There are three types of Behavior Disorders recognized in the DSM the professional guide used in Diagnosing
mental health disorders. ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder); ODD ( Oppositional Defiant Disorder); and CD ( Conduct Disorder).
The main symptoms of ADHD are : impulsivity, hyperactivity, limited attention span, and distractability.
Children with ODD Oppositional Defiant Disorder are usually non compliant and have a negative mood and are irritable . Up to 15 percent of children have ODD. If left untreated this can lead to antisocial and delinquent behavior problems .
Conduct Disorders show a pattern of violating the rights and boundaries of others that are the appropriate norms at: school , home, and in public. Conduct Disorders are correlated with ODD and ADHD.
Anxious and depressed children may display ADHD and or CD behaviors.
Research shows that individual therapy combined with family therapy and additional techniques have the best outcomes years later.
Family therapy helps parents with: discipline , management skills, coping w stress , improving family communication , problem solving, conflict resolution, behavior modification systems , addressing school and academic challenges,and reducing behavior problems .
Individual one on one therapy helps the child work through unresolved road blocks and emotional issues and helps them gain insight into healthy behaviors. Children and teens learn skills for : anxiety management , anger management , mood regulation , stress management , improving social skills , healthy communication , building self esteem , understanding feelings , expressing feelings , helpful thinking,
