8 Ways to Protect Your Home Against Tornadoes and Hurricanes

This story initially appeared in June 2011. We're reposting in response to the devastating tornadoes that struck Moore, Okla., yesterday. These kinds of building techniques may not have saved all those caught in the path of the monster Moore tornado, but hundreds of twisters hit the United States every year, and smart building strategies and tech can reduce the damage from the great many of those.

This year has blown away the annual average for deadly tornadoes in the U.S. (28) with a barrage that numbers 50 and counting. This April was the worst tornado month on record, and storms throughout the year have ripped through Alabama, Massachusetts, Missouri and elsewhere. And now, as tornado season winds down, the late-summer hurricane season is about to begin.

Ernst Kiesling, professor of civil engineering at Texas Tech University, says there's not much you could do if a tornado scoring a 5 on the EF (enhanced Fujita) scale bears down on your home (and in the case of tornadoes, with their smaller path of destruction, many people would rather gamble with fate than invest in armoring their homes with costly technologies). But if you want to try to brace your home against the howling winds of twisters or hurricanes, there is a spectrum of technologies available, from roof clips and window shutters at the more inexpensive end to reinforcements for doors and walls at the high end. And if you do nothing to safeguard your home, Kiesling says, at the very least, protect your family with an in-home safe room or underground shelter.

What 'Star Wars: Episode VII' Needs: Malakili

By Ryan Rigley Seems like we here at MTV News aren't the only ones speculating about what to expect from the upcoming "Star Wars" trilogy. Last Wednesday, on Jimmy Kimmel Live, "Star Wars" fans were given the opportunity to give the "Star Trek Into Darkness" director (J. J. Abrams) a few suggestions of their own. [...]

(AP) ? All eyes will be on Kentucky Derby winner Orb in the Preakness Stakes on Saturday. The 3-year-old colt will take on eight challengers in the second leg of the Triple Crown. If he wins, Orb will attempt to become the first Triple Crown champion since Affirmed in 1978 at the Belmont Stakes on June 8. In the Preakness, Orb will be facing five horses he defeated in the Derby and three who did not run in the race.

Here's a guide to watching the race:

___

? INSIDE START. Orb will start from the inside, No. 1 gate. If this was the Kentucky Derby that could be a major problem because there would be more of a chance of getting squeezed back in the pack. The Derby field was 19; the Preakness is nine, with a longer run to the first turn than at Churchill Downs. However, since 1961 only one horse ? Tabasco Cat in 1994 ? has won from the No. 1 post.

? FIRST TURN. By the first turn, we'll know whether Orb, under jockey Joel Rosario, has established clear-running position. The question is how far back he'll settle. In the Derby, with its much larger field, Orb dropped 18 lengths off the pace. Look for him to be much closer as Govenor Charlie, Goldencents, Itsmyluckyday and Titletown Five vie for the early lead.

? BACKSTRETCH: Around the turn and into the backstretch, Orb should find a comfortable groove as the field sorts into clusters: speed horses, midpack runners and closers. If the early pace is fast, Orb could be farther back; if it's slow, he could be in the middle.

? FINAL TURN: Heading into the final turn is when Orb should be making his move. In the Derby, Rosario waited patiently to make the call and when he did, Orb went from 16th to the lead in the final half-mile and won by 2? lengths.

? HEADED FOR HOME: The stretch run is anyone's guess, but if all goes according to form, Orb should be in the mix to win no matter what the pace. Among proven closers in the field are Mylute, Departing and Will Take Charge. If the sloppy track was the reason both Goldencents and Itsmyluckday ran so poorly, then either or both could rebound with a big race and prove hard to catch in the lane.

Nine-year-old Mars rover passes 40-year-old record

May 17, 2013 ? While Apollo 17 astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt visited Earth's moon for three days in December 1972, they drove their mission's Lunar Roving Vehicle 19.3 nautical miles (22.210 statute miles or 35.744 kilometers). That was the farthest total distance for any NASA vehicle driving on a world other than Earth until yesterday.

The team operating NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity received confirmation in a transmission from Mars today that the rover drove 263 feet (80 meters) on Thursday, bringing Opportunity's total odometry since landing on Mars in January 2004 to 22.220 statute miles (35.760 kilometers).

Cernan discussed this prospect a few days ago with Opportunity team member Jim Rice of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. The Apollo 17 astronaut said, "The record we established with a roving vehicle was made to be broken, and I'm excited and proud to be able to pass the torch to Opportunity."

The international record for driving distance on another world is still held by the Soviet Union's remote-controlled Lunokhod 2 rover, which traveled 23 miles (37 kilometers) on the surface of Earth's moon in 1973.

Opportunity began a multi-week trek this week from an area where it has been working since mid-2011, the "Cape York" segment of the rim of Endeavour Crater, to an area about 1.4 miles (2.2 kilometers) away, "Solander Point."

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Mars Exploration Rover Project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. JPL also manages the Mars Science Laboratory Project and its rover, Curiosity, which landed on Mars in August 2012.

Two girls abducted in Albuquerque in a week; police hunt person of interest

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

Albuquerque police were hunting for a 31-year-old man Thursday after two young girls were abducted from the same apartment complex within a week.

David Jesus Hernandez was described as a person of interest wanted for questioning in Wednesday's child-snatching, which ended when the mother of the 4-year-old victim chased the kidnapper with her car.

Police said they were investigating a "possible connection" between that incident and one last week in which a 6-year-old girl was kidnapped, driven away in a car and sexually assaulted.

Hernandez has not been charged with a crime but police asked for the public's help in finding him.

In the latest incident, the little girl was playing in her yard in the early evening when a man forced her into a silver Buick. As he took off, some teenagers hanging around outside ran inside and alerted the child's mother, police said.

As she jumped in her own car to chase the Buick, the suspect pushed the little girl out of his vehicle. The mother didn't notice and kept going after the man.

"She was involved in a high-speed pursuit," Police Chief Ray Schultz said.

After tearing down several streets, the mother rammed the Buick several times to get it to stop, cops said. The driver jumped out and fled on foot.

"This appears to be a complete stranger abduction," Schultz said.

The 4-year-old was not harmed and was found wandering near the apartment complex.

In last week's incident, a silver or gray car was also used.

World's biggest ice sheets likely more stable than previously believed

May 16, 2013 ? For decades, scientists have used ancient shorelines to predict the stability of today's largest ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica. Markings of a high shoreline from three million years ago, for example -- when Earth was going through a warm period -- were thought to be evidence of a high sea level due to ice sheet collapse at that time. This assumption has led many scientists to think that if the world's largest ice sheets collapsed in the past, then they may do just the same in our modern, progressively warming world.

However, a new groundbreaking study now challenges this thinking.

Using the east coast of the United States as their laboratory, a research team led by David Rowley, CIFAR Senior Fellow and professor at the University of Chicago, has found that Earth's hot mantle pushed up segments of ancient shorelines over millions of years, making them appear higher now than they originally were millions of years ago.

"Our findings suggest that the previous connections scientists made between ancient shoreline height and ice volumes are erroneous and that perhaps our ice sheets were more stable in the past than we originally thought," says Rowley. "Our study is telling scientists that they can no longer ignore the effect of Earth's interior dynamics when predicting historic sea levels and ice volumes."

The study, published online in Science on May 16, was a collaboration that included CIFAR Senior Fellows Alessandro Forte (Universit? du Qu?bec ? Montr?al) and Jerry Mitrovica (Harvard), and a former CIFAR-supported post-doctoral fellow Rob Moucha (Syracuse).

"This study was the culmination of years of work and deep collaboration by researchers in CIFAR's program in Earth System Evolution," explains Rowley. "For this study, each of us brought our individual expertise to the table: Rob and Alex worked on simulations of Earth's mantle dynamics, Jerry provided calculations on how glaciers warp Earth's surface, and I shaped our understanding of the geology of the landscape we were looking at. This study would not have been possible without CIFAR."

The team studied the coast from Virginia to Florida, which has an ancient scarp tens of metres above present-day sea level. Until now, many research groups have studied this shoreline and concluded that during a warm period three million years ago, the Greenland, West Antarctic and a fraction of East Antarctic ice sheets collapsed, raising the sea level at least 35 metres. But the new findings by Rowley and his team suggest that these ice sheets, particularly the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (the world's largest), were probably more stable.

To do their study, the team used computer simulations to follow the movement of mantle and tectonic plates that occurred over time. Their prediction of how the ancient shoreline would have developed over millions of years matched what geologists mapping this ancient coast have observed. The next steps for the team are to try to make accurate predictions in other locations around the world.

"The paper is important because it shows that no prediction of ancient ice volumes can ever again ignore the Earth's interior dynamics," explains Rowley. "It also provides a novel bridge between two disciplines in Earth science that rarely intersect: mantle dynamics and long-term climate. It is the kind of study that changes how people think about our past climate and what our future holds."

Major Union Calls Tech Industry ?Greedy? For Wanting To End Hiring Wait Period For Immigrants

074985183X?The tech industry is, frankly, being greedy. They are going back and asking for changes to language they helped write and blatantly trying to roll back requirements that give high-skilled American workers a fair shot at getting a job,” said AFL-CIO legislative Representative Andrea Zuniga DiBitetto about new proposals to ease the hiring of high-skilled foreign workers. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg reportedly called Senator Orin Hatch to push more tech-friendly changes to the comprehensive immigration reform bill. Among Hatch’s most contentious suggestions is an end to a 90-day wait period before companies can solicit applicants with a foreign work visa. According to Reuters, under Hatch’s amendment, employers would only have to make a good-faith effort to hire Americans. While, conceptually, comprehensive immigration reform has strong bi-partisan support, its passage is far from certain. Reuters could not report whether unions would support the bill, should Hatch’s changes go through. Many unions have been long-time opponents of high-skilled immigration reform. Most recently, the union-backed Economic Policy Institute?published (and criticized) a study on why the need for high-skilled immigrants was a myth. Should the unions lose this latest battle in the Senate, it will demonstrate their decline relative to the tech industry.

Disney: Sexy 'Brave' makeover just temporary

Movies

Image: Merida from the film "Brave"

A Mighty Girl

Merida, left, dressed to impress, and from the film.

It?s the before-and-after makeover heard around the world.

When Princess Merida of ?Brave? was crowned the 11th princess at Walt Disney World this weekend, she had a new look that included not only a tiny waist, sultry eyes, and cleavage but also the teal gown that the feisty tomboy so detested in the Oscar-winning movie. It was as if Merida stepped onto the cover of ?Vogue? magazine and her rebellious spirit was photo-shopped right out of the red-headed heroine.

Nearly 212,000 of her fans weren?t having it. Through a Change.org petition, ?Keep Merida Brave,? girl empowerment blog ?A Mighty Girl,? demanded that Disney reconsider the redesign. By Wednesday, word had spread on the Internet that Disney had removed the sexified image from its official princess website, and the movement declared itself victorious.

But much of it has turned out to be as fictitious as the bow-and-arrow-carrying princess herself. The party girl image of Merida was never used on Disney?s official sites or Facebook pages, a Disney spokesperson told NBCNews.com Thursday.

?The artwork used on Merida?s official social media sites has always been the imagery from the movie ? there have been no changes," a Disney spokesperson said in a statement. "We routinely use different art styles with our characters and this rendition of Merida in her party dress was a special one-time effort to commemorate her coronation. Merida exemplifies what it means to be a Disney Princess through being brave, passionate and confident and she remains the same strong and determined Merida from the movie whose inner qualities have inspired moms and daughters around the world. ?

Merida?s new look was created for her "special coronation" and is intended to be used in a limited product line this summer and fall. Her image on her official princess page will remain intact, the spokesperson said.

?For a wedding or prom, even a tomboy is going to dress up for a special occasion,? a source familiar with the product line said, describing the idea behind Merida?s newfound glamour. ?That doesn?t change who she is or who she will continue to be or who she remains on the Disney web sites or in most of the products.?

Disney typically creates multiple artwork for each character to use in different platforms for different reasons. But the main look is always the look that everyone knows, the source said.

?It?s not like you walk into the toy aisle and Merida?s flipped over completely to this new look,? the source said. ?This was a one-time special occasion effort.?

Still, the backlash against Merida?s transformation is understandable considering that she was created as an ?anti-princess? of sorts, a tough and feisty warrior resistant to conventional beauty. Creator Brenda Chapman modeled Merida after her own teenage daughter and wants her to be representative of all teenage girls.

?Merida wouldn?t be caught dead looking like that and I think that?s what?s angering everyone,? Chapman told CNN. They?ve totally lost sight of the character in this new design. I understand, with the toys, that they don?t want to put in a lot more money creating a new body for the dolls. But this is a drawing that?s going to be put on tons of merchandise and it doesn?t cost that much money to put a lot of effort into a drawing that portrays the character as who the character is--as opposed to this grotesque, sexist depiction of her.?

The petition also decries the way Disney has introduced Merida into the Princess collection and calls it a "disservice to the millions of children for whom Merida is an empwering role model who speaks to girls' capacity to be change agents in the world rather than just trophies to be admired."

Here We Go: Building Booming and Home Prices Rising

In the first quarter of 2013 our economy grew by 2.5 percent. While some were disappointed with that figure because it fell short of the consensus estimate of 3.0 percent, it's still a sign of better times, according to Corelogic.com.

The company recently released "The MarketPulse" which highlighted the following: economic recovery is benefitting from residential investment, "census division of price declines in the housing collapse varied dramatically by depth and duration, and the census divisions with the largest declines have the fastest current recoveries."

There are four census divisions in the United States. These geographical regions contain two or three census divisions for a total of nine. How these areas were impacted and how they are recovering depends on various factors such as the development of new housing.

Build it and they will come. The new housing industry is growing stronger and helping boost the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Homebuyers seeking new homes are encouraging this growth.

At the lowest point, new home sales dropped to 273,000 annualized sales in February 2011, marking the lowest sales rate in almost 50 years. The highest peak reached 1.4 million annualized sales in July 2005 and today it's increasing 19 percent from a year ago, according to the U.S. Census Bureau data from March 2013.

Meanwhile, residential home prices are continuing to rise. However, the increase in home prices isn't uniform across the country. Instead, the recovery is geographically confined to areas that are "either recovering from the boom-bust cycle, or exhibiting strong economic fundamentals and strengthening demographic demand," according to Corelogic.

The increase in housing prices is also happening in areas where building is booming.

New housing competes with foreclosures and short sales. These latter two groups are now experiencing a decline, making new housing a good solution for some buyers.

Mortgages categorized as seriously delinquent (90 days or more past due) peaked nationally at 3.7 million in January 2010. The figure has recently dropped by 33 percent to 1.2 million.

Corelogic reported that there were 55,000 completed foreclosures through March 2013, which is a decrease of 16 percent compared with the number of the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the summer sizzle season is arriving soon and analysts expect another possible increase in sales and prices which could encourage more sellers to list their homes for sale

If you're interested in buying, here are a few tips. Act now. Start putting your finances in order so you know what you can actually afford to purchase. Delaying this could mean the loss of your favorite home to a better prepared borrower.

Meet with experts to get the best information and advice about the real estate market you're interested in. While real estate information is available on line from anywhere in the world, prices vary greatly depending on the local market. Your best bet is to find an expert in the area you're interested in to assist you with your questions and guide you through your search.

Remember that many sellers are still in a recovery mode. They may just now be adjusting to no longer having their home mortgage "under water". So, when you find a home you're interested in, act quickly to engage negotiation about the final sales price.

Also, keep in mind that the housing inventory is likely to increase as housing prices continue to rise. However, many experts predict the shortage of existing homes for sale is likely to remain a problem throughout the rest of 2013.

96% War Witch

All Critics (48) | Top Critics (16) | Fresh (46) | Rotten (2)

Canadian writer-director Kim Nguyen spent nearly a decade researching this docudrama about child soldiers in Africa, and the film feels as authoritative as a first-hand account.

A haunting take on unspeakably grim subject matter, shot on location in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A powerful and upsetting portrait of a young girl compelled into unimaginably horrific circumstances.

Nguyen, astonishingly, manages to wring something vaguely like a happy ending from this tragic story.

War Witch is most effective not when we are looking in on Komona but when we are inside her head.

The powerful things we expect from "War Witch" are as advertised, but what we don't expect is even better.

... driven by a remarkably natural, unaffected performance by Mwanza. And Nguyen, despite relying a little too heavily on the initial voice-over for exposition, is a confident and sensitive intelligence behind the camera.

You're likely to ponder its images, its insights into a very foreign (for most of us) location and the tragic situation of Komona (and others like her) for a long time to come.

Is it accurate depiction of Africa's child soldiers? I don't know, thank God. But it feels authentic to its very core, and that makes it as hard to forget as it is to ignore.

Brutal without turning exploitative, the result is harrowing and heartbreaking.

Nguyen creates a mesmerizing tone through his camerawork, editing, sound and the infusion of African folk imagery and ritual, but it's Mwanza's performance as Komona that makes "War Witch" feel so miraculous.

Nguyen reportedly worked on "War Witch" for a decade, and it shows in both the immediacy and authenticity of his tale, and the meticulous craft with which it's told.

Made with extremely clear-eyed restraint from harangues, sentiment, message-mongering, or anything else that would cheapen its central character's suffering and fight.

War Witch features a standout performance by Rachel Mwanza, but the supernatural visions don't really suit the film's tone and mood.

Nguyen's compassion and commitment to the issue is admirable, and at its best, War Witch is devastating.

War Witch is remarkable for the fact that it never strays into sentimentality or sensationalism.

...a love story between youngsters who are forced to become adults all too early in their lives.

This is a straight ahead essay on warfare at its worst and the survival of the human spirit at its best.

An astonishing drama set in Africa that vividly depicts the courage and resiliency of a 12-year-old girl whose spiritual gifts enable her to survive.

It is astonishing that film that contains such violence can have such a serene tone. The source of the serenity is the measured, calm narration by Komona (voice of Diane Umawahoro) that is the telling of her story to her unborn child

An exquisitely made film in direct contrast to the ugliness of its subject matter

Kenyans Release Bloody Sows In 'Greedy Pigs' Protest To Denounce Parliament Pay Raise Proposal (PHOTOS)

NAIROBI, Kenya -- Nearly three dozen piglets were released and animal blood spilled Tuesday at an entrance to Kenya's parliament as civil society activists protested what they called parliament's greedy salary demands.

Police fired tear gas and water cannons and swung their batons to disperse the protesters, who gathered in what was dubbed the "Occupy Parliament" protest.

About 250 people carrying placards and banners marched through Nairobi's city center and staged a sit-in at the legislators' entrance to parliament.

"Don't like the pay? Quit!" one of the placards read. Demonstrators repeatedly shouted "thieves."

Civil activist Boniface Mwangi, one of the protest organizers, told an Associated Press reporter from a police cell that he had been arrested with 15 others.

"Even if they arrest us today we will come back. We want a better future for our kids," said Mwangi.

Members of Parliament are commonly called MPs in Kenya but Mwangi and others refer to them as "MPigs."

That saying was painted on all of the piglets and one huge pig released into the city, an act of civil obedience that saw Kenyan police scurrying after the piglets, while other small pigs munched on parliamentary flower beds.

Many Kenyans see legislators as lazy and greedy in a country where hundreds of thousands live in slums. Legislators often argue that they need high salaries to give hand-outs to poor constituents for school fees and hospital bills.

Kenyan legislators want to reverse a government commission ruling that shrank their salaries from the equivalent of about $126,000 to $78,500. The members of parliament have threated to disband the commission.

The minimum wage in Nairobi is about $1,500 a year and many here live on even less, one of the rich-vs-poor facts of Kenyan life fueling the protesters' rage.

The decision to reduce the pay for legislators came after a public outcry as the previous parliament attempted to raise their salaries to $175,000 annually and award themselves a $110,000 bonus at the end of their terms.

The public anger culminated in a protest in January, when hundreds of demonstrators set fire to 221 coffins outside parliament's main entrance.

Mutahi Kimaru, a legislator representing Laikipia in central Kenya, whose car was blocked from entering parliament by the protesters shouting "thief," said the parliamentarians want their salaries increased because the cost of living in the capital is higher than the rest of the country.

Sarah Serem, who heads the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, said Monday that even the reduced government wages are not sustainable or affordable for Kenya. She said 1.6 percent of the country's population consumes 50 percent of the government revenue.

"We therefore strongly believe that under the prevailing circumstance of low revenue collection, natural disasters, the level of poverty where so many are earning below less than $1 a day, this is not the time for upward review of remuneration and benefits," Serem said.

She said Kenya's leaders should forgo personal interests in order to serve.

John Wamagata, 48, a protester carrying a severed pig head labeled "greed," said: "We want to show them what they have become!"

Wamagata said that the only issue legislators have talked about since their March 4 election is their pay.

Wamagata said with the new positions created under the new constitution such as 47 gubernatorial seats and their staff and 67 senatorial seats, the costs of government salaries will become unbearable if everyone demands more pay.

Trying to be happier works when listening to upbeat music

May 14, 2013 ? The song, "Get Happy," famously performed by Judy Garland, has encouraged people to improve their mood for decades. Recent research at the University of Missouri discovered that an individual can indeed successfully try to be happier, especially when cheery music aids the process. This research points to ways that people can actively improve their moods and corroborates earlier MU research.

"Our work provides support for what many people already do -- listen to music to improve their moods," said lead author Yuna Ferguson, who performed the study while she was an MU doctoral student in psychological science. "Although pursuing personal happiness may be thought of as a self-centered venture, research suggests that happiness relates to a higher probability of socially beneficial behavior, better physical health, higher income and greater relationship satisfaction."

In two studies by Ferguson, participants successfully improved their moods in the short term and boosted their overall happiness over a two week period. During the first study, participants improved their mood after being instructed to attempt to do so, but only if they listened to the upbeat music of Copland, as opposed to the more somber Stravinsky. Other participants, who simply listened to the music without attempting to change their mood, also didn't report a change in happiness. In the second study, participants reported higher levels of happiness after two weeks of lab sessions in which they listened to positive music while trying to feel happier, compared to control participants who only listened to music.

However, Ferguson noted that for people to put her research into practice, they must be wary of too much introspection into their mood or constantly asking, "Am I happy yet?"

"Rather than focusing on how much happiness they've gained and engaging in that kind of mental calculation, people could focus more on enjoying their experience of the journey towards happiness and not get hung up on the destination," said Ferguson.

Ferguson's work corroborated earlier findings by Ferguson's doctoral advisor and co-author of the current study, Kennon Sheldon, professor of psychological science in MU's College of Arts and Science.

"The Hedonic Adaptation Prevention model, developed in my earlier research, says that we can stay in the upper half of our 'set range' of potential happiness as long as we keep having positive experiences, and avoid wanting too much more than we have," said Sheldon. "Yuna's research suggests that we can intentionally seek to make mental changes leading to new positive experiences of life. The fact that we're aware we're doing this, has no detrimental effect."

This New Form of CPR Can Really Bring the Dead Back to Life

A new mechanical CPR technique being tested in Australia is being credited with saving the lives of three people who were clinically dead for more than 40 minutes. The technique uses two machines: One, called an AutoPulse, keeps up a constant stream of compressions (far stronger and more consistent than a human can), while the second, a portable heart-lung machine,?pumps blood to the vital organs and brains. The machines are?giving doctors more time to address the root cause of a heart attack and still bring patients back with minimal damage.

The trials has been tested on seven cardiac arrest patients, three of whom were saved after being techincally "dead" for nearly an hour. One man, 39-year-old Colin Fielder, was brought back to life last summer, and all three suffered no permanent disability.?

Only?three ambulances in the whole country have access to the AutoPulse, and just one hospital had all the necessary?equipment?on site to peform the trial. After the successes they've had at The Alfred Hospital in Victoria, doctors hope to expand the program.

Using clay to grow bone

Wednesday, May 15, 2013

In new research published online May 13, 2013 in Advanced Materials, researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) are the first to report that synthetic silicate nanoplatelets (also known as layered clay) can induce stem cells to become bone cells without the need of additional bone-inducing factors. Synthetic silicates are made up of simple or complex salts of silicic acids, and have been used extensively for various commercial and industrial applications, such as food additives, glass and ceramic filler materials, and anti-caking agents.

Silicate nanoplatelets cause stem cells to become bone cells, as determined by the formation of bone matrix (in red). Image courtesy of Khademhosseini lab.

"With an aging population in the US, injuries and degenerative conditions are subsequently on the rise," said Ali Khademhosseini, PhD, BWH Division of Biomedical Engineering, senior study author. "As a result, there is an increased demand for therapies that can repair damaged tissues. In particular, there is a great need for new materials that can direct stem cell differentiation and facilitate functional tissue formation. Silicate nanoplatelets have the potential to address this need in medicine and biotechnology."

"Based on the strong preliminary studies, we believe that these highly bioactive nanoplatelets may be utilized to develop devices such as injectable tissue repair matrixes, bioactive fillers, or therapeutic agents for stimulating specific cellular responses in bone-related tissue engineering," said Akhilesh Gaharwar, PhD, BWH Division of Biomedical Engineering, first study author. "Future mechanistic studies will be performed to better understand underlying pathways that govern favorable responses, leading to a better understanding of how materials strategies can be leveraged to further improve construct performance and ultimately shorten patient recovery time."

Nokia announces Smart Camera app for the Lumia 925 (updated with hands-on video!)

Nokia announces Smart Camera app for the new Lumia 925

Here at the Nokia event in London, we've seen the Lumia 925 go from rumor to reality, and now we're hearing more about the camera software debuting on the handset. For starters, the app has improved low-light performance and noise reduction, and will burst capture at 5-megapixels, with the full 8.7-megapixels available in single-shooting mode. Sports shooters will get Action Shot, which combines several images for a slow-mo effect, and Best Shot will let you (or the camera) choose one of 10 frames that gives the best overall image. Motion focus will add a blur effect to the background while keeping moving objects in focus, with the option to adjust the level of blur later.

Burst shooting also gives the ability to selectively choose the most (or least) hammy expressions on your subjects and finally, there's an option that lets you delete moving objects that might be in the way of your subject, as shown above. Nokia announced that Smart Camera won't just be limited to the Lumia 925 either, as all of the Finnish company's Windows 8 Phone devices will get it through Nokia's Lumia Amber firmware update, arriving sometime this summer. If none of that works for you, there's always Hipstamatic, which was also just trumpeted for Windows Phone 8 at today's event.

Update: You can now see the Smart Cam in action in our hands-on video after the break. With skateboarding!

Stock market rally pauses on Monday

NEW YORK (AP) ? A record-breaking rally in stocks paused Monday as investors assessed whether the rise in stock valuations overstated the recent improvement in the economy.

The latest positive data, out Monday, showed that Americans increased spending at retailers last month. That suggests that consumers may boost economic growth in the current quarter ending June 30. Still, that wasn't enough to lift shares.

"What we have seen is a huge rally, and there aren't any stones unturned at this point," said Alec Young, global equity strategist at S&P Capital IQ. "You reach a point where investors aren't willing to bid things up any more."

Stocks have surged this year, boosted by an improving economy, Federal Reserve stimulus and record corporate earnings. Signs that the housing market is reviving are also supporting stocks. The Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard and Poor's 500 index both closed at record highs Friday.

Retail sales increased 0.1 percent in April from March, the Commerce Department said Monday. That's an improvement from the 0.5 percent decline in March, which was the largest drop in nine months. Economists had forecast that sales declined by 0.3 percent.

Consumer sentiment is improving as the housing market recovers, which is giving people the confidence to spend more, said Doug Cote, chief market strategist at ING Investment Management.

"If housing continues its upward trajectory, the animal spirits of the consumer will continue to be bolstered," said Cote.

On Monday, stocks started lower before paring some of those losses throughout the day.

The Dow fell 26.81 points, or 0.2 percent, to 15,091.68. The S&P 500 index was little changed at 1,633.77. The Dow is up 15.2 percent this year, and the S&P 500 is 14.6 percent higher.

Telecommunications companies dropped the most of any industry group in the S&P 500 index, falling 0.83 percent. Health care companies advanced the most, rising 0.7 percent.

Health care companies have risen 21.4 percent this year, the most of any of the 10 industry groups in the S&P 500. Investors have been buying the stocks because they offer some growth prospects and also pay large dividends.

More than 90 percent of companies in the S&P 500 have reported earnings for the first quarter, and corporate earnings are projected to grow by an average of 5 percent for the period, according to data from S&P Capital IQ. Earnings growth is projected to slow to 3.7 percent in the second quarter before climbing again in the second half of the year.

That strong earnings outlook for the end of the year means that stocks will likely end 2013 strongly, said Ron Sloan, a senior portfolio manager at Invesco. In the immediate future though, the direction of stocks is less certain, he said.

"The trick is what happens between here to there?" said Sloan. "I'm afraid that we are going to have to give back some of what we've made this year."

Among stocks making big moves:

? Yum Brands fell $1.44, or 2 percent, to $68.92 after the owner of Kentucky Fried Chicken reported that sales in China fell 29 percent last month, driven by concerns about Avian flu.

? Theravance, a biopharmaceutical company, surged $6.26, or 18 percent, to $41.20. Irish drugmaker Elan Corp. plans to pay $1 billion for the right to future royalties from respiratory treatments being developed by Theravance and GlaxoSmithKline.

? Autozone, a retailer of spare parts for cars, fell $5.19, or 1.2 percent, to $415.76 after Deutsche Bank cut its recommendation on the stock from "buy" to "hold."

In government bond trading, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 1.92 percent from 1.90 percent. The yield, which moves opposite to the price, has jumped this month as investors sold Treasurys and moved into riskier assets.

The Nasdaq composite rose 2.21 points, 0.1 percent, to 3,438.79.

Oil fell 87 cents, or 0.9 percent, to $95.17 a barrel. Gold dropped $2.30, or 0.2 percent, to $1,434.30 an ounce. The U.S. dollar was little changed against the Japanese yen at 101.83 and gained against the euro.

Burger built in lab costs $325,000 to produce, 'tastes reasonably good'

Burger built in lab costs $325,000 to produce, 'tastes reasonably good'

Dr. Mark Post of the University of Maastricht has carefully cultivated the most expensive burger you will probably never eat. Using stem cells and the science of tissue engineering, Post and his team have developed a method for creating an edible product called in-Vitro meat, which they hope to present in burger form at a special event in London next month. Despite the burger's artificial origins, Post claims it "tastes reasonably good."

The in-Vitro burger was designed as a proof-of-concept to address the problem of a growing global population with a rapidly dwindling food supply. Even so, it's unlikely that lab-grown meat will be as widely available as White Castle anytime soon since creating it is an expensive, time-consuming process -- a single burger costs about $325,000 to produce. Each pricey patty begins its life as cells sourced from the necks of slaughterhouse cows, which are then developed in a growth serum comprised of fetal calf stem cells. After three weeks, those cells divide into a strip of meat, about half an inch long. Combine about 20,000 of those tissue strips and you've got yourself a burger. If that doesn't get your taste buds tingling, we don't know what will.
