Mississippi Abortion Clinic Gets License Warning

JACKSON, Miss. -- Mississippi's only abortion clinic said it received notice Friday that the state Health Department intends to revoke its operating license.

However, the clinic, Jackson Women's Health Organization, is not expected to close anytime soon.

Under a state administrative procedures law, the clinic can remain open while it awaits a hearing by the department. That could be more than a month away.

Clinic owner Diane Derzis said this week that she expected the notice about a possible license revocation.

Health Department workers inspected the facility Jan. 16 to see if it had complied with a 2012 state law that requires anyone doing abortions at the clinic to be an OB-GYN with hospital admitting privileges.

Derzis said local hospitals would not issue privileges to out-of-state physicians who do most of the abortions at the clinic.

Admitting privileges can be difficult to obtain. Some hospitals won't issue them to out-of-state physicians, while hospitals that are affiliated with religious groups might not want to associate with anyone who does elective abortions.

"They were clear that they didn't deal with abortion and they didn't want the internal or the external pressure of dealing with it," Derzis told The Associated Press on Jan. 11.

Republican Gov. Phil Bryant, who signed the 2012 law, has said repeatedly that he wants Mississippi to be abortion-free and that he'd shut the clinic if he had the power to do it.

Supporters of the law say it's intended to protect women's safety. Opponents say admitting privileges are unnecessary because the clinic has an agreement to transfer patients to a local hospital if an emergency arises; the patients would be tended by physicians on duty at the hospital.

The clinic filed a federal lawsuit last summer as the law was about to take effect, arguing that the law is unconstitutional because it would effectively block women's access to abortion in Mississippi by closing the facility where most of the 2,000-plus abortions a year are performed in the state. A 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Roe vs. Wade established the nationwide right to abortion.

U.S. District Judge Daniel P. Jordan III gave the facility time to try to comply with the law, blocking any criminal or civil penalties during that period. Clinic attorneys are asking Jordan to extend his injunction on the law.

The clinic filed a plan with the state Health Department showing that it intended to seek admitting privileges for its physicians, and the department allowed six months for that process, until Jan. 11. The Jan. 16 inspection was triggered by the clinic's missing the Jan. 11 deadline.

The Health Department wrote a letter Thursday that was delivered to the clinic Friday, showing the findings of the inspection. The department noted that none of the three physicians affiliated with the clinic have local hospital admitting privileges. It said one of the physicians previously had the privileges, but those had expired July 27.

The department also noted that the clinic had too few parking spaces available. State regulations require the clinic to be "located in an attractive setting with sufficient parking space provided." The department told the clinic to submit a plan within 10 days showing how it would correct the parking situation. The clinic's parking lot holds fewer than 20 cars.

HTC-made au Infobar A02 launches in Japan, wraps unique Android UI in trippy body

HTC's au Infobar A02

KDDI's funky au Infobar is back! Once again designed by the famed Naoto Fukasawa, this A02 -- co-developed by HTC -- brings the series up to date with Qualcomm's 1.5GHz quad-core APQ8064 (but with just 1GB of RAM), 4.7-inch 720p display, 16GB of storage, microSD slot, 2,100mAh battery, LTE radio (800/1500) and Android 4.1. Better yet, this phone also supports both CDMA2000 800/2100 and WCDMA 850/1900/2100, making it a great global phone. Judging by one of the demo clips after the break, it seems that this Infobar's 8-megapixel main imager (with F2.0 lens) and 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera take advantage of HTC's ImageSense chip for speedy burst shots. Likewise, you'll find Beats Audio built into the system. As per typical Japanese mobile phone, the usual NFC (with Osaifu-Keitai mobile wallet), 1seg TV tuner and infrared are also packed inside the 9.7mm-thick, 147g-heavy waterproof (IPX5 and IPX7) and dustproof (IP5X) body.

We're already fans of the iconic nishikigoi (meaning "brocaded carp") color scheme as pictured above, but what really caught our attention this time are the fluid animations and uniqueness of the "iida UI" 2.0 (iida stands for "innovation," "imagination," "design" and "art") by interactive designer Yugo Nakamura. As you'll see in the video clips after the break, the home screen here shares some similarities with Windows Phone 8's counterpart -- in the way items snap to grid and resize, even though the former is enhanced by plenty of bouncy animation, more colors and funny sounds (designed by Japanese musician Cornelius). Expect this A02 -- which is also available in blue or gray -- to hit the Japanese market in mid-February.

Reese Witherspoon in talks to star in Lost Boys of Sudan film

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Reese Witherspoon is in talks to star in "The Good Lie," a movie about the Lost Boys of Sudan that Molly Smith's Black Label Media and Imagine are producing.

Philippe Falardeau will direct the film from a screenplay by "Warm Springs" scribe Margarent Nagle. Nagle developed the screenplay in the Imagine Writer's Lab, reviving a project that had stalled at Paramount years ago.

The story follows four boys who fled Sudan as violence tore the country apart. After spending years in a refugee camp, they were selected to come to the United States and got a new lease on life with a brash American woman (Witherspoon). It will explore a boy's interaction with the community in America and his struggles to adjust, raising the question of who rescued whom.

Casting for the boys has not been announced.

Smith, who launched Black Label with Trent Luckinbill and Thad Luckinbill, came aboard to finance and produce the film months ago. Black Label will produce with Imagine's Ron Howard, Brian Grazer and Karen Kehela Sherwood. Imagine's Kim Roth and Reliance's Deepak Nayar will be executive producers.

The Lost Boys of Sudan is a group of tens of thousands of young men who were displaced by the Second Sudanese Civil War during the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. The war was resolved by a cease-fire that granted South Sudan autonomy and scheduled a referendum for its independence, which has since occurred.

The issue of orphans and civilian displacement surfaced again during the genocide in Darfur and the secession of South Sudan, which has stoked conflict between the north and south over land and valuable natural resources.

The subject has inspired numerous books, plays and films, including documentaries "God Grew Tired of Us," "War Child" and 'Rebuilding Hope."

Witherspoon is represented by Management 360 and CAA.

Magnitsky's mother thanks Obama for legislation

(AP) ? The mother of a whistle-blowing Russian lawyer who died in prison is thanking President Barack Obama for a U.S. law targeting Russian officials deemed to be human rights violators involved in her son's death.

Sergei Magnitsky died in jail of untreated pancreatitis in 2009 after accusing Russian officials of stealing $230 from the state. The case has angered both Russian activists and the West, and in December, the U.S. Congress passed legislation in Magnitsky's name, calling for sanctions against officials deemed to be connected with human rights abuses.

Natalya Magnitskaya said Thursday she is grateful to Obama for facilitating the adoption of the bill saying that it "will somehow keep my son's memory."

She also criticized Moscow's decision to bar Americans from adopting Russian children in retaliation.

Women have caught up to men on lung cancer risk

Smoke like a man, die like a man.

U.S. women who smoke today have a much greater risk of dying from lung cancer than they did decades ago, partly because they are starting younger and smoking more ? that is, they are lighting up like men, new research shows.

Women also have caught up with men in their risk of dying from smoking-related illnesses. Lung cancer risk leveled off in the 1980s for men but is still rising for women.

"It's a massive failure in prevention," said one study leader, Dr. Michael Thun of the American Cancer Society. And it's likely to repeat itself in places like China and Indonesia where smoking is growing, he said. About 1.3 billion people worldwide smoke.

The research is in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine. It is one of the most comprehensive looks ever at long-term trends in the effects of smoking and includes the first generation of U.S. women who started early in life and continued for decades, long enough for health effects to show up.

The U.S. has more than 35 million smokers ? about 20 percent of men and 18 percent of women. The percentage of people who smoke is far lower than it used to be; rates peaked around 1960 in men and two decades later in women.

Researchers wanted to know if smoking is still as deadly as it was in the 1980s, given that cigarettes have changed (less tar), many smokers have quit, and treatments for many smoking-related diseases have improved.

They also wanted to know more about smoking and women. The famous surgeon general's report in 1964 said smoking could cause lung cancer in men, but evidence was lacking in women at the time since relatively few of them had smoked long enough.

One study, led by Dr. Prabhat Jha of the Center for Global Health Research in Toronto, looked at about 217,000 Americans in federal health surveys between 1997 and 2004.

A second study, led by Thun, tracked smoking-related deaths through three periods ? 1959-65, 1982-88 and 2000-10 ? using seven large population health surveys covering more than 2.2 million people.

Among the findings:

? The risk of dying of lung cancer was more than 25 times higher for female smokers in recent years than for women who never smoked. In the 1960s, it was only three times higher. One reason: After World War II, women started taking up the habit at a younger age and began smoking more.

?A person who never smoked was about twice as likely as a current smoker to live to age 80. For women, the chances of surviving that long were 70 percent for those who never smoked and 38 percent for smokers. In men, the numbers were 61 percent and 26 percent.

?Smokers in the U.S. are three times more likely to die between ages 25 and 79 than non-smokers are. About 60 percent of those deaths are attributable to smoking.

?Women are far less likely to quit smoking than men are. Among people 65 to 69, the ratio of former to current smokers is 4-to-1 for men and 2-to-1 for women.

?Smoking shaves more than 10 years off the average life span, but quitting at any age buys time. Quitting by age 40 avoids nearly all the excess risk of death from smoking. Men and women who quit when they were 25 to 34 years old gained 10 years; stopping at ages 35 to 44 gained 9 years; at ages 45 to 54, six years; at ages 55 to 64, four years.

?The risk of dying from other lung diseases such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis is rising in men and women, and the rise in men is a surprise because their lung cancer risk leveled off in 1980s.

Changes in cigarettes since the 1960s are a "plausible explanation" for the rise in non-cancer lung deaths, researchers write. Most smokers switched to cigarettes that were lower in tar and nicotine as measured by tests with machines, "but smokers inhaled more deeply to get the nicotine they were used to," Thun said. Deeper inhalation is consistent with the kind of lung damage seen in the illnesses that are rising, he said.

Scientists have made scant progress against lung cancer compared with other forms of the disease, and it remains the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. More than 160,000 people die of it in the U.S. each year.

The federal government, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the cancer society and several universities paid for the new studies. Thun testified against tobacco companies in class-action lawsuits challenging the supposed benefits of cigarettes with reduced tar and nicotine, but he donated his payment to the cancer society.

Smoking needs more attention as a health hazard, Dr. Steven A. Schroeder of the University of California, San Francisco, wrote in a commentary in the journal.

"More women die of lung cancer than of breast cancer. But there is no 'race for the cure' for lung cancer, no brown ribbon" or high-profile advocacy groups for lung cancer, he wrote.

Kathy DeJoseph, 62, of suburban Atlanta, finally quit smoking after 40 years ? to qualify for lung cancer surgery last year.

"I tried everything that came along, I just never could do it," even while having chemotherapy, she said.

It's a powerful addiction, she said: "I still every day have to resist wanting to go buy a pack."

PFT: Redskins tried to meet fake online woman

manti172way-bea8db171ee6908b7d7a8261693d081fc4970eb0-s6-c10Getty Images

Manti Te?o isn?t the only football player who?s been fooled online by someone posing as a woman who wants to develop a relationship.

At least four players on the Redskins were duped during the 2012 season by a person posing as a woman who was sending them messages online and hoping to meet them in person, Jeff Darlington of NFL.com reports. Players attempted to meet her in person but nothing ever came of those meetings.

To be clear, this is a far cry from Te?o situation: Te?o spent months telling people a nonexistent person was his girlfriend, then spent more months telling people he was grieving the death of a nonexistent person, and continued that latter story even after he found out the girlfriend didn?t exist. In the case of these Redskins players, it was simply a matter of exchanging online messages with a person they thought was a woman they might be able to meet in person, then never being able to track her down. There is no indication that any of the players lied or did anything improper, or that the person posing as the woman who wanted to meet them attempted to get money or anything else from them.

But the Redskins were concerned enough about the situation that Phillip Daniels, the former NFL defensive end who is now the team?s director of player development, posted a sign in the locker room identifying the woman by her Twitter and Instagram screen names and informing all players to stay away from the woman.

?Once we found out the person wasn?t real, we went from there,? Daniels told NFL.com.

Daniels said young men can be easy targets if they start getting messages through social media that come from an account linked to the picture of an attractive woman ? even though they should realize that just because there?s an attractive woman?s picture associated with the account, that doesn?t mean this woman is a real person who really wants to meet them.

?If you think about it, a lot of them are single guys, and they see somebody who looks good in a picture or something,? Daniels said. ?In many cases, it involves someone who is a fan of the team, so they?ll start talking about the team. You have to recognize that something just isn?t right. But you?re talking about a lot of guys who are single. I don?t fault the guys. I fault the people who are doing this crazy stuff, causing these problems.?

Fortunately for the Redskins, none of their players are as gullible as Manti Te?o.

Hawkins Constructions Blames SFO Probe On Contract... | Stuff.co.nz

One of New Zealand's largest privately-owned construction companies blames "differing contractual interpretations" for a client complaining to the Serious Fraud Office.

Yesterday the SFO said it had closed its investigation into Hawkins Construction following the serving of search warrants and seizing of computers from a central Auckland construction site in August last year.

It is understood the investigation focused on complaints about Hawkins' contracted role in state-owned Transpower's $419 million upgrade of Auckland's electricity grid, particularly ongoing work at the Hobson Street substation.

Hawkins' executive general manager Dan Ashby welcomed the decision not to prosecute.

"We have maintained all along that there has been no intent to defraud by Hawkins or its employees, and are pleased that no evidence of wrongdoing was found," he said.

"The SFO's view that the issue is one of differing contractual interpretations is consistent with our own view." NZX-listed Vector is a partner in the upgrade and said in its 2011 report to shareholders that its contribution amounted to $46m.

SFO acting chief executive Simon McArley said that while the five-month investigation had thrown up some unusual conduct, no evidence had been found that would justify a criminal prosecution.

"While the manner in which the parties conducted their business appears to us to be unusual, we have evidence from industry experts that it is entirely possible that those involved honestly believed the conduct was legitimate," he said.

McArley said the episode should serve as a warning to all businesses entering into contracts, particularly in the construction industry, and he encouraged firms to be up-front and honest.

"Attempts to disguise, bury or fudge the true nature of transactions can easily risk crossing the line into a criminal deception," he said.

He wouldn't name the complainant that initiated the investigation.

Vector and Transpower did not respond to questions about whether the contractual dispute would be taken further.

Business: The History of the Shower Bath - Bath & Showers - Home ...

?The shower bath is something we take for granted and piumini moncler although it is relatively new to our bathroom it has origins leading right back to the early Egyptians.

The shower bath was a revelation to our homes when first introduced giving us the choice to either take a shower or bath whenever we preferred. However the early Egyptians as we know were extremely advanced with the creation of the pyramids and their society in general. One of the greatest assets was their wealth which was only matched by their extravagance and the cleanliness they were famous for. The Egyptians would frequently bath and indulge in luxurious fragrances and cosmetics.

Other great civilizations also prided themselves in their cleanliness. The Greeks were extremely proud of their health which meant a good diet, plenty of exercise and keeping themselves clean. They were famous for bathing in a pedestal type of wash basin known as a louterion, whereas the majority of the wealth actually had their very own bathrooms. The Greeks were also very inventive and actually devised a shower system that actually sprayed bathers with water.

The Romans were another famous civilization renowned for their cleanliness with the significance propagated against disease. They actually went to such extent to make sure their society was clean that they constructed elaborate aqueducts to carry the water to their cities coach factory outlet and built large baths for the public to freely use. These bathing areas became Louis Vuitton Outlet not only a location for cleaning but for socialising. It was an area where the old could reminisce and revive their aching limbs and where workers could release the tensions of the day.

Many of the Roman baths would be built on the site of natural springs and would be formed around three central chambers, a cold room (known as frigidarium) a warm room (known as tempidarium) and a hot room (known as caldarium). The Romans were also one of the first civilizations to use soap as an ointment to help with cleansing the body of grime and dirt. Whereas the women would use razors and tweezers to remove unsightly hairs and pumice stones and creams to beautify their bodies.

It is widely believed via myths and stories that in the Middle Ages people were smelly, unclean and unkempt, but this is very wrong. People were extremely sensitive about their appearances just as they are today. During this age there was a vast selection of bath houses where for a small fee people could take daily baths. People throughout Northern Europe would utilise sweat baths and by the fourteenth century homes began to install tubs in their own bedrooms. It was not uncommon for people to actually make their very own soaps and it was not long before several large soap manufacturers became established in Britain which made a very lucrative trade from selling soaps.

Setting the Dark on Fire: Beautiful view of clouds of cosmic dust in region of Orion

Jan. 23, 2013 ? In space, dense clouds of cosmic gas and dust are the birthplaces of new stars. In visible light, this dust is dark and obscuring, hiding the stars behind it. So much so that, when astronomer William Herschel observed one such cloud in the constellation of Scorpius in 1774, he thought it was a region empty of stars and is said to have exclaimed, "Truly there is a hole in the sky here!" [1]

In order to better understand star formation, astronomers need telescopes that can observe at longer wavelengths, such as the submillimetre range, in which the dark dust grains shine rather than absorb light. APEX, on the Chajnantor Plateau in the Chilean Andes, is the largest single-dish submillimetre-wavelength telescope operating in the southern hemisphere, and is ideal for astronomers studying the birth of stars in this way.

Located in the constellation of Orion (The Hunter), 1500 light-years away from Earth, the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex is the closest region of massive star formation to Earth, and contains a treasury of bright nebulae, dark clouds and young stars. The new image shows just part of this vast complex in visible light, with the APEX observations overlaid in brilliant orange tones that seem to set the dark clouds on fire. Often, the glowing knots from APEX correspond to darker patches in visible light -- the tell-tale sign of a dense cloud of dust that absorbs visible light, but glows at submillimetre wavelengths, and possibly a site of star formation.

The bright patch below of the centre of the image is the nebula NGC 1999. This region -- when seen in visible light -- is what astronomers call a reflection nebula, where the pale blue glow of background starlight is reflected from clouds of dust. The nebula is mainly illuminated by the energetic radiation from the young star V380 Orionis [2] lurking at its heart. In the centre of the nebula is a dark patch, which can be seen even more clearly in a well-known image (http://www.spacetelescope.org/images/opo0010a/) from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope.

Normally, a dark patch such as this would indicate a dense cloud of cosmic dust, obscuring the stars and nebula behind it. However, in this image we can see that the patch remains strikingly dark, even when the APEX observations are included. Thanks to these APEX observations, combined with infrared observations from other telescopes, astronomers believe that the patch is in fact a hole or cavity in the nebula, excavated by material flowing out of the star V380 Orionis. For once, it truly is a hole in the sky!

The region in this image is located about two degrees south of the large and well-known Orion Nebula (Messier 42), which can be seen at the top edge of the wider view in visible light from the Digitized Sky Survey.

The APEX observations used in this image were led by Thomas Stanke (ESO), Tom Megeath (University of Toledo, USA), and Amy Stutz (Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, Heidelberg, Germany). APEX is a collaboration between the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy (MPIfR), the Onsala Space Observatory (OSO) and ESO. Operation of APEX at Chajnantor is entrusted to ESO.

Notes

[1] In German, "Hier ist wahrhaftig ein Loch im Himmel!"

[2] V380 Orionis has a high surface temperature of about 10,000 Kelvin (about the same in degrees Celsius), nearly twice that of our own Sun. Its mass is estimated to be 3.5 times that of the Sun.

Hillary Clinton hits back on Benghazi criticisms

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pounds her fist on her table during a contentious exchange about Benghazi with??In one of her last acts as America?s top diplomat, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton hit back hard Wednesday at fierce Republican criticisms over the deadly Sept. 11, 2012, terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya. Clinton, delivering long-awaited congressional testimony, alternately choked up, pounded the table in anger, laughed and offered clinical replies while vowing to do her utmost to prevent similar tragedies in the future as she was hammered by combative Republicans.

"You let the consulate become a death trap, and that?s national security malpractice," Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-S.C.) said during the afternoon House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing. He asked Clinton to define what taking responsibility for the attack means to her.

"I think I've made that very clear, congressman," Clinton responded testily.

Duncan added that the American people felt mislead by the way the administration handled the dissemination of information surrounding the attacks?a comment that had been repeated throughout the day of hearings, which started in the morning when Clinton appeared before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Clinton also faced repeated criticism from some on the House Foreign Affairs Committee for not being interviewed by the Accountability Review Board investigating the attack.

"I think that?s outrageous," Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., said after questioning why Clinton was not interviewed.

"I was not asked to speak," Clinton responded, adding that she would have been "happy to ... if they thought I was relevant."

Earlier in the day, Clinton said to the Foreign Relations Committee, ?For me, this is not just a matter of policy?it?s personal."

Her voice broke as she recalled welcoming home the ?flag-draped caskets? of U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and three other Americans killed in the terrorist strike at the compound, and putting her arms around bereaved family members.

And she hit the witness table with her fist several times during a contentious exchange with Republican Sen. Ron Johnson, who accused President Barack Obama?s administration of misleading Americans by initially saying the attack grew out of a protest against an Internet video mocking Islam. There was no such demonstration, as officials later acknowledged. Johnson said, ?We were misled.?

?With all due respect, the fact is we had four dead Americans. Was it because of a protest? Or was it because of guys out for a walk one night who decided they?d go kill some Americans? What difference, at this point, does it make,? Clinton scolded Johnson, raising her voice. ?It is our job to figure out what happened and do everything we can to prevent it from ever happening again, Senator.?

And Clinton criticized Congress throughout Wednesday's hearings, calling on lawmakers to authorize department funding?something she said the Senate was capable of when she served as a New York senator?as well as approve new rules that would allow personnel to be fired in the absence of a "breach of duty."

Democrats repeatedly made what they probably considered sly allusions to speculation that Clinton will run for president come 2016. Sen. Robert Menendez predicted, ?You will not go gently from the world stage,? and Sen. Barbara Boxer said, ?You will be sorely missed?but I, for one, hope not for too long.?

Even some Republicans joined in on 2016 talk.

"I wish you the best in your future endeavors ... mostly," Ohio Republican Rep. Steve Chabot said during the House committee hearing, drawing laughter from Clinton herself and other hearing attendees.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton responds forcefully to intense questioning on the September attack on the U.S.??

Clinton, whose department has drawn heavy fire over the insufficient security arrangements at the American compound in Benghazi, also praised diplomatic security officials. ?I literally trust them with my life," she said during the Senate hearing. And she repeatedly denied being aware of numerous requests for more security in Benghazi. "I didn't see those requests," Clinton added.

Senate committee Republicans seized on that admission. Sen. John McCain, in his first hearing as a member of the panel, drew a chuckle from Clinton when he described her as being "as combative as ever" and an appreciative nod as he declared, "we are proud of you" and underlined "you are viewed with admiration and respect." But the Arizona lawmaker quickly got down to business.

He described Clinton's answers as "not satisfactory to me" and scolded the administration for its evolving explanation about who carried out the attack. Americans "don't deserve false answers," he said. "You oughta have your facts straight."

Republican Sen. Rand Paul, making his maiden appearance, was blunter, charging that the fact that Clinton had not been more personally involved had "cost lives."

Paul said, "Had I been president at the time and I found that you did not read the cables from Benghazi, you did not read the cables from Ambassador Stevens, I would have relieved you of your post. I think it's inexcusable."

Clinton said anew that she accepted responsibility for the tragedy.

The secretary of state also said that American diplomats overseas cannot hide behind higher walls and more armed guards. ?Our men and women who serve overseas understand that we accept a level of risk to protect the country we love,? she said. ?They represent the best traditions of a bold and generous nation. They cannot work in bunkers and do their jobs.?

She rebuked those who may advocate that the U.S. take a more limited role on the world stage at a time when the ?Arab Spring? has sown chaos across North Africa and the Muslim world. ?We cannot afford to retreat now,? she said.

?When America is absent, especially from unstable environments, there are consequences," Clinton said. "Extremism takes root, our interests suffer, our security at home is threatened.?

Clinton also appeared to confirm that those behind the attacks have not yet been captured.

?We continue to hunt the terrorists responsible for the attacks in Benghazi and are determined to bring them to justice,? she said during the Senate hearing.

Among Clinton?s more notable?and chilling?other comments: Islamist fighters around the region are now equipped with heavy weapons seized from unsecured Libyan arsenals after the fall of strongman Moammar Gadhafi. Critics of the NATO-led campaign to help rebels topple him had warned of the prospect that his arsenals would fall into extremist hands.

That proliferation is ?the source of one of our biggest threats? in the region, Clinton said. The American mission in Benghazi was trying to ?track down and find and recover? weapons like missiles that can bring down an airplane, she said. But there is ?no doubt," she added, that the extremists who carried out a bloody hostage-taking in Algeria, members of Al-Qaida in the Maghreb (AQIM) in Mali and fighters in Syria all had arms from Libya.

?We just have to do a much better job,? she said.

Clinton also told lawmakers that the U.S. ?cannot confirm? claims by Algeria?s government that the hostage-takers had also taken part in the attack on Benghazi. And she warned that some 20 American diplomatic facilities face what she described as a serious threat environment.

The secretary of state had been expected to testify in December, but suffered a concussion in a fall at her home while recovering from a stomach bug, then needed treatment for a blood clot near her brain. She had taken questions from lawmakers on the issue once before, but Republicans complained that she had not shared much information.

Clinton appeared one day before Democratic Sen. John Kerry goes before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee he used to chair for a confirmation hearing to succeed her as secretary of state. Democratic Sen. Menendez, Kerry?s successor, leads both hearings.

The Sept. 11 attack raised new questions about Obama?s handling of the ?Arab Spring? uprisings that toppled authoritarian regimes in places like Egypt and Libya. It also triggered a months-long battle over how the administration handled repeated requests from Stevens for more security and then explained the tragedy to the American public.

Most notably, U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice withdrew her name from consideration to be Clinton?s successor in the face of Republican opposition. Rice went on major Sunday news shows one week after the attack in Benghazi and, relying on administration-approved talking points, described it as emerging from a protest against an Internet video that ridicules Islam. There was no such demonstration.

Clinton told the committee on Wednesday that she had not been consulted on the decision to make Rice?who was an expert in neither embassy security issues nor Libya? the official in charge of updating Americans on the tragedy. But she defended Rice. "People have accused Ambassador Rice and the administration of misleading Americans," she noted. "Nothing could be further from the truth."

Some of the anger has fizzled, sapped by contentious congressional hearings and a scathing report commissioned by Clinton that faulted the State Department for its handling of repeated requests from Stevens for more security. That report also refuted media reports that the administration chose not to send in troops that might have been able to save Stevens and his colleagues.

The Varsity ? Food Finds: One Hour Cafeteria

With just over a year under its belt, Spadina?s One Hour Cafeteria is quickly gaining recognition for its addictive combination of comfortable, minimalist ambiance, pleasing array of Chinese teas, and light yet satisfying snacks.

JOSHUA FUOMO / THE VARSITY

The brainchild of former U of T architecture student Han Shao, One Hour?s premise is simple: keep things, well, simple. White walls, adorned with little more than the odd wooden coat hanger or piece of local art, are contrasted with natural wood stools and tabletops. The dining area ? split in two by the front desk and kitchen ? also features a handful of communal wooden bench tables and bean-bag chairs, creating the illusion of openness in a narrow dining space.

The caf??s selection of food options is small, especially compared to the encyclopedic menus so often found in neighboring Chinatown restaurants. Instead, One Hour places its array of specialty teas and drinks in the foreground. Ranging from $5 to $8, each tea is made to order and features a variety of fresh ingredients. The banana tea ($5.99), a combination of fresh banana, green tea, milk, sugar, and ice, is served over sweet tapioca pearls and garnished with a chocolate-hazelnut rolled wafer. Drink options also include freshly-made juices, such as honeydew and papaya ($5.99?6.99). A ?make your own? drink option allows diners to choose the flavour of fruit-infused tea, the type of tea (black or green), and the type of tapioca/jelly that they would like to include in their creation ($3.99?5.99).

JOSHUA FUOMO / THE VARSITY

As far as food goes, One Hour separates its dishes into ?big? and ?small? options; the former features Asian specialty soups and noodle dishes, while the latter focuses on appetizer-sized snacks best suited for sharing. The restaurant?s beef noodle soup ($6.29 small/$7.29 large), a more refined version of what can be found at every pho restaurant in Toronto and elsewhere, showcases fresh ingredients like diced tomato and cilantro on top of thinly sliced beef and delicate rice noodles, all of which is steeped in a rich beef broth. One Hour?s cheesecake in a jar ($5.99), one of only two dessert options, is a mason jar filled to the brim with tangy, smooth cheesecake filling and topped with sweet strawberry preserves.

JOSHUA FUOMO / THE VARSITY

If you have yet to be initiated into the world of Chinese teashops, One Hour is the perfect destination to start your culinary adventure. With its warm and comforting atmosphere and firm dedication to quality ingredients, the future of this minimalist teashop is nothing but bright.

The One Hour Cafeteria is located at 435 Spadina Ave. It is open every day from noon to midnight.

Obama adviser hedges optimism on stricter gun laws

(AP) ? The Obama administration says it's confident stricter gun laws can be passed, but it's hedging its optimism by stressing just how politically difficult it will be.

White House senior adviser David Plouffe listed gun legislation and immigration reform as two top domestic priorities as President Barack Obama readies for a second term.

He said the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School has changed the gun debate and that a big spotlight will be on the issue in coming months. But he did not sound assured that some measures would even get a vote.

"I think there are 60 votes in the Senate, 218 votes in the House, if the process can just play itself out and we can really get votes on some of these things," Plouffe said on CNN. "But it's going to be hard work."

Republican Sen. John Barrasso said he doubted that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid would bring all of the administration's proposals regarding gun violence to the floor.

"He has six Democrats up for election in two years in states where the president received fewer than 42 percent of the votes," Barrasso said on CNN. "And he doesn't want his Democrats to have to choose between their own constituents and the president's positions."

Both men sounded more optimistic about the prospects for an immigration overhaul.

Plouffe said he believes there's broader support from Republicans nationally than there is from Republicans in Congress. Still, he said "the stars are aligned" for a bill to include beefing up border security as well as giving those already in the U.S. illegally a path to citizenship. He cited business organizations and religious leaders as key players backing a comprehensive immigration bill.

Barrasso said he would like to see more immigrants educated in the United States allowed to stay.

"We need to deal with immigration," he said. "And I think we will."

Plouffe made the rounds on the Sunday talk shows to outline the administration's agenda for a second term. He said the president's focus will be on improving the economy. Obama believes the best way to do that is to invest in education and manufacturing, while also seeking what he called "balanced deficit reduction."

Republicans agreed to let tax cuts expire this year for those workers whose incomes exceed $400,000 a year, but Plouffe said that future negotiations on reducing the deficit will have to include more tax revenue as well as spending cuts and changes to entitlement programs.

"We've dealt with the tax rate issue. Now it's about loopholes," Plouffe said on ABC. "And I think the country would be well-served by tax and entitlement reform, because it'll help our economy."

In leading up to Monday's inauguration, the White House has sought to leave the impression that the president will seek common ground with Republicans. It will also seek to undertake public campaigns to build pressure on Congress to act on the administration's legislative priorities.

The new mobilizing effort will be led by a tax-exempt group called Organizing for Action. The move represents the first time a sitting president has ever transformed his presidential campaign operation into an outside group with the express purpose of promoting his agenda. "We're also going to bring the American people more into the debate than we did in the first term."

Plouffe, the 2008 campaign manager, is expected to join the group's board after he leaves the administration later this month.

Climate Change: Obama Promises Action

President Obama's inauguration speech was broad, as such addresses tend to be, but he got specific when it came to climate change.

In his second inaugural address, the president mentioned the recent wave of severe weather that some have linked to global warming. From his address, as prepared for delivery:

We will respond to the threat of climate change, knowing that the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations. Some may still deny the overwhelming judgment of science, but none can avoid the devastating impact of raging fires, and crippling drought, and more powerful storms.

The path towards sustainable energy sources will be long and sometimes difficult. But America cannot resist this transition; we must lead it. We cannot cede to other nations the technology that will power new jobs and new industries - we must claim its promise. That is how we will maintain our economic vitality and our national treasure - our forests and waterways; our croplands and snowcapped peaks. That is how we will preserve our planet, commanded to our care by God. That's what will lend meaning to the creed our fathers once declared.

Talking about climate change as a pressing issue is a new thing for a presidential inaugural address. Obama made passing mention of it four years ago, during his first inaugural address in 2009, and Bill Clinton mentioned the environment.

"With old friends and former foes, we'll work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat and roll back the specter of a warming planet," Obama said four years ago. But today's mention seems to be the most extended case for action on climate change in any inaugural address in recent history.

Climate change was a huge part of Obama's presidential agenda, until it got derailed midway through his first term.

When Obama came into office, his legislative agenda included three major pillars - health care, energy, and education reform - as advertised by staffers at Organizing for America, the post-campaign apparatus tasked with pushing his priorities through Congress. As we saw, only health care got through Congress.

A climate-change bill, in fact, helped sink Democrats in 2010.

As prospects looked murkier for a climate bill in the slow-footed Senate, then-House-Speaker Nancy Pelosi called a vote on a climate bill that included a cap-and-trade system for limiting carbon emissions. It passed, 219 to 212, on June 26, 2009, with 211 Democrats voting in favor.

Energy reform ultimately stalled in the Senate, and the House vote proved a major political liability: Republican candidates, party committees, and outside groups hammered Democrats across the country for supporting the "cap and tax" agenda, decrying the idea of taxing businesses for emissions in a bad economy. Without action in the Senate, the Democrats' climate push proved costly politically: Democrats lost enough House seats in 2010 to hand the majority over to Republicans.

Heading into Obama's second term, near-term action on energy seems unlikely. Republicans still hold the House majority, and the makeup of the Senate has not changed significantly, meaning the prospects of energy reform have actually dimmed since the effort failed in 2009 and 2010 - when Democrats controlled both houses.

Obama's inaugural address may not signal that he intends to push legislation through Congress, unless Democrats can retake the House of Representatives, but it comes at a peculiar moment for climate-change politics: Superstorm Sandy confirmed to some that climate change is a real, tangible threat that requires immediate action, even though the legislative numbers don't quite add up.

The Foundations Of Building Muscle | ArticleTree.info

by RussHowe

As a fitness instructor, one of the most popular questions I hear in the gym is people wondering how to build muscle fast and retain it. This is second only to people asking how to lose weight. Today I'm going to share a few proven factors with you.

Both of the steps given in today's article will help you see results.

If you have been training consistently but not seeing any results or if you have never picked up a weight in your life but would like to try, the two proven points below will help you get your progress on the right track.

* Know your diet

* Supplements are useful but not essential

Much like any aspect of life, when it comes to fitness people are often so caught up in the fantasy of finding a simple miracle fix for all their problems they neglect to realize that if they just nailed down the basics they could have already got the results they wanted.

Building muscle size and definition isn't just about eating a ton of extra calories per day. Where you get those calories from plays a huge part in how your body will look and what type of size you add. By making a couple of simple changes to your diet you can enhance your results massively.

There is no one 'best' way to diet. Despite all the trainers out there trying to sell their 'best ever plan' to you, there are numerous ways to get results in the gym. You simply have to get the basics right and that's what we're going to show you today. One of the best diets around is known as the 3-5-2 plan. To work out how many calories per day you need to pack on some size, multiply your target weight (in pounds) by fifteen. So a 180 pound guy would require around 2700 kcals in total.

The 3-5-2 system gets it's name because it means 30% protein, 50% carbohydrates and 20% fats. It's good knowing what total calorie target to aim for, but it's even better knowing exactly how many grams of each macro nutrient to look for.

So to see how many calories per day need to come from each macronutrient simply use the 3-5-2 system now. In this case, 2700 calories multiplied by thirty percent will give you 810. This is the number of daily calories you need from protein.

To convert your protein calories into grams so you know how much to eat, just divide that 810 by four. This gives you 202g. For carbohydrates, take your carb calories and divide by four. When it comes to your daily fats, take your fat calories and divide it by nine. This will give you a complete breakdown of how many calories to eat per day and how much of it needs to come from protein, carbohydrates and fats respectively.

Secondly we will discuss supplements. People often put too much emphasis on bodybuilding supplements and not enough emphasis on the rest of their diet. We know many people at the gym who do this, they train hard and take their protein supplement but they don't look after the rest of their diet at all and they refuse to admit it, often kidding themselves that they don't know why their training isn't working.

While you could easily spend hundreds of pounds or dollars on products each month, you shouldn't look any further than the basics. Add a solid whey protein supplement and a creatine product to your diet, nothing more. There are countless supplements out there which will, of course, all tell you that you 'need' them to get bigger but the truth is it's just marketing talk. Where there's money involved, there is undoubtedly hype.

Having now got the basics of both supplements and diet, you are now in a much better position than most when it comes to knowing how to build muscle in the gym. In fact, the next time you hear somebody at your local fitness center complaining at their own lack of results you could probably lend them a helping hand.

Investing & Day Trading Education: The Day Trading Academy

The time has come to choose a winner!? It is going to be extremely overwhelming as nearly 5,000 applicants applied to become part our new training program in Jordan.

One of the responsibilities of being successful is also giving back.? The members of the LTD Project and the students of the training program have been doing extremely well.? We wanted to give someone the opportunity to invest in their future by not only giving them our tools and resources, but also including an all expense paid trip to Jordan.

It is about the lifestyle and being able to live the life that you want.

Most people often connect day trading with money and in the end we are all in this to make money.? The reason that we are so careful in selecting who joins the program is because we make sure we train those that want to make this a new career.

Devils Pool

Freedom Exhibit 1: Swimming At The Edge of the Devil?s Pool, Victoria Falls

If one considers what success really means, our true definition of success, one will find what is at the core of what we want in life.

Our focus at the Day Trading Academy is total freedom; location, time, and financial freedom.

The ability to live the lifestyle that you want to live.? Day trading is one of the only professions in the world that allows someone to make money while the global economy is in a recession.? That alone opens a world of possibilities but no, that isn?t enough.

We want to have the ability to live anywhere in the world. Over the course of the last 3 years I have had the ability to live in exotic locations such as Ethiopia, Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, and even India.

To be able to work whenever you want however you want. ?Even though we trade in the markets the internet allows us a level of flexibility that cannot be found in many other professions.? Most traders are in the futures, forex, or equities markets anywhere around the world.

Hyenas Ethiopia

Freedom Exhibit 2: Feeding Hyenas in Ethiopia

The tools that we teach with the Congressive Trading System allow you to trade any market around the world, at any time of the day.

We have a trader using our principles trading the Australian Bund, the DAX, and now we are applying the same principles to the Indian equivalent of the E-mini S&P 500, the NIFTY.

Once someone can grasp the basics of learning how to day trade all one has to focus on is making a consistent profit every single day. No matter how small that profit is, at the end of the day we can then add scale to our trading.

Imagine just making $50 a day per contract but trading 10 contracts.? That equals a whopping $500 a day which equates to over 6 figures a year.

Day Trading in Brazil

Freedom Exhibit 3: Penthouse Office in Brazil

The previous contest winner, Josh, sadly couldn?t continue his training because of his responsibilities with the military.? In Jordan, we plan on getting the winner started on the right foot with one on one training.? We have begun to choose the finalists to the contest and look forward to sharing updates as they progress.

The free training program will begin immediately once the contest winner is chosen.? This will be followed by a once in a lifetime trip to Jordan with one on one training.

No nonsense; just one of the new 7 Wonders Of The World, the lowest point on earth, Roman ruins, and of course one on one training in the exotic Middle East.

Stay profitable my friends.

how leaders ignite engagement | O.C. Tanner

Burning match

New economy leadership requires a skillful combination of business expertise and personal rapport. It?s no longer enough for leaders to be highly capable?they must also build meaningful and authentic bonds with employees and vigorously champion engagement initiatives because engaged employees are more productive and innovative, offer customers better service, and are less likely to leave.

Resources invested in employees? careers, personal development, and job satisfaction will pay off. Employees who feel a strong connection to their employer?aren?t?just passionate or proud?they?re committed and possess invaluable line-of-sight to both their own future and to the company?s mission and goals. They?re enthused and in gear, applying their unique skills, talents, and discretionary effort to help their organizations succeed.

Leaders can ignite engagement by articulating goals, painting a compelling vision of the future, and helping employees understand how they can fulfill their own definitions of interesting and meaningful work while contributing richly to the company?s progress.

Smart leaders engage all of their employees in building the business, from idea creation though execution. Everyone in the company should feel they have a chance to make a difference and accomplish great things. While inspiration may start at the top, good leadership drives that inspiration deep into the company through personal connections and by providing challenging and interesting opportunities.

Leaders at all levels need to regularly coach team members. Involve employees in solving problems and provide opportunities for change and challenge to feed their need for achievement. This helps them satisfy their desire for belonging and growth, so they don?t erroneously assume they need to acquire new experiences or build their resume elsewhere.

Executives should also demonstrate consistency in words and actions, communicate frequently?with a lot of depth?and align all business practices and behaviors throughout the organization to drive results and engagement. People need examples of the paths they might take to contribute in new ways. Stay attentive to employees? goals and interests and look out for projects and roles that will propel the organization forward while satisfying personal aspirations.

Recognition and incentive programs are another powerful tool for building employee engagement and the bottom line. These programs are one of the few business tools where cost can be based on actual performance and paid out only after the desired results have been achieved. According to a SITE Foundation study, effectively designed programs increase performance by an average of 22 percent and team incentives can increase performance by as much as 44 percent.

Incentive programs also help increase employees? interest in their work. The study also found when rewards are first offered for completing a task, a 15 percent increase in performance occurs. Asked to persist toward a goal, employees increase their performance by 27 percent, and when reward programs are used to encourage ?thinking smarter,? performance increased by 26 percent.
