts, added five games to its ?Thursday Night Football? schedule creating a hardship for participating teams and severely compromising the on-field product.

Instead, he treated viewers like morons. An honest explanation was not a high priority for Eisen.

Still he didn?t come off nearly as clueless as Michelle Beisner, an NFLN reporter who was in Seattle for the controversial finish of Packers-Seahawks. After the game she interviewed Pete Carroll on the field, but never ? no never ? asked one question about the way the game ended. Or the replacement officials call that gift wrapped his illegitimate win.

Instead, Beisner asked the following crucial questions: 1)?Coach, congratulations. What an unbelievable victory and finish. What do you have to say about this team right now?? 2)?Your defense, eight sacks in the first half. Talk about what your defense was able to accomplish tonight?? 3)?And how do you feel your young quarterback (Russell Wilson) handled the bright lights of Monday night football tonight??

This was embarrassing. Doubt NFLN suits will be running Beisner?s one-on-one in their best interviews of 2012 segment. Beisner shouldn?t take a solo hit here. Whoever was producing this segment should have been in her ear screaming: ?Ask him about the play.?

Bet Steve Mariucci would have. Unfortunately, if you haven?t played in the NFL you might not understand what he?s saying. Mariucci, one of NFLN?s marquee personalities, often sounds like he?s sending in plays to a QB. Not only is he too technical, he appears to be reading from notes. Someone at NFLN should remind him about the virtues of spontaneity.

Mariucci is not nearly as technical as NFLN game analyst Mike Mayock, who sounds like he?s in a film session with coaches rather than broadcasting to the unwashed masses.

Still, for us, NFLN is well worth watching. The reasons should be obvious.

ESPN BOOKING ISIAH?
There?s a lot of NBA stuff going on at ESPN, as the Bristol Clown Community College faculty searches for new talent. Reports had Isiah Thomas auditioning (he was in Bristol Wednesday) and, according to NBA stoolies, Mike D?Antoni also took a shot at a gig.

The Thomas stuff is interesting. Are ESPN honchos looking to pair Zeke with Magic Johnson, his long-time nemeis, in ABC?s NBA studio? The matchup could produce major sparks, something the sleep inducing show desperately needs.

And if Thomas were to get the gig, how close would he be tracking the Knicks and James (Guitar Jimmy) Dolan?
?

FORGET-ME-YES
These multi-media former quarterbacks should keep better track of what they are saying or risk being accused of flip-flopping.

Like Rich Gannon. On Sunday?s Jets-Dolphins CBS telecast he said: ?I don?t want to hear Jets fans blaming (Mark) Sanchez. It?s on his receivers. They can?t get open.?

Yet a day later on CBS Sports Network?s ?NFL Monday QB? Gannon said he ?doesn?t believe? in Sanchez.
The dude is confused. Or just forgot what he said Sunday.

INSIDE THE SNOOZE
Leave it to Cris Collinsworth to add a bizarre twist to the replacement referee mess.

Under the unwatchful eye of the replacements, Collinsworth said, the NFL returned to its rock-em-sock-em days. ?Nobody can tell me these games haven?t been more physical. It?s like going back to the ?60s or ?70s kind of football,? Collinsworth said on Showtime?s ?Inside the NFL.? ?And you?ve got the Kardashians refereeing.?

Maybe Collinsworth can get a Kardashian to be a guest panelist on ?Inside the NFL.? In that department, the show is now 0-for-3. Though Kris Jenkins, the latest chair warmer, would put on a show, but he wasn?t his feisty self. Clearly the Showtime/CBS brainiacs need some advice.

Bring in Tony Siragusa to mix it up. With this guy running his mouth, no one will fall asleep after the first half hour of what used to be a thrill-a-minute show.

NAME THAT MAN!
John (Pa Pinstripe) Sterling must have wanted to keep it a big secret. Tuesday night (Yankees-Twins) Suzyn (Ma Pinstripe) Waldman had the night off and another voice was yakking with him.

Joined the game in progress and had no idea who the guy was. Sterling didn?t identify the dude. He kept it a secret. Like he does with the score. The only way we found out the mystery guest was Jeff Nelson was by reading about it on Twitter.

ANDARIESE OUT

MSG moles say John Andariese, the veteran Knicks voice, will not return to the radio booth this season. ... His role of keeper of ?the media elite? has brought a new dimension to SNY?s Cris Carlin. On a recent edition of ?Loud Mouths? CC gave a thumbs up to Ramses Barden adding: ?And I?m not one of those Giants beat writers who fell in love with him three years ago.? What Carlin meant to say was these particular Giants beat writers will never be part of ?the media elite.? ... When Keith Hernandez shaved off his mustache it brought a $10,000 donation to the Jacquelyn Hernandez Adult Day Health Center in Brooklyn. The facility is named after his mom and assists Alzheimer patients.

DUDE OF THE WEEK
NICK BUONICONTI
For his devotion to finding a cure for paralysis. His son Marc?s life-changing spinal chord injury, sustained while making a tackle playing for The Citadel occurred in 1985, but Buoniconti?s commitment has only grown. One look into the Hall of Famer?s eye and you realize the extent of the love he has for his son. Last Monday, millions were raised for the Miami Project research fund at the 27th Annual Great Sports Legends Dinner in NYC. The annual event has raised nearly $93 million overall.

DWEEB OF THE WEEK
ROGER GOODELL

For allowing the owners to strong-arm him into locking out the officials for four months in order to save a few bucks. The sheriff is skilled at keeping law and order in a league populated by thugs and creeps, but he ain?t that tough. After the Monday night fiasco in Seattle, Goodell went into hiding, refusing to face the music. The sheriff shouldn?t worry though, his media valets (the ones whose constant rap was ?he works for the owners?) will always be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Oh, what a lucky man.

DOUBLE TALK
What Roger Goodell said (about call ending Green Bay-Seattle game): ?....That?s the beauty of sports and the beauty of officiating. There are controversial calls and people see them differently. I understand that. That?s the beauty of sports.?

What Roger Goodell meant to say: ?Jerry Jones handed me that ?beauty? line. The replacements got the call wrong. The Packers got jobbed. The deal got done because of it.?

Thomas Cook says turnaround on track

LONDON (Reuters) - Thomas Cook , the world's oldest travel group, said on Friday its turnaround plan was working, giving it confidence that it will meet market expectations for the year ending this month as it seeks to draw a line under a difficult 18 months.

The company, which was thrown a lifeline by lenders in May, said it was seeing an improvement in its finances and added that demand for last-minute summer holidays had been strong.

Analysts expect the 171-year-old company to post pretax profits of 35 million pounds ($56.7 million) for the year ending September 30, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S Estimates.

Thomas Cook will report full-year results on November 28. It said it was on track to meet expectations for the period, after posting a first-half loss in May of 328.3 million pounds.

"My priority has been to ensure a renewed focus on delivering to our plans for the current financial year," said Chief Executive Harriet Green in a statement.

Formerly the head of electronic parts distributor Premier Farnell , Green took over at Thomas Cook in July as part of a shake-up at the top of the company which also involved the appointment of a new chief financial officer earlier this year.

Rival operator TUI Travel said on Thursday that it was encouraged by the number of winter getaways being snapped up and that it had sold more summer holidays this year than a year ago.

Shares in Thomas Cook, which have risen 3 percent in the last three months, were down 1.6 percent at 15.75 pence in opening trade on Friday, valuing the firm at 151 million pounds. ($1=0.6176 British pounds)

Labour's immigration pains | Progress | News and debate from the ...

Crowd at Liverpool Street Station

There are still some senior Labour politicians, and a significant section of the liberal media, who continue to deny that immigration is one of the issues that most damages the Left.? Indeed, until the last couple of years, the standard response to any suggestion that immigration itself was problematic was to imply that this was racist. No debate was permitted, even as the number of arrivals continued to grow.

Immigration was a ?good thing?. Immigrants helped a dynamic economy become even more competitive, they filled jobs that nobody else wanted to do, and they kept inflation and wage rises at low levels even when the economy was buoyant.

Even today, barely a week goes by without the IPPR, or Jonathan Portes arguing that immigration has been good for the economy, and that the benefits of mass immigration far outweigh the costs.

The assertion that such a huge increase in the number of workers coming to the UK has had any effect on wages or employment has been repeatedly denied. This is rather astonishing as it will, after all, be the first time in economic history that an increased supply (of labour) has had no impact on the price (that is, wages).

So, have the fundamental laws of economics changed? Either there has been a paradigm shift or, more likely, the effect on wages have been ignored because it hasn?t (yet) concerned the affluent middle class

In any case, there are alternative interpretations. A House of Lords report found that there has been a downward effect on wages, especially for those at the bottom rung of the labour market. And the recent report by the Migration Advisory Committee, confirmed that immigration does have an effect on wages, decreasing those of lower-paid workers. In particular, the MAC estimated that: ?an extra 100 non-EU migrants are initially associated with 23 fewer native people employed?.

After losing the wages and employment argument, however, the same centre-Left pro-immigrationists argue that GDP has increased. Again, the House of Lords report pointed out that GDP, which measures the total output created by immigrants and pre-existing residents in the UK, is ?an irrelevant and misleading measure for the economic impacts of immigration on the resident population. The total size of an economy is not an indicator of prosperity or of residents? living standards.?

To put it bluntly, increasing numbers of voters are not prepared to pay the price of over-crowding, a diminished green belt and public services stretched to breaking point for an additional percentage point of GDP growth. The Left ignored the broader effects on quality of life, with increasing demands on housing provision, classroom sizes, traffic congestion or for health and social services. But there was no planning at all for the arrival of such large numbers as policy makers seemed to forget that migrant workers also need somewhere to live, that they travel, that they have families, and that they get ill.

It is becoming increasingly clear that the former editor of Prospect magazine, David Goodhart, was right when he argued that there is an increasingly acute dilemma, ? for progressives who want plenty of both solidarity (high social cohesion and generous welfare paid out of a progressive tax system) and diversity (equal respect for a wide range of peoples, values and ways of life).?

Now, as draconian spending cuts are being implemented the answer to these questions is becoming increasingly acute. At its heart is a problem that Michael Young and Peter Willmott?s Family and Kinship in East London highlighted half a century ago. Should the (possibly greater) needs of newly arrived immigrants trump the greater ?entitlement? of those who have lived longer in a community?

Who deserves a share of the cake, and how large should their share be? Is social housing allocation, for example, a matter of long term residency, nationality or hardship? Should benefits depend on how much one has contributed to society? What?s fair?

The last Labour government failed to introduce restrictions on the citizens of the new members of the European Union coming to work in the UK until it was far too late. In thrall to the demands of business for cheap and flexible labour, a nominally left of centre government lost control of its borders. And for too long, too many on the Left did not permit an open political debate about immigration, denouncing any criticism as racist.

Immigration remains a huge issue for voters, which is only likely to grow as recession deepens (which it will). Labour lost almost every seat in the south-east outside London and needs to win them back if it wants to regain power. But this does not mean that the people of Kent, Essex, Hertfordshire and Sussex are racist, or even Little Englanders. Britain is a hugely tolerant country which believes in fairness. It also has great ? and legitimate ? concerns about immigration. It is time for Labour and the Left to admit that too much immigration, too quickly, requires new answers rather than continuing to defend old nostrums.

Single Parent Dating: To Take The Challenge Or Not? |

Single parent dating

You were, to say the least, a bit disappointed with your last marriage but still want to start dating again? Do you really want to say goodbye to all lonely nights you?ll have if you do not start to act? The decision is up to you, single parent dating is actually not as difficult as someone may think. But here are indications which would help you to understand are you ready for another plunge or not.

Your dramatic experience must be completely buried in the past

This is the foremost: past should be left in the past, especially if the past wasn?t very happy. If you feel that something still drags you backwards try to throw it away or you?ll only do harm to that person with whom you?ll be hopelessly trying to build a family. To overcome bad thoughts first of all you have to accept them. If something disturbs you ? isolate it, think about it and try to solve the problem.

There must be a right reason for dating

You must have clear motives why you are interested in dating and new relationships. There are a lot of divorced who are looking for popular online dating only because friends, parents, the society tells them to do so. The pressure is really big, but it?s your life and it?s you who have to decide, because as you already know living together can be a big challenge at times.

Your child must approve your urge towards dating

It?s you who know that in a full-fledged family there must be a father and a mother, but altogether it?s not obligatory that your child understands it. Try to explain to your kid that a new person may help you to cope with different problems. Be honest and don?t, on any account, deceive your child.

You must understand that dating a single parent challenges your future life?s companion

It?s very important not to take for granted that the person who wants to build a dream marriage with you is doing his or her best despite the fact that you have kids. It?s really a big challenge and you have to appreciate it. Try to recognize all efforts your partner in life will do, it will strengthen your relationships. You have to be ready to be sensitive to the needs and feelings of your family members.

Do you have time for dating again?

Yes, it?s the final and the harshest question. Try to think about things you?ll be not able to do when you cast your lot with somebody. It?s really that serious, because being a single parent teaches you to use every minute profitably. Another person in your life would take a lot of time.

But still - lonely nights, lonely days, weeks, years, holidays and hard day?s evenings?maybe the price is right enough to safeguard yourself from the loneliness for good. Think about it and your heart will tell you the right answer. So single parent dating is your chan?e to make your life better!

Birmingham's Harris Early Learning Center donated to Auburn ...

AUBURN UNIVERSITY ? The Birmingham Urban Revitalization Partnership recently gifted the Harris Early Learning Center in Birmingham to Auburn University.

The gift, valued at $6.4 million, includes the building and contents, as well as an endowment for general maintenance. The Alabama Power Foundation will also continue its longtime support of the center.

"Auburn University now has a physical presence in downtown Birmingham from which our Extension and outreach mission can more effectively operate in one of the main population centers of the state," said Joe Pittman, head of the Department of Human Development and Family Studies in Auburn's College of Human Sciences.

"It will invigorate our research program that has been ongoing in the center since its inception. It will give more undergraduate and graduate interns from a variety of disciplines opportunities to observe or work with young children in a state-of-the-art facility, or, depending on the discipline of the participating student, it could provide ideas for how to design, operate or otherwise improve such facilities for the future."

Business and civic leaders who make up the partnership joined forces with Human Development and Family Studies faculty in 1994 to provide parents working in the downtown Birmingham area with a high-quality child care facility. Auburn faculty helped design the center, as well as create a curriculum to educate and foster developing social and practical skills. The center's two directors are Ph.D.-level faculty from the Department of Human Development and Family Studies.

Located in Birmingham's Civil Rights District, the Harris Early Learning Center opened Aug. 25, 1995, with 65 children. In two years, it was serving 200, ranging in age from six weeks to five years. The center continues to attract approximately 200 children each year, some of whom remain a part of the enrollment until they leave for kindergarten. It is estimated that more than 2,500 youngsters have been served by the center so far.

Besides serving as a state-of-the-art child care center, it offers on-site apartments for students and faculty who need accommodations for overnight or long-term stays while conducting research or completing internships. It also offers parenting workshops and training for teachers and directors of other Birmingham metro centers.

As a model program for early childhood development and education, the center has welcomed professionals from across the country and around the world to assess the viability of replication in their own communities. It also receives a number of college students from throughout Alabama each year for internships.

The Harris Early Learning Center is named for Elmer and Glenda Harris, an Auburn University couple and early childhood education advocates who led the effort to obtain corporate sponsorship to build the center.

Franchise Investment Support Increases Due to Loosened Credit and

SOUTHBURY, CT?(Marketwire ? Sep 26, 2012) ? With more and more people seeking business ownership options in this challenging job market, many players in the franchise industry are working hard to open the doors of opportunity to business ownership ? ensuring that those aspiring entrepreneurs can become franchise investors.??We?re seeing positive trends both in lending and education,? says Brian Miller, COO of TES Franchising LLC.?

?First, industry associations like the International Franchise Association (IFA) are aggressively educating the lending community on the powerful investment opportunity franchising offers,? says Miller.??The key message here is that it is oftentimes safer for lenders to consider franchise investments because they?re backed by a proven system of support.?

Secondly, aspiring business owners interested in learning about franchising can reach out to very credible resources of education, such as a franchise business coach, to help them identify whether business ownership is right for them and to help them understand the financing options available.

Franchise business coaches with TES work directly with strategic business partner Guidant Financial.?Both TES and Guidant share a common vision of how to help new and passionate business owners get the financing they need.?TES coaches help prospective entrepreneurs seek out financing early in the process of opening a new business to get a perspective on what is available and what they can afford.

Along with helping people identify financing options, TES coaches also offer guidance and training on franchising and business opportunities, taking clients through a ?discovery process? to identify their income, lifestyle, wealth and equity goals.?Clients are then presented with business concepts to explore how those complement their goals, needs and expectations.

?The financing environment is not as cumbersome as it has been in the past five years,? says David Nilssen, co-founder and CEO of Guidant Financial.??Credit has become more accessible in the last 12 months and we are finding great success through unsecured loans and the Small Business Administration (SBA) loan programs.?

?Understanding the financing options for aspiring business owners makes business ownership an even more viable option for people in career transition,? said Miller.??And it?s been our experience that lending institutions can be even more open to provide funding for a franchise.?

?We believe the best franchise buyers understand their options and can make an informed decision. We work diligently with TES business coaches and invest considerable time with franchise seekers to educate them about their options,? says Nilssen.??Many clients have the ability to capitalize their businesses.?They simply need to understand what their options are, and explore creative ways to obtain funds.?

Iconic Israeli newspaper of the verge of collapse

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Throughout much of Israel's history, the Maariv daily was known as the "country's paper," the newspaper with the highest circulation and a cornerstone of Israeli media. Now it is on its last legs ? the victim, some say, of a Jewish-American billionaire who is a close friend of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Casino mogul Sheldon Adelson launched his free "Israel Hayom" or "Israel Today" daily five years ago. The tabloid has steadily gobbled up market share since then. Handed out by ubiquitous distributors clad in red overalls at busy intersections, it has become the most read newspaper in Israel.

The 64-year-old Maariv has suffered in the fallout. The newspaper was sold this month by its cash-strapped owner to a rival publisher. Most of its 2,000 employees are facing likely dismissals.

The iconic newspaper has been hemorrhaging money for years and its downfall is linked to the struggles facing print media around the globe, with the emergence of online news sources and a steep drop in subscribers and ad revenue rendering the traditional newspaper economic model untenable.

But against the backdrop of a perceived anti-media blitz by the hard-line government, Maariv staffers believe their final blow was delivered by Israel Hayom.

Adelson's paper recently passed Yediot Ahronot as the top-read daily in Israel, leaving Maariv in third place, according to a survey by TGI, a leading Israeli polling company.

Besides its flattering coverage of Netanyahu and questionable political agenda, critics charge that its cheap ads and deep pockets are running everyone else out of business.

"We can't compete with a machine that prints money and hands out papers for free," said Avi Ashkenazi, Maariv's veteran crime correspondent. "We are the first ones to enter the slaughterhouse but we likely won't be the last. It's only a matter of time."

Israel Hayom's success has raised questions about whether a wealthy foreigner has bought power and influence on behalf of the prime minister. Adelson also has contributed $30 million to super PACs supporting Republican candidates and has attended major fundraising events for U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Israel Hayom denies the accusations and says its economic model is simply more effective.

"(We) won't apologize for our success, the readers prefer us and we thank them," the paper said in a statement.

The loss of Maariv would leave Israel, a country of nearly 8 million people, with three national Hebrew newspapers: Adelson's Israel Hayom, Yediot and Haaretz, a small but influential publication popular with Israel's dovish elite. A number of smaller niche publications, including the English-language Jerusalem Post, also exist.

Other newspapers have announced layoffs and popular TV station Channel 10 is struggling to stay on the air as it awaits a request to the state to defer its crippling debts. The station says the government, which has deferred debts for other struggling companies, is using a technicality to eliminate a pesky source of criticism.

Critics also charge the government of making political appointments to Israel's public broadcasting system, sidelining prominent critics on state radio and passing anti-libel legislation meant to stifle investigative reporters.

Comments by Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz, a Netanyahu confidant from his hawkish Likud Party, captured on tape at a recent party function highlight the animosity.

"We are dealing here ... with a media that is not only against the Likud ? it is true, it mostly prefers the left and is not entirely objective ? but beyond that it is a media that has lost respect for one small, simple word ? the truth," he told a group of Likud activists.

Ben Caspit, Maariv's leading political columnist, has written that Maariv's blood is on Netanyahu's hands.

"The man who wanted to go down in history as the man who destroyed the Iranian nuclear threat could go down as the one who destroyed the free media in his country," he wrote.

In his first comments on the issue, Netanyahu told the Israeli economic paper Globes that Maariv's plight was due to the "dramatic technological changes that are affecting the written press" all over the world. He said he has no intention of getting involved.

"On the one hand I'm told 'leave the media alone,' and on the other hand I'm told 'intervene to save this outlet or another.' There's a contradiction here," he said.

Dalia Dorner, a former Supreme Court Justice who is president of the Israel Press Council, said that in France, for instance, the government intervenes with subsidies and encourages youths to read newspapers. But in the hostile Israeli climate it is unlikely the government will lend a helping hand to the struggling industry.

"I hope something can be done. For there to be good journalism, we need journalists," Dorner said. "For there to be democracy, we need a free and varied media."

Israeli businessman Nochi Dankner, whose IDB holding company is wobbling under a pile of debt, this month sold Maariv to Shlomo Ben-Tzvi, the publisher of a hard-line religious publication, for $21 million.

Ben-Tzvi has indicated he will fire all 2,000 employees and rehire between 300 and 400. It's not clear whether he will incorporate them into his Makor Rishon daily or keep Maariv alive in a limited capacity.

On Sunday, a Tel Aviv district court handed Maariv a temporary lifeline, appointing two trustees who will try to revive the paper and ensure employees' rights. The court cited a "heavy public interest in saving Maariv" and froze the transfer of ownership for a month.

Maariv editor-in-chief Nir Hefetz made a front page plea the following day asking the government and advertisers to help and for everyday Israelis to purchase subscriptions.

"If everyone contributes their part, if everyone joins the effort, together we can save Maariv," he wrote.

Hagai Matar, head of the Maariv journalist's union, said that just as the government has assisted struggling factories, it should do the same to save the newspaper. "Only massive public pressure will convince the government that it is a public interest to save Maariv," he said.

Matar is leading the battle to keep the paper alive and lobbying hard for adequate severance and pension if he and others are sent home.

Last week, he led about 1,000 people through the streets of Tel Aviv, blocking a major junction. Following the court order, the union dropped its threat to strike, which would have stopped publication Tuesday for the first time ever.

Established in 1948 three months before Israel gained independence, Maariv prided itself as a beacon of quality journalism and beholden neither to political parties nor media moguls. It was the nation's No. 1 paper until it was overtaken by Yediot in the 1970s.

The newspaper has evolved from broadsheet to tabloid and its ownership has passed hands among a series of wealthy businessmen, including the late British media mogul Robert Maxwell.

Yuval Karniel, a law and communications expert at the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya, a college near Tel Aviv said Maariv's near-collapse reflected the evolution of Israeli society.

"Maariv has declined along with its readers. When we look at Maariv, we look at ourselves ... it is an Israeli story," he said.

Construction Marketing Ideas: Referrals, repeat business, speeches ...

In this weekly Google Plus Hangout (Friday 2 pm), I discuss how and when you should advertise. ?If you think that someone who earns 97 per cent of his income from advertising would urge you to pay for advertising in our (or any) media, you will experience a surprise. ?I suggest that advertising should be carefully considered and only used after you've fully accessed the "low hanging marketing fruit" of systematized repeat and referral programs, and effective public speaking and presentation initiatives.

When you are ready to advertise, you should also be aware that the cost-per-lead will (short term) be much higher than through the repeat/referral and public speaking options and you should be careful not to put all your eggs in one basket. ?If you have a $2,000 marketing budget and use it all on one advertisement, you are likely to be extremely disappointed in the results.

Conversely, at a crucial stage in your business growth, you can experience a quantum jump in the amount you should spend on advertising, and the results you can expect to achieve. ?This is because if you can afford enough advertising to be extremely visible to your potential clients, you'll benefit from the synergy of your advertising. ?As well, while the acquisition costs of advertising-based leads are high, their lifetime value -- and their ability to generate repeat and referral business -- can also help your business.

Please feel free to join me at the 2 p.m. video broadcast/hangout. ?You can find information about how to register for a Google Plus account to gain access in the sidebar at constructionmarketingideas.com, or you can email me at buckshon@constructionmarketingideas.com.

That's right: last weekend Poland won the Euro Championship!

OK, so it was the Euro T20 (cricket) championship and not all the teams from Europe were there, and not many of the Poland team are from Europe, but Poland kicked the arses of Russia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Hungary and finally Romania to win the eight-nation championship! Considering that they were expected to finish dead last, this is a stunning achievement for Polish cricket. Kacsmar: Can't laugh at NFC West anymore

The 49ers, Cardinals, Seahawks and Rams are hot ... but are they for real?

ANALYSIS

By Scott Kacsmar

updated 2:18 p.m. ET Sept. 18, 2012

Since the NFL aligned teams into eight divisions in 2002, no division has come under more ridicule than the NFC West.

We have witnessed the decline of the San Francisco 49ers (2003-2010), the rise and fall of the Seattle Seahawks, the most embarrassing five-year stretch in modern NFL history by the St. Louis Rams (2007-2011), and a lot of forgetful action with the Arizona Cardinals outside of that brief window with Kurt Warner at quarterback.

Sure, the 2005 Seahawks and 2008 Cardinals reached the Super Bowl, only to be vanquished by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Even though the 2010 Seahawks were just 7-9, they won the division and even knocked the defending champion New Orleans Saints out of the playoffs.

But that is what the division has been known for. Unexpected playoff runs and a lot of losing. Throw in the supposed ?East Coast bias?, and you have a division that receives little respect from the media.

That may be changing soon. On Sunday, all four NFC West teams won for only the second time since 2002 , and they each beat an opponent that was 1-0. That includes what could be the upset of the year with the Arizona Cardinals beating the Patriots 20-18 in New England.

What has caused the turnaround, and is it real enough to sustain itself?

San Francisco 49ers
The class of the NFC West may just be the class of the NFC and beyond in 2012 if the first two weeks are any indication. After languishing through eight seasons without a winning record, the San Francisco 49ers finally returned to prominence last season behind their rookie head coach and late-blooming quarterback.

Having built a strong talent core with Frank Gore, Vernon Davis, Michael Crabtree and an offensive line full of high draft picks, the 49ers just needed consistent quarterback play.

Enter a former NFL quarterback in Jim Harbaugh as head coach, and let him provide stability for Alex Smith, the No. 1 overall pick in 2005 who has gone through more offensive coordinators than Terrell Owens has professional teams.

The 49ers play a bit conservative offensively in today?s spread-out, pass-happy era, but they can get away with taking sacks and kicking field goals at record rates because they have one of the league?s best defenses built with smart draft picks and transactions to get players like Patrick Willis, Justin Smith, NaVorro Bowman, Dashon Goldson, and Carlos Rogers.

Harbaugh took over a 6-10 team and has turned them into a statistical juggernaut in many ways. Last season the 49ers tied the NFL record for the fewest turnovers in a season (10). ?Smith is still riding a streak of 216 passes without an interception. San Francisco also had the most takeaways (38) to make for an incredible +28 turnover differential.

Thanks to the turnover mastery and special teams, San Francisco dominated field position on both sides of the ball. They set the NFL record for highest net punting average in a season (44.0) behind Andy Lee. David Akers set NFL records with 44 field goals and 52 field goal attempts.

Maybe the most incredible number for Harbaugh?s 49ers is zero: the number of games (including playoffs) in which San Francisco has failed to have at least a fourth-quarter tie.

They have had an outright lead in the fourth quarter in 19 of 20 games (16-3 record). The only time they did not was on Thanksgiving in Baltimore against John Harbaugh?s team. That final quarter started with a 6-6 tie before the Ravens pulled away.

Still, going 20 games in this league (16-4 record) without one poor performance where the other team just pulls away early is impressive. It is even more impressive when they are the first 20 games of your NFL coaching career.

After adding more talent at wide receiver and returning most of last year?s starters, the 49ers look to get even better this season and have had impressive eight-point wins over Green Bay and Detroit so far.

Smith is still just 28 years old, so there is no reason he cannot continue to improve. He is an excellent fit for how the 49ers play. Thought to be holding the team back, he can now become an asset as they look towards returning to the Super Bowl.

The window is wide open for this team.

Arizona Cardinals
When Arizona beat New England on Sunday, they tied the Patriots with a 9-2 record in their last 11 regular season games. That?s right. Their record has been just as good as New England?s, and they even have the head-to-head tie-breaker.

Of course, the Cardinals have been riding an odyssey of close wins in the process. Their last eight games have each been decided by no more than seven points. Last season Arizona tied a NFL record with eight wins in a season as a result of a game-winning score in the fourth quarter or overtime. They tied the NFL record with four overtime wins.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt has done this with the often injured, often inconsistent duo of Kevin Kolb and John Skelton at quarterback, with the only given being Larry Fitzgerald is going to catch a lot of passes. Except for Sunday in New England, when Fitzgerald had just one reception for four yards. The Cardinals still won 20-18.

Consider the Cardinals the NFC version of the 2011 Denver Broncos. There is no Tim Tebow, but there is John Skelton, who incredibly has an 8-1 record in his opportunities for a win in the fourth quarter or overtime. That is better than Tebow (7-4), and Skelton?s wild passing surges late in games after dreadful starts are just as hard to fathom.

Skelton?s injured now, and Kolb has stepped in well the last two weeks to secure this unpredictable 2-0 start. After such a horrid offseason performance, the Cardinals have done just enough on offense while the defense has carried the team.

Patrick Peterson is a better return man than a young cover corner, but he is solid enough in a secondary with safeties Adrian Wilson and Kerry Rhodes. Darnell Dockett and Calais Campbell lead the defensive line and have only yielded 34 points to teams who scored 61 points in Week 1.

There is a big test with Philadelphia this week, but if Arizona can get past that, it is not impossible for a 7-0 start before hosting San Francisco on October 29th. Yes, I really did just say the Cardinals could start 7-0, which would make them 14-2 in their last ?season? of games. Of course they may not win another game in their schedule?s back nine, but 2-0 is already putting them two games ahead of most pundits? predictions.

Arizona will have to find a way to play better early in games, as hanging on for dear life at the end will backfire eventually. New England just needed a 42-yard field goal on Sunday, and under Bill Belichick (since 2000), their kickers had been 29 out of 31 (93.5 percent) at clutch kicks. This time it was wide left.

The next time it may be good, which is why the Cardinals need more from their overpaid quarterback and pair of highly-drafted running backs.
