Women Are the ?Health Police? In Heterosexual Marriages, Says ...

Married men are basically alive because their wives nag them about their health, according to a new study.?Unless you?re gay or lesbian, in which case, both partners tend to be mutually influential on each other?s health habits.

After 100 in-depth interviews with couples involved in 50 long-term relationships (eight years or longer), researchers determined that mutually reinforcing healthy behaviors something observed in gay relationships.

The statistics are telling: of the people interviewed,?80% of the gay couples and 86% of the lesbian couples worked to keep each other healthy, versus 10% of the straight ones.

This isn?t too?surprising, since gay relationships are usually based on equal terms:

?The social and institutional conditions within which gay and lesbian couples live ? including a heteronormative and homophobic culture at large, and a non-institutionalized nonheterosexual union ? structure a unique relational context for cooperative, more egalitarian health work processes to emerge,? write the authors.

But in many heterosexual relationships, the wife is often the one yapping about whole wheat this and brown rice that. The takeaway: Men should step up their game and work on?healthy choices?with their wives.
