With the subtle smell of salt water lingering in the air, the Turtle Bay Resort provides city dwellers with a pristine outdoor seaside experience. The nearby green and lush settings of O?ahu?s North Shore is a great escape from loud and busy urban life. ?We are the only resort here in the North Shore,? says Laura, the front desk concierge. ?Away from city life, guests appreciate Hawaii?s environment more. This is the reason why I believe that tourists and the tourism industry alike should further expand into Hawaii?s natural settings.?
Unlike other city side hotels on the island, the Turtle Bay Resort is appropriately surrounded by beautiful nature. ?I don?t like Waikiki at all. Disgusting. It feels like Hollywood, but on a beach. I absolutely love the North Shore though, it?s very different from where I am from,? says Adam, a guest from San Diego. ?I like to call the North Shore here paradise for West Coast mainland people.?
This far off resort first opened in 1972 as Del Webbs?s Kulima Resort Hotel and Country Club. Del Webb was a hotel developer seeking to build the first casino in the state. ?Kulima Resort, now known as Turtle Bay, was originally made to be a gambling hotspot. The owner thought Hawaii was going to pass the gaming law. So that?s why the lobby has low ceilings and the lightning is quite dim. This resort was meant to be a Las Vegas experience here in Hawaii,? says Laura.
The resort was then renamed Turtle Bay in 1983 under new management. Laura says that the resort now focuses on providing guests with unique recreational activities that encompasses the beautiful North Shore environment.
The Turtle Bay Resort provides many guests with outdoor activities that many other resorts do not regularly offer. ?Sky?s the limit for activities because of our amazing location. We can schedule anything you want to do,? Laura greets.
The resort provides exciting activities such as, horseback riding, helicopter rides, and gliding. ?A lot of hotels in Waikiki send their guests here to ride horses. We also have our own helicopter landing pad, so guests can take off right here,? Laura says.
There are also many sports and physical activities that guests can participate in. The world class golf course holds amateur tournaments and professional tournaments alike. Golfers of different levels of expertise enjoy the seaside air as they practice their swings. Other sports facilities and recreation facilities, such as a tennis court, basketball court and a swimming pool, are located nearby. ?We have a lot more outdoor activities available from our resort than any other hotel in Waikiki or town,? Laura says.
Turtle Bay also gives guests the opportunity to participate in aquatic activities and sports, such as surfing, paddling and fishing. Premier surfing lessons are offered by the Hans Hedemann Surf School stationed in the resort?s main lobby. The surfing school provides group and private lessons for any surfing expert or amateur. Han?s group of expert instructors promise that ?Whether you?re a seasoned surfer or stand up paddler looking for local knowledge about North Shore breaks, or a brand new surfer ready to catch that first wave, Hans? team is there for you.?
The resort also provides guests with a variety of living quarters to choose from, such as luxurious beach cottages, villas, guest rooms and suites. According to the resort?s website, ?Spectacular ocean views are on display from every one of the 443 magnificent accommodations.? Whether it is a family vacation, a business trip, or a romantic vacation, the resort has many options for diverse visitors.
??Wow, just wow. I love the bed, the view, also the coffee maker they provide. The room is just great,? says Stacey, a guest from Oklahoma. ?Have you seen the cottages! Next time I?ll bring the entire family to experience those.? All accommodations have access to room service and housekeeping.
Turtle Bay is also great destination for fine dining and night life. Guests have a choice of eight distinctive restaurants and bars for nourishment. ?They have everything. There?s a place for light drinks and appetizers, there?s a place for gourmet cuisine, there?s a place where you can stuff your plates at a buffet,? says Adam.
From ?innovative contemporary Hawaiian cuisine? offered at Ola Restaurant and 21 Degrees North, to lavish Italian dining of Leonardo?s, guests have many options for great food and drinks. Bars and appetizer lounges such as Surfer, The Bar, Lei Lei?s, and Hang Ten offer light refreshments and alcoholic beverages for a fun night.
Turtle Bay has become a popular tucked away gem of touristic activity in O?ahu. With a variety of living quarters, food spots, and activities, the sky is truly the limit. ?I am basically in heaven!? exclaims Stacey.
Here?s a video showcasing Turtle Bay?s accommodations. In collaboration with a peer, Felisha Straughter, we produced this quick informational segment.
